In September 2022, the paper folding artist Pei Haozheng set the Guinness World Record for his work, Deer with 100 Flowers (《花生满鹿》) made from a single (单一的) piece of paper.

Born in 1996 in Nanjing, Pei started folding paper {#blank#}1{#/blank#} he was just a child. At first, he {#blank#}2{#/blank#} paper folding from his friends and parents. And in 2001, Pei started teaching {#blank#}3{#/blank#} through books about paper folding. He showed {#blank#}4{#/blank#} interest in "the magic world made by paper", because in his eyes a piece of paper held great possibilities. Every day, Pei spent {#blank#}5{#/blank#} folding paper.

His efforts paid off. In 2017, he {#blank#}6{#/blank#} won his fame at an international competition. Pei folded an ancient Chinese woman holding a mirror, which surprised judges (裁判) with its special shape and eastern {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. "The {#blank#}8{#/blank#} of paper folding lies in its creativity from a single square paper through just folding with no cuts or glue," said Pei.

People are amazed at the flowers in his work Deer with 100 Flowers, which shows a deer with 100 roses on its antlers (角). But for Pei, the most difficult part was creating it in a way that could show Chinese {#blank#}9{#/blank#}. "The design comes from the poem To the Oak by Chinese poet Shu Ting and the Chinese saying which means a {#blank#}10{#/blank#} road to a bright future. I made it {#blank#}11{#/blank#} my deep love for my country and help spread Chinese culture to the world," said Pei.

 Three years ago, I started working at the University of Leeds and I was looking for things to do. I noticed that a community school was {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(提供) Chinese evening classes. I paid fora beginner class {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(没有) much thought. 

I had no plans to move to China. I just wanted to learn a new l{#blank#}3{#/blank#} , which is also a good chance for me to know more about Chinese culture and Chinese {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(传统习俗). I used to speak fluent English and Spanish. But I think there should be a huge difference between learning something new as a child and learning as an adult. 

I had Chinese lessons {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(严肃). There was only one lesson a week and each lasted 90 m{#blank#}6{#/blank#} . Mr. Kong, the teacher, was energetic. For each class, he would teach us what seemed   like hundreds of new words. After {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(数个) months, I got used to this. Through weekly classes, my mind would reorder and make sense of the chaos. 

 There are more than 6, 000 international students. It was not difficult to find Chinese students who want to {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(练习) English in exchange for Chinese. My new Chinese friends helped me go over everything I had learned in class. 

 Now I'd like to describe Chinese grammar as an easier one than that of English or Spanish. I am ready to overcome any difficulty and become fluent in Chinese. 

Lisa had always been overweight. She wanted to 1 weight (体重), not just because she wanted to look 2 and healthier, but also because it would make life easier. For example, it was 3 for Lisa to find ready-made clothes that would fit. She had to ask a tailor (裁缝) to make clothes that were 4 enough.

In school she needed a special chair which was bigger and stronger than 5 chairs. If she went for a walk, she got tired very 6 . She also 7 the way people treated her sometimes. "People look at me and even make fun of me. That's unfair! It's true that I'm overweight, but I don't think people 8 treat me differently because I'm big. I can't enjoy having dinner with my friends because I'm afraid of getting 9 ." Her friends and family never made fun of her. Instead they tried to 10 her. They want her to be happy and healthy. Sometimes 11 Lisa was feeling sad, she didn't want to speak to anyone.

But now things are quite different. Last month her classmates were preparing for the School Art Week. Someone advised Lisa to 12 the main role of the proud Queen who was tall and fat. Lisa agreed and practiced a lot. Soon after the play, Lisa became the star, she did 13 well that all the teachers and students remembered the proud Queen. 14 stood around her and said "congratulations" to her. She even 15 the School Best Actress for her wonderful performance.

Now Lisa doesn't worry about being fat any more, she believes in the English saying "Every dog has its day."

There is an animal in the last drawing, too. Its head is an apple. Its hair is black. It has a long mouth, and it is a banana. Its two legs are carrots. What is it? Lisa says it is a horse, but it doesn't look like a horse at all.

Bayika Kalidibek is 72 years old and he lives in Xinjiang. In 1972, he took over his father's position and worked as a border patrolman (护边员).

Being a border patrolman is hard. The border area has high mountains and difficult roads. Bayika got hurt (受伤) many times during patrols. He faced many problems, but he never gave up. He said, "Protecting the border is a job for all of us, not just the country's."

In 2004, his son Laqini started to work as a border patrolman. Unluckily, he gave up his life when he saved (拯救) a boy from a cold river in 

2021. He was only 41 at that time. "I'm really sad, but I'm proud (自豪的) of him," Bayika said. "Our family has protected the border for more than 70 years. We will pass down our family's tradition from one generation (一代人) to the next."

Bayika's story is touching. We should learn from the old man. 

Pan Zhanle is a name all the Chinese know now. This summer he made history at Paris 2024 Olympic Games and brought one of the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (最令人激动的) moments for people all over the world. Also, it was the best gift for his {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (第二十个) birthday.

Pan was born in Wenzhou. A large {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (人口) in this city are swimmers. Pan's grandfather is one of them. Pan liked swimming at an early age and often had swimming matches with {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (同学) in summer holiday. Nobody at that time believed that the small boy will be named "Chinese Flying Fish" one day. In 2018, he went to Zhejiang Provincial swimming team and {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (练习) swimming hard every day. However, he had a big problem at that time—He was not tall enough as a swimmer. "Maybe it is better for you to stop swimming." someone {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (建议). Once again, his grandfather helped him. His coaches helped him a lot in {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (训练). Later, in 2023, he got a gold medal in Asian Games. From then on, Pan learned that swimming as much as {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (可能的) might not be difficult. To understand it will be a long {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (旅程) to become a real swimmer and never give up is the most important thing. Now the 20-year-old man is still working for his dream. "I am {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (相当) pleased to make the world record. But it is certainly not the end."
