One night, Mary saw a girl sitting by the road near her house. The girl's coat was very old and thin. It couldn't keep warm at all. Mary thought a cotton coat may be helpful to the girl. So she opened the window and shouted to the girl, “Come to the front door of my house, please!” The girl was surprised, but she did as Mary said. She knocked at the door of Mary's house. Mary opened the door and smiled warmly to the poor girl. She handed a cotton coat to the girl. Just then she saw a smile on the girl's face. That night, Mary was very happy for what she had done.

The poor girl had never appeared again since that night. Years later, Mary almost forgot the poor girl.

One day, Mary got a call from a lawyer(律师)called Jack. Jack invited her to his office. After they met, Jack gave Mary a letter. It said, “Forty years ago, a beautiful girl helped me. In that winter, she gave me warmth and hope. Later I got through the hardest time in my life and then started a happy life.”

After Mary read the letter, she remembered that homeless girl. “Where is she now?” asked Mary.

“Mrs. Hope died two months ago,” answered Jack. “She left one of her houses to you. Besides, there is one more thing she left to you — a cotton coat.”

All over the world, and for many different reasons, there are millions of people who never eat meat. These people are called vegetarians(素食主义者). To people who eat meat, being a vegetarian may seem like a very strange thing. But they won't eat meat for several different reasons.

First, vegetarians have a big health advantage. One of the major health problems in modern world is too much food, especially in the form of animal fats. Medical study suggests that animal fats, including butter, quicken the development of cholesterol (胆固醇) in the human body. Too much cholesterol seems to be part of the cause of heart disease. Most vegetarians have low level of cholesterol. Too much animal fats also seem to lead to certain kinds of cancer, and vegetarians have less these cancers than people who eat a lot of meat. Overall, studies comparing the health of vegetarians and meat-eaters show that the meat-eaters are twice as likely to die of heart disease as vegetarians are.

Better health is one reason that people choose to become vegetarians. Another reason is religion (宗教). Eating of meat is never allowed in some religions. The largest of these is the Hindu religion, which has about.600 million believers in the world. Although not all Hindus are vegetarian, many are, and there are many believers of other religions, such as Buddhism and even some Christian religions that also do not eat meat. Many vegetarians do not eat meat simply because they do not like the taste of it. They have no religious or other reasons; they just do not like meat. Another important reason that vegetarians give for not eating meat is the health advantages that were given above. Lastly, there are many people who do not eat meat because they just do not like the idea of killing animals for food. They believe that life, all life, is valuable and that we do not have to destroy life to feed ourselves when there are other good sources of food.

What do you do when you begin to read an English newspaper?

You'd better know what sections there are. Usually, there is international news, business, science and technology, entertainment or lifestyle, sports and cartoons. You can choose your favourite section to read carefully.

That you come to the article itself. If you don't have time to read the

whole article, the headline(标题) and photo give you a general idea of the story.

    Different kinds of articles

A news article includes body text and a photo with a short piece of text under it. It usually puts the most important information at the very beginning. If you don't have much time to read the story, just have a look at the first paragraph.

A feature article is an in-depth(深人的) report on an event or a person. It usually has an interesting opening. You get to know the idea of the article as you read.

Another kind of article is an opinion article. Usually, some famous people give their own opinions about an important issue in a fun way. Opinion article is different from news stories that are all facts.

Be a critical(批判性的) reader

There are advertisements in newspapers. They can provide useful information about products, places, food or jobs. Remember that people make advertisements to sell you things. You don't have to do everything advertisements tell you to do. You should be critical enough to judge which advertisements are useful and which are not.

Answer the questions (根据以下内容回答问题)

When visitors came to see Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street, they often did surprising things. Sometimes they put their heads in their hands and cried. Sometimes they talked and talked, and couldn't stop. And sometimes they just sat there and didn't say a word. But nobody was more surprising than Dr Huxtable.

He was a large man, tall, well-dressed. He came into the room, walked to one of the big chairs, and suddenly fell into it. He sat there, with his eyes closed, looking pale and ill.

Holmes looked in the man's pockets-and found a train ticket from Mackleton, in the north of England.

"Mackleton-that's a long way," said Holmes, "it's not twelve o clock yet, so he probably left home before five o'clock this morning. He was probably hungry."

After a minute or two, the man began to move, and his eyes opened. A second later, he stood up. His face was now red and unhappy.

"Mr Holmes, I am so sorry! I forgot to eat or drink anything this morning that's why I felt ill. But I'm better now," said our visitor," and Mr Holmes, come back to Mackleton with me by the next train, please!"

"I'm sorry, that's not possible," said Holmes," I'm working on two important cases. I cannot leave London at the moment."

"Important cases!" our visitor cried, "But this case is very important too. You know about the kidnapping of the son of Duke(公爵) of Holdernesse three days ago."

"What! The Government Minister?" I was shocked.

"Yes, that's him. And he is one of the greatest men in the country." said Dr Huxtable, "Mr Holmes, the Duke is offering five thousand dollars for news of his son, and another one thousand dollars for the name of the kidnapper."

"That," said Holmes, "is a most interesting offer." He looked at me, "Watson, I think we are going with Dr Huxtable back to the north of England this afternoon."
