Boys and girls, this summer vacation is the time for you to take your mind off homework and prepare for the future. The following is some advice on how   {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(make) your vacation meaningful and colourful.

Take regular exercise. You  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(work) most of the time already. So you need to join in outdoor 

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (activity), which can bring your whole body into action. You can keep  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(health) by doing different kinds of exercise, such as playing basketball, jogging and mountain climbing.

Learn some basic life skills. One day, you will live by  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(you). You can't depend on your family any longer.  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}you should learn to cook, wash and other practical skills.

Go for a journey. Travel to places of interest. In this way, you'll understand cultures that are different 

{#blank#}7{#/blank#}those of your home town. Beautiful sights can also make you  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(total) relaxed.

Enjoy family time. Don't always sit in front of  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}computer. It's great fun for family members to sit around the table, discussing sports, clothes or other common topics.

Can you live with no phones or TV? With no cars or supermarkets? Do you want to live in a tree house?

 In A Life in the Trees, Rebecca Moore goes 15,000 kilometers from London to Papua New Guinea. In Papua New Guinea, Rebecca meets the Kombai people. She writes about their lives in the jungle(丛林).

 Moore lives with the Kombai women and children for three months. The Kombai people have no watches and no cars. There is no school for children. Parents teach their children to cook, hunt(狩猎) and swim.

 The Kombai get up every morning at sunrise. Kombai men hunt in the jungle. They can hunt for 12 hours. They also cut down sago palms. The women cook the inside of the trees. The Kombai people eat this food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 The biggest thing of Kombai life is building(建造) their tree houses. The men, women and children all help build tree houses. Each house is 20 meters high. The stories in this book show the Kombai people's lives in the trees.

A good king needs honest ministers (大臣) to help him manage the country. However, one king believed that his most important minister was a bit too honest!

The Valuer's job was to say what the price of everything in the country should be. He did his best to set fair prices, so that buyers and sellers would be happy. 

This did not please the king! "A good Valuer should set the prices that I want-then I can buy things cheaply and sell them expensively. " he said. "What's the point of having a Valuer if he doesn't set the prices I want?"

Soon, the king invited a foolish man to be the Valuer and fired (解雇) the honest Valuer. People brought all kinds of goods-rocks and fruit, fans and potatoes, fish and elephants. The foolish man had no idea how much anything was worth, so he just said whatever price came into his head. People were angry about many of the prices he set, but what could they do? He was the king's Valuer, after all!

One day, a horse trader came, leading five hundred fine horses. He bowed to the king and the Valuer, and said, "How much are my horses worth?" The king wanted the horses, so he told the Valuer to set a very low price. The Valuer thought for a moment and said, "Your horses are worth. . . a cup of rice!" The horse trader was speechless! But he had no choice but to accept the Valuer's price. 

However, the next day, the horse trader went back, carrying the cup of rice he had been given. "Yesterday, you said that my five hundred horses were worth a cup of rice, " the horse trader said to the Valuer. "____"

The foolish Valuer was surprised by this question. He said, "Your cup of rice is worth, er. . . this big city, and everything in it!" There was silence. . and then everybody started shouting at once. 

"That is silly!" shouted the king. "This city is worth far more than a cup of rice!"

 Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic bags. More and more businesses are changing to paper products. Using paper is thought to be better than plastic.

However, it is harmful to the environment, too.

 Firstly, paper bags are made from trees. Trees, as you know, are good for the environment. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation(毁林).

 Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.

 Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.

 So, paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.

 In my opinion, the most environment-friendly way is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!

 Once upon a time, there was an old man who usually went to the seaside to do his writing. He had a habit of walking {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the beach before he began his writing.

 One day, he saw a figure (身影) moving like {#blank#}2{#/blank#} dancer while walking along the seaside. He smiled to {#blank#}3{#/blank#} ( he) and thought maybe he could see a dance here. And so, he walked faster.

 As he got {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ( close), he noticed that it was a young woman. She wasn't dancing at all. Instead, she went down to pick up something in her hand, then he {#blank#}5{#/blank#} ( throw) it into the sea.

 So the old man called out, "Good morning! May I ask {#blank#}6{#/blank#} you are doing?"

 The young woman paused, looked up, and answered, "I am throwing starfish into the sea."

" {#blank#}7{#/blank#} really surprised me a lot. Why are you throwing starfish into the sea?" asked the old man.

 To this, the young woman {#blank#}8{#/blank#} ( reply), "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they' ll die."

 Hearing this, the old man said, "But there are {#blank#}9{#/blank#} ( mile) of beach and there are starfish all along every mile. You can't possibly make a difference!"

 At this, the woman picked up another {#blank#}10{#/blank#} ( one) and put it into the sea. As it met the water, she said, "It made a difference to that one."

I am sitting in an empty football field after my last high school football game that finished a few hours ago. I'm the midfield player(中场球员) in my team. But in fact that's not 1 now.  I was the midfield player because, as I said, this was my 2 game. That's a good way to end  a high school football career(生涯), especially if you win, but even though you don't, it's good to 3 at a high point.

I was eight when I first started playing football. My dad 4 football, and he used to practice with me at home-passing, catching, running. We used to 5 almost every evening until it got too dark. He tried to teach me 6 he knew about the game. "Just remember: Don't ever 7 .""Stay in the game. Don't lose your concentration(专注).""Go out there and give 110 percent every time." Well, that was a long time ago, but I still hear his words 8 in my ears.

I just lived in this game, this moment. I didn't 12 the crowd;I didn't feel the cold or the pain;I never felt tired. I just kept my eyes on the ball, and it was just me and the ball and, inside, a soft, white light 13 me the way to the goal. It was a beautiful, empty 14 .
