When I was in the middle school, I seldom raised my hands to answer questions in class. And I found lots of my classmates were just like me. When the teacher asked a question, I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.

One day, in a foreign language class, Mr. Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class, so he asked us some questions, but no one answered. "At the beginning of the class, let me tell you a story. " He said.

"When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard folded （折叠） in half, wrote their names in bold （粗体） with the most eye-catching color, and then placed the cardboard on the seat. America's great national holiday, Independence Day, falls on the fourth of July. It celebrates the birth of the United States. It was on this day that the colonists(殖民者)announced their independence from England. They had to fight hard for the next seven years to win this independence.

The first Monday of September is Labor Day(劳工节). This holiday honors(向……表示敬意)the working people of the United States. There are sorts of celebrations and speeches on this day, too. People go to all kinds of places to enjoy the fine weather at the end of summer.

Hello, I'm Nina. I come from America. I am in Shanghai now. I am a new student in Class Five, Grade Seven in a junior high school. I am very different from the students here. But my teachers and classmates are nice to me. 

This is my classroom. Can you see my desk? A schoolbag is in it. It is purple. Five textbooks and a pencil-box are in it. The pencil-box is purple, too. It is my favorite color. A green jacket is in my desk, too. It is not mine. It is my friend, Andy's. Where is my gray jacket? I can't find it. Oh, it is under Bob's desk. Bob is next to me. He is my friend, too

I like my life in China. 

 One day, Mario drives(开车) from his house to his mother's house with his dog, Zoe. Because it is his mother's birthday. But his car can't work in the desert(沙漠).

"Who can help me?" Mario says. "No one can help me..."

 Zoe looks at Mario and runs away(离开). Mario is not happy about that.

 The sun is very hot and it's 40℃ every day. Mario doesn't have water or food.

"It's the last day. I will die(死). I can't meet my mother..."
