Many Chinese words include directions or positions. What is the Chinese history and culture hidden behind these words?

When we go shopping, we say "mai dongxi" instead of "mai nanbei" in Chinese. Going back to the ancient city of Chang'an, the national capital in Tang dynasty, there were two large markets, one was in the east and the other was in the west, which were called "eastern market" and "western market". People went shopping either in the eastern market or the western one. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as "mai dongxi".

We use "shang cesuo" in Chinese to express "go to the bathroom" and "xia chufang" to mean "go to the kitchen". Why? In ancient times, houses were built in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the north eastern part of the house and the kitchen in the south eastern part. On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about "the north" as "shang" and "the south" as "xia". So people would say they were going "up" to the bathroom and "down" to the kitchen.

Ancient Chinese not only used "shang" and "xia" to refer to directions, but also social status. "Shang" was seen to be honorable, while "xia" stood for humility (谦卑). For example, people used "huangshang" to refer to the emperor and "dianxia" to refer to the son or daughter of the emperor, who had a lower status than the emperor.

This summer, when I walked into my grandparents' house with my little brother Frank, Everything still looked the same. Grandpa's blue 1 was on his chair. My cousin Jack was playing in the yard as if nothing had happened. 

" Let's go to catch fish!" Jack pulled out the fish net from the corner, Grandpa's net. 

 Last summer, I was holding the 2 when Grandpa asked me whether I could help him teach Frank to play chess. I said no because I wanted to catch fish. Grandpa had been the one who'd taught us how to catch fish, but then the 3 made him stay behind. 

 Now I wouldn't have a chance to play chess with him any more. Nobody knew how 4 I was for saying no to Grandpa. 

 When we reached the stream, we began to catch fish. Suddenly, Jack shouted, " Look! Frank is in the water. He is shaking!" We hadn't brought anything to keep 5 , so I had to send him home. Grandma was 6 to see a wet Frank. She hurried to take him into the room and 7 put Grandpa's blue blanket around him. 

 As I went to the stream again to meet Jack, I looked back at Frank with that old blanket. Something seemed to 8 me at that moment. Everything was just like before, but Grandpa was gone. 

I walked to Frank. " Did Grandpa teach you to play chess last summer?"I asked. " No, Grandpa   was too sick then. " he said, "I 9 him. "

" Me, too. " When I said it, I knew Grandpa was never gone. What 10 us was still there. It could be the fish net. It could be the chess. It could be the blue blanket. 

For his eleventh birthday, Tom was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course（课程） that interested him. There was just one requirement (要求): Tom would have to promise（承诺） to study it for at least one year. 

Tom had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Tom's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Tom's parents would let him decide. 

Tom's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed (列出) all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Tom's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking. 

The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches（演讲）. Tom, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse. Then he saw "cooking", which sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient(方便的). It could be done alone and it was also creative. 

Based on（基于） Tom's hobby history, his dad had doubts (怀疑), but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, he practiced at home and made delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Tom got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others. 

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again. Now Tom is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers（顾客） say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago. 

It's seven o'clock. Jenny gets up at seven and puts on her clothes, then she has a delicious breakfast. After breakfast she makes her room tidy. Her mother usually does it for her, but she is doing that now. 

After morning lessons, Jenny has lunch at school. She eats with her best friends and they talk about all kinds of things. Stars are always their favourite topic (话题). 

In the afternoon it's time to play different sports, such as football, basketball, table tennis and so on. Jenny likes sports and she likes playing basketball best. She goes home at 4: 00 p. m. Her parents come back from work at 6:30 p. m. It takes them about half an hour to get home. Jenny does her homework first and then she listens to music or watches TV. 

Dinner time is about 7:30 p. m. Jenny helps her mother make dinner. After dinner, Jenny's father cleans the room. Jenny and her mother help him. Every evening, Jenny tells her parents interesting things at school. She tells them some interesting stories, too. She likes talking with her family. Her family always have a nice evening like that.
