Annie slept in the front of the seat with her father drove through the darkness. ”We're almost there!” Dad announced cheerfully. “Soonwell be observing and counting owls at the state park.” Yawning, Annie nodded and smiled. The time was 4:30 a.m. Looking out into the darkness, Annie remembered learning in school that most owls are active at night, when they hunt for food. During the day they sleep in hard-to-find spots.

  “Dad, why do you need to count owls?” she asked. “It's important for the scientists to have current information about bird populations,” he explained. “We want to know which birds have decreased in number and whether any new kinds of birds are coming into a certain area. You and I will write down the kinds of birds that we see today and keep a record of how many times we see each kind. The we'll send out a report to a scientific organization that is collecting about birds from people all over the county.”

    Dad pulled into the parking lot of the state park. Then, with flashing in hand, they began their hike into the woods. Annie zipped up her coat and tried to keep from trembling. She had not expected the morning to be so frigid. Luckily her gloves were in her pocket.

    Suddenly Annie's father stooped and gestured for her to bestill. Obeying, Annie did not take another step. She thought she heard a low crying up head. “That's certainly a screech owl,” her father whispered. “Let's get a look at it.” After looking more closely, Annie could see that it was asmall owl. Sensing danger, the owl narrowed its eyes and pulled its feathers tightly against its body. Annie carefully wrote down in her notebook that they had seen a screech owl.

    Walking a little farther, they came to a tall oak tree. “This looks like a perfect spot to attract owls,” Dad said. “I'm going to play a recording of common call of the barred owl. Maybe we can get one to answer." Annie could hardly believe her ear. The recorded all sounded as if the birds were asking, “who cooks for you?” Moments later Annie thought she heard areturn call in distance. She held her breath and waited. Suddenly a huge birdlanded very quietly on a branch above them.

    Annie had long forgotten how cold it was. She stood in wonder, shining her flashlight on the bird and studying it carefully. The barred owl was nearly tow feet tall. Gray feathers surrounded its dark eyes. The bird did not matter. Annie would never forge the image of the powerful barred owl.

    Mother Teresa was born on August 26^th,1910 in Skopje, Macedonia. She always wrote her birthday as 27^th of August because it was the day of her baptism(洗礼), which was always more important to her than her birthday. For her work with the poor around the world, she received the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

    In 1928, she accepted a religious order and took the name Teresa. The order immediately sent her to India. A few years later, she began teaching in Calcutta. In 1948 the Catholic(天主教的) Church agreed her request and let her enter the convent(女修道院) and she began to work for the poor people. She became an Indian citizen in the following year. In 1950, she set up a religious organization in Calcutta. The organization provided food for the poor people and then she set up hospitals, schools, youth centers, and homes for the sick and the dying poor. It now has branches in 50 Indian cities and 30 other countries.

    Besides the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa has received other awards for her work with the poor people. On September 5^th,1997, Mother Teresa passed away, but she will continue to inspire people all over the world through her lasting present of love and faith.

    Dearborn Heights,Michigan—2.7 million children under 18 have a parent in prison,and women put in local prisons are the fastest growing population.Shawna Reynolds has seen some of those women up close while working in the corrections system(劳教所) for 17 years,and she was encouraged to try something different.

    After seven years of education and collecting as much money as she could,Shawna created About Face Course Correction-a one-year rehabilitation program(康复项目) that offers a more personal way to help non-violent women prisoners.The program includes classes for women to finish their education, find a job and So on.“You can't expect people who have been in prison to stay in prison,”Shawna says.“YOU want them to be helpful people but if you are not going to help them, it's not going to happen.”

    The women live free for a year in a house in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.Women like 20-year-old Jennifer Douglas, who dropped out of school,took drugs (吸毒)，and has spent years in and out of prison. She says,“I was doing things I would never have thought I would do in my whole life.Because of About Face, Jennifer's life is changing. “Everyone is starting to trust me again and proud of me and what I'm doing,” she says. “ It's helped me a lot.It has kept me on the right track.”

    There are many other women like Jennifer.     A 9-year-old boy in Indian stopped a would-be carjacker（劫车贼）on Christmas Day from running away with his father's truck.

