Volunteer Work Done by Class 10 in Winter Holiday

Welcome to Classic Reading. I'm your host, Jordon. While living in China for the past seven years, I'vebecome interested in Chinese culture, especially classical Chinese poetry. I have also known some Chinesepoets, such as Li Bai, Du Fu and so on. Today, I will talk about a poem from the Tang Dynasty by the poet HeZhizhang. Here is an English version（版本）of the poem by Xu Yuanchong, a world-famous translator ofancient Chinese poems in both English and French. Let's take a look at his translation. 

Oh, I return to the homeland I left while young, 

Thinner has grown my hair, though I speak the same tongue. 

My children, whom I meet, do not know who am I. 

"Where are you from, dear sir?" they ask with beaming eyes. 

In this short poem, He Zhizhang tells a story about a visit to his birthplace. It's been decades（数十年）since the last time he was home, but he could still pick up his local accent. Things did not change much, butthe people did. The poet had mixed feelings about it, so he wrote this poem. 

Personally, I like this poem because it reminds me of my own hometown. No matter where I live or forhow long I've been away, my hometown and family will always have a special place in my heart. I hope youcan enjoy this poem as much as I do. See you next time! 

Do you like watching old movies? Maybe you will see one with Carole Lombard. She was a famous actress in the 1930s. She died when she was only 34 years old. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

Lombard's real name was Jane Alice Peters. In 1921, she was playing baseball in the street near the home. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} She was only 13 at the time. The movie was one of the last movies without sound. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} At 16, she left school to act.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} The studio gave her a new name, and she acted in several films. Then at the age of 18, she was in a bad car accident. The accident left scars on her face. The studio broke the agreement, but she did not give up. She continued to act.

It was Paramount Studio that make Lombard a star. She made many movies for the studio. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Lombard was married to actor William Powell for only 23 months. But seven years later, she married the great love of her life, actor Clark Gable. It was a great Hollywood love story.

Cola is bad for our health. Cola is sweet, because it has sugar in it. Too much sugar can let you get fat. Drinking one bottle of cola each day can make you get fifteen pounds（磅） each year. And because the sugar in cola can make you feel full, you can't eat much healthy      food, such as fruit, vegetables and rice. And cola is bad for your teeth and bones（骨头）. Drink water, please. Water is very important to our body. It keeps us healthy. We get water from drink and food, especially（特别是） from fruit and vegetables. But it's better to drink water. If you don't like plain（清淡的） water, you can put a little 100% fruit juice into it. 

 Paper cutting has been popular in China for over 1,500 years. Let's learn something about it.

 Wonderful meanings

 Paper cutting has some wonderful meanings. In our mind, paper cutting can always bring us happiness and good luck. At the Spring Festival, people put up"Fu" on the doors and windows. At a wedding(婚礼) , people also put up"Xi".

 The largest paper cutting in the world

 The largest paper cutting was made by Gao Xiaodong. It has an area of about 456 square meters. It is as large as a basketball court(球场).

 Why are most paper cutting red ?

 In old times, people respected the sun. Red is the color of the sun. We always regard red as the symbol of hope and good luck. Now we can still see red everywhere in China. The walls of old palaces are red. Lanterns are red. Weddings are always full of red things, too.

 Black paper cuttings in Shanzhou

 It's true that most of paper cuttings are red. But Paper cuttings in Shangzhou, Henan Province are black. Black is the best color there. Shanzhou is a dry place. The local people make the black paper cuttings to wish for rain.

Tina was a sixteen-year-old girl. She suffered from a disease and had to use a walker (步行器）most of the time. But she always 1 a bright smile. Maybe it was because of her 2 action, most students always kept away from her. Tina always tried to break the ice with people she met with a big "Hi". 

In one class, I gave the students a task to recite (背诵) a 3 . It would be a very small part of their total grade4 I knew most of them wouldn't do it on time. The next day, one after another, each student failed to recite the poem correctly as I 5 .

Then I heard a student asked, "Tina, why did you do that? It's not an important job!"

"Because I want to be like you guys! To be 11 . " Tina said.

"I know. " Tina said as a big smile spread across her face. The rest of the students laughed, too. 

Tina couldn't recite the poem completely that day either, but she 14 the love and respect of her classmates. To her, that was worth a lot more than a 15 .
