Recently, the relationship between the two countries got worse because of the Diaoyu Islands.

The Japanese government signed a contract(合同) on Sep 11 with the Kurihara family. It was to pay the so-called “private(私人的) owner” 2.05 billion yen (166 million yuan) to “buy” part of China's Diaoyu Islands.

Anti-Japan(反日) feeling grew strongly among Chinese people. Many people walked into the streets and shouted out “Diaoyu Islands are China's.” Some have decided not to buy Japanese products any more. “I am boycotting(抵制) Japanese goods as a show of support. I'll work hard to make the country much stronger,” Liu Xiushan, 33, a lawyer in Beijing said to China Daily.

However, some didn't show their anger in the right way. They broke cars and stores of Japanese brands. Some used rude words. These actions are bad for our position and image. Some actions were against law.

Li Jingjun, a 17-year-old high school student in Guangzhou, was shocked by what he learned from TV and the Internet. He joined protects(抗议) in his city on September 15. But he acted differently. He called for rational (理智的) actions.

“We have every right to say the Diaoyu Islands belong to us, but we should watch our behaviour. Bad manners can harm our dignity(尊严) and sense of justice(正义感)” ,said Li Jingjun.

举一反三
Have you been back to the place where your ancestors lived, worked, studied and played? Robert Qian , a Chinese Canadian, already has.Now in China, he has found that his family is like a tall tree with long roots.
Robert is just one young overseas Chinese who has come to visit his ancestors' homeland, as part of the In Search of Roots summer camp program. The program is organized by the local government of Guangdong Province. This program started in 1980, and so far has brought thousands of overseas Chinese students to China to look for their families' roots. The young people are usually between 16 and 25 years old. (1) Most, like Robert, can hardly speak any Chinese and have never been to  China before.
The students mainly visit parts of Guangdong Province in southern China. During the two-week camp, they study Chinese culture, see changes that have happened in that area, and visit interesting sights. (2) Going to their ancestors' village is often the most exciting part of the trip. The students feel that they are part of the village, and experience village life. They drink from the village well, go for walks through the countryside, and watch the villagers do their daily activities.
Cathy Qian, a young American student, had this to say, “ Thanks to In Search of Roots, I am beginning to understand my Chinese roots and who I am. It has been a great trip, and I have so many memories of China to take with me .”
The program leaders believe strongly in the program and say that the purpose of it is to give young overseas Chinese the chance to learn more about themselves. “I've really enjoyed the trip so far,” says Robert.“This has been a big step for me, and I'm looking forward to finding out more about my roots during my time here. ”

Service on the 102-km high-speed railway between Shenzhen and Guangzhou started on December 26, 2011. A non-stop trip between the Guangzhou South Station and the Shenzhen North Station takes 35 minutes at full speed.

The train runs at the highest speed of 300 km per hour. All 36 pairs of trains run every day. A one-way first-class ticket costs 100 yuan. A second-class one costs 75 yuan, 5 yuan cheaper than a second-class ticket on the slower line.

A high-speed train has 556 seats, including 16 seats in the VIP rooms and 50 in the first-class carriage (车厢). It offers more advanced facilities (先进的设施). For example, the seats are more comfortable, there are toilets for the disabled (残疾人), and there are power outlets (电源插座) in the first-class carriage.

The high-speed service between Guangzhou and Shenzhen will be a convenient choice for many people. “I won't need to travel to the Guangzhou East Station to take a train to Shenzhen,” said Wang Yi, who lives in Panyu district in Guangzhou.

Many people still prefer the slower trains, because the terminals (终点站) of the high-speed trains are far away from the centres of both cities. “I would not like to take a high-speed train to Shenzhen. I live in the centre of Guangzhou. First I have to get to the Guangzhou South Station. It is a waste of time for me,” said Zhang Lu.