    Kevin Cooksey was inside the One Stop Express gas station in Kokomo buying medicine for his wife when a man jumped into the driver's seat of his truck. Cooksey had left the engine running and the door unlocked.

    "When I saw my truck door open, I was astonished, 'Oh my God, what am I going to tell my wife?'" Cooksey said.

    His son, Larry, was sitting in the back seat. "As soon as he opened the door, I got frightened," said Larry. "So I pulled out the gun and pointed it to his head."

    This was enough to make the carjacker think twice and he jumped out of the truck to try another car. Parked beside Cooksey's truck was Kyle Sparling's black Trailblazer. He too had left the engine running as he went into the store. The man got in Sparling's SUV and took off.

    "I didn't know what to think, I just kind of ran outside and watched him," said Sparling.

    As the man sped off, Cooksey told Sparling to get into his truck and the two men began to run after him. The icy winter conditions made the driving difficult, but the pair followed at a safe distance as the carjacker drove in a "Z" way. After a few miles, the carjacker knocked into the sign of a local business, American Tool and Party Rental. Cooksey and Sparling called the police to the place.

    The police put 32-year-old Ollie Dunn into prison. Sparling's car was damaged in the wheel, and the windscreen got cracked after the sign fell on it. "I was just glad he didn't knock into anybody," Sparling said. "That was my biggest fear, I think."

    It's pleased to receive gifts from your loved ones. I have received many Christmas gifts over the years. But the best gift I ever received was presented to me by a stranger. I never even knew his name and I only had contact with him for less than 60 seconds. His Christmas present to me changed the way I had thought about people and Christmas.

    It was several years ago when my wife asked me to meet her at the local department store on Black Friday morning. They had advertised a child's bike that she wanted to purchase for our son. We stood with a very large crowd, waiting for the manager to blow the whistle. After a while, the whistle blew. It was like throwing a bucket of fish into a tank of sharks. I told my wife that if we obtained a bike, fine, but if we did not, I was OK with that too.

    As the shelf of bikes began to gradually decrease in size, I saw my polite opportunity to wrap my hands around the corner of one of the boxes. I lifted it off the box and suddenly felt some mild resistance. I looked up to see one of the largest gentlemen I had ever seen in my life. Threat was not the word to describe his presence. He was decorated with numerous belts of metal pointed leather around both arms and even his neck. Tattoos (文身) were an obvious passion of his.

    I started to return anxiously the box but he gently pushed it back in my direction and back into my hands. He then directed it into my shopping cart. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “Merry Christmas.” My wife and I went to the checkout, paid for the bike and went home. All the way home I was thinking that this moment was by far the best Christmas gift I had ever received. The kindness of a stranger that broke all previous views I may have had of stereotypes and prejudices. I will never forget the tenderness of a human heart in a simple act.

    Exactly five years ago, on New Year's Eve, I was invited to a children's ball by a man high up in the business world, who had his connections, his circle of acquaintances, and his close friends. So it seemed as though the children's ball was merely an excuse for the parents to come together and discuss matters of interest to themselves, quite innocently and casually.

    I was an outsider, and as I had no special matters to express, I was able to spend the evening independently of the others. There was another gentleman present who had just stumbled upon (偶然遇到)this affair of domestic happiness，just like me. He was the first to attract my attention. His appearance was not that of a man of noble birth. He was tall, rather thin, very serious, and well dressed. Obviously he had no heart for the family celebration. The moment he went off into a corner by himself, the smile disappeared from his face, and his thick dark brows knitted into a frown. He knew no one except the host and showed every sign of being bored to death, though bravely keeping the role of thorough enjoyment to the end. Later I learned that he was a provincial, had come to the capital on some important business, had brought a letter of recommendation to our host, and our host had taken him under his protection, not at all with love. It was merely out of politeness that he had invited him to the children's ball.

    They did not play cards with him .They did not offer cigars. Thus , my gentleman , not knowing what to do with his hands , spent the evening stroking his whiskers(胡须). His whiskers were really fine, but he stroked them so eagerly that one got the feeling that the whiskers had come into the world first and afterwards the man, in order to stroke them.
