The First World War postcard has{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(final) been sent after many years. It is a very old postcard. This postcard was from a 19-year old soldier, Alfred, during the First World War. He{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(write) this postcard and sent it to his lovely sister Nell{#blank#}3{#/blank#}January 1916. The postcard is dated 1916 and{#blank#}4{#/blank#}is a cartoon picture of a new solider on the front.

    Alfred has written to his sister, “Dear Nell, just{#blank#}5{#/blank#}postcard to let you know I have not forgotten you. On the other side you will see our orders for next week. I will need your pity. Write to me, your brother Alfred.” Sadly, Alfred{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(kill) in a flight in 1918 before the card arrived.{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (year) later, his sister died in 1964.

    The postcard is marked 1916 and again September 2010 when it was stamped to arrive. But the postman couldn't find the{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(receive) any more. The post office said it was out of the question that the card was with{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(they) all the time. They regularly cleaned out their offices and post boxes. The{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(postcard) history for the last 94 years is still a mystery.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} is well known, optimism(乐观)plays an important role in one's life. Although we are facing many difficulties, we should keep optimistic. Optimism is a mental(精神的)attitude or world view and it means expecting {#blank#}2{#/blank#} best possible result from any given situation.

    I did {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (poor) in English in the past, but I never gave up struggling(搏斗).     I felt {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(luck) to have won a place to go on a cultural tour to sites of lost civilizations. We visited Pompeii in Italy and Loulan in China. Pompei {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(found) in the 8^th century BC, then taken{#blank#}3{#/blank#}by the Romans in 89 BC. Later, Pompei was destroyed by a volcano. It erupted and covered Pompei with ash.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (fortunate), many people were buried alive. The city was forgotten for many years until the 18^th century when a stone with writing on it was discovered by a farmer. People started to dig in the area {#blank#}5{#/blank#}treasure and caused much damage. Thus, in 1860, the area was governed by the government so {#blank#}6{#/blank#}could be preserved and studied.

    Differently, Loulan disappeared under the sand. There were just a few {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(ruin) left. There was {#blank#}8{#/blank#}ancient water system {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (run) through the middle of the city. The desert was once a green with huge trees, but they were cut down,{#blank#}10{#/blank#}resulted in the city being buried by sand.

    They were both important commercial cities about 2,000 years ago. It was a pity that they disappeared for ever.

    For some time, I had been thinking that I wanted to do something to make strangers smile. I decided that I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (leave) small notes around shops and other public places with positive sayings or kind words for strangers {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (find).

    A friend on Facebook posted that she had received a lot of beautiful paper from an artist friend and was wondering what to do with it. I told her about my idea, and she {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (immediate) said that this must be what her paper was meant for.

    So two friends on opposite {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (side) of the world started leaving these random notes of kindness. I leave my notes without {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (expect) any particular result.     I now carry around a notebook in {#blank#}7{#/blank#} I write down lovely and inspiring phrases that I find. And I buy packs of Post­ its to write notes on whenever I see {#blank#}8{#/blank#} opportunity to make a stranger smile. I only leave the notes when I am feeling in a {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (happily) mood, as I don't want to pass any negative energy on to someone else.

    I sign them all {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (say) that this note is left for you by a stranger to make you smile. Then, I add a heart.

The police came with a vet (兽医) from the city zoo. They put the bear in a lorry and took it to the mountains outside the city. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (lucky), the bear was safe. In Vancouver it is unusual {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (see) a bear, but in some cities you can see big animals on the city streets every day.

    Big animals usually come into cities to find food. In Cape Town in South Africa baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (hunger). Human food is very bad for the baboons {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (tooth) because it has a lot of sugar. Now, there are Baboon Monitors working in Cape Town. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (they) job is to find baboons in the city and return them to the countryside.

    In Berlin in Germany, pigs sometimes come into the city for food. They eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Sometimes they eat vegetables from gardens {#blank#}9{#/blank#} they walk in the street, causing accidents. Some people like the pigs and they give them food and water to drink. Other people do not like the pigs and they want the government and the police to stop them {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (enter) the city.
