While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world's first kids to be "taught" by a digital teacher, just like in the science fiction. Before you start imagining a human-like robot pacing around the classroom, Will is just an avatar(化身) that appears on the students' desktop, or the smartphone screen, when ordered to come.

The autonomous animation platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show human-like behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach Vector's "Be sustainable with energy"—a free program for Auckland's elementary schools.

Just like the humans it replaces, Will is able to instantly react to the students' responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and a microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal cues randomly. For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way interaction not only helps attract the students' attention, but also allows the program's developers to monitor their engagement, and make changes if needed.

Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, "I have a lot of hopes for this technology as a means to deliver cost-effective, rich and educational experience in the future."

The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, "What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention. However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon."

Shawn and Pat were brothers. Twelve-year-old Shawn liked to play jokes. He did not always do his homework on time. Sometimes he forgot to wash the dishes. His bedroom was a mess! Pat, on the other hand, had always behaved like an angel. "What a wonderful baby!" his mother would say. "He never cried!" His teachers always said, "What a joy it is to have Pat in class! He is so different from his brother."

Pat did not think much about how great he was until one day when he was watching Mostly Martin. In the show, a new boy had moved to town. "He is strange," said Martin. "He never gets into trouble. He does everything he's supposed to do. Everyone thinks he is perfect. He must be a robot!"

He went to find Shawn. "Am I a robot?" he asked. "Of course not." said Shawn as he went outside. Pat thought hard. Robots were machines. They looked like people, but they were not really alive. They always followed orders. How would you know that you were one?

Pat decided to ask his parents. After all, they must know. He asked at dinner. His father laughed. "Sure!" he said, "And it's time to change your batteries (电池)!" He jumped up and ran to the tool drawer. "Dad's just kidding!" said Pat's mother. "Of course you are not a robot, Pat. You are our son." Pat felt better for a while. But that night he began to worry again. Of course his mother said he was real. Nice mothers would not tell their sons they are robots!

Pat ran to Shawn's room. Shawn was playing a computer game in the dark. "How can I know for sure that I am not a robot?" asked Pat. For once, Shawn did not play a joke on his little brother. He could tell that Pat was really worried. After all, Pat was only six.

"What makes you think that you are one?" he said.

"People always say I am perfect," answered Pat. "But only robots are!" Shawn smiled to himself. He knew exactly what to do. "Listen!     ▲    " he said to Pat.

The next morning, his mother opened Pat's bedroom door. "Time to get up!"

 "No," said Pat. His mother was surprised. This had never happened before. "Get up."

 "No!" shouted Pat. He kicked his feet and rolled around in bed.

"Patrick!" his mother said in a loud voice. "Get out of bed this minute!" Pat gave a few more kicks. He felt very silly. He was also happy. No robot would ever act this way. He was a real boy. Now he knew for sure.

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic bags. More and more businesses are changing to paper products. Using paper is thought to be better than plastic. However, it is harmful to the environment, too.

Firstly, paper bags are made from trees. Trees, as you know, are good for the environment. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation(毁林).

Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water are used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short- lived.

Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.

So, paper products are actually a lose- lose result for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.

In my opinion, the most environment- friendly way is to avoid single- use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!

Seven years ago，Joyce Akinpe moved to Australia to start a new life，finding an exciting job in Sydney. After the outbreak（爆发）of COVID﹣19，she suddenly lost her job. 

Seeing that there were many others like herself in trouble from the outbreak，Akinpe and her two roommates，Michelle Gomez and Maureen Lee，brainstormed ideas for how to help their local community. They came up with a street pantry（储藏柜）. Gomez said the idea was very simple，"Take what you need and leave what you can. "

With the help of Gomez's father，they built the Blessing Box — a street pantry，with shelves and hanging baskets and two doors made from old furniture. 

It sits just at the back of the three girls' home，so they can look after it. They put some information notices into their neighbors' mailboxes，and the Blessing Box was quickly filled with the donations（捐赠）from the community. "It is the community's strong support that keeps the project alive. " Akinpe said. 

"We now have hundreds of people visiting our box every day. It might only take two hours for the box to be full and next hour it might become empty again. We are now helping others to carry out similar projects in their own communities，too，" Gomez said. 

Lee said things in the box were mostly convenience foods，as well as some necessary life things such as spaghetti and toilet paper. "Few people take everything at once. They think there are other people who need them more. " Lee added. 

There were many people rushing there for donations. The three girls needed to sanitize（消 毒）all the donations and make sure all food packages were not broken. Gomez said that they had no time for rest，but what they did was well worth. 

It is Saturday, but I go to school as usual. I go to play football. I am in our school team and we are going to play against another school next week.

The practice starts at 10 a. m. We all arrive as early as we can so that we have time to warm up. We are training harder than usual because the other team beat us last year. This year we want to do better. It is more difficult to practise in winter because the days are short and the weather is cold, too. It gets dark earlier, so it is important not to be late for after-school practice.

Our coach is pleased because we are playing better as a team now. Last year we were sometimes careless when we passed the ball and we lost to the other team in the final match. What a pity! This year we are training more carefully. That means we have a better chance of winning.

The fan club has fewer people this year. We hope to play well so that we have more fans to watch the matches. It is good to have our fans around. They cheer us on loudly and we feel more confident (自信的) to win the game.
