Embroidery (刺绣) is an important art form in Chinese culture. The most famous embroidery styles are Su embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan and Yue embroidery from Guangdong.

Shu embroidery is the oldest of the four. It dates back to the Han Dynasty(206 BC-220 AD). People sold it to other countries through the South Silk Road.

Embroidery takes time and patience. Since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today, fewer people buy handmade Shu embroidery products. They are also very few young embroiderers. So the skill is in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China's intangible cultural heritage list (非物质文化遗产目录) in 2006.

Meng Dezhi has been making Shu embroidery for forty years. The 59-year-old is a national-level inheritor (传承人) of the art form. She used to work at the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory. But in 2006, the factory went broke and Meng lost her job.

Wanting to save the art, Meng wanted to have her own place and teach Shu embroidery to others. It's hard work. Workers need to divide each silk thread (线) into more than ten or even thirty pieces. Each piece is thinner than a single human hair. In 2016, Baidu invited Meng to make a homepage logo for Qixi Festival. It was a small logo, but it required the use of 45 types of sewing techniques (针法) and 35,000 stitches (针).

Meng is trying to save Shu embroidery by teaching in different universities and communities. She believes that Shu embroidery stands for thousands of years of Sichuan culture and should be saved.

"I feel that I have the responsibility to pass on Shu embroidery skills to young people, to let it run from generation to generation," she said.

All the players in the game come from different jobs and places. Some are students, and others are workers. During the football game, people waved flags (摇旗), beat the drums and shouted loudly to cheer for the players. Winners got special prizes (奖品) like beef, pork, goose and so on. 

The game was special because it showed how cool Rongjiang was. Many people watched the game in the field (现场) or online. The football game helped Rongjiang become more and more popular. 

Have you ever played with another dog around your dog or played with a different dog when you're taking a walk? Many dogs don't like it when they're not the center of their owners' attention. Whether it's a new baby or the cute little dog next door, there's a good point that your dog doesn't want to share your love with anyone else. Some people may think that jealousy is a human-only feeling. But it's not true.

A few years ago, researchers at the University of California, San Diego, found that dogs showed jealous actions when their owners showed love toward another dog.

For the study, researchers watched videos of interactions (互动) between 36 dogs and their owners in their homes. Researchers had the owners pay no attention to their dogs but play with a robotic dog, which was treated as a real dog. Owners talked to it sweetly and shared everything with it.

About 60% of the dogs were likely to touch or push their owners when they were interacting with the robotic dog. About one-third of the dogs tried to get between the owner and the robotic dog and some even barked at "the other dog".

"Our study suggests that dogs not only show jealous actions but also try to break up the relationship between the owner and a seeming competitor," said Professor Christine Harris, one of the researchers.

Therefore, your dog might act differently when he's trying to get your attention and maybe experiencing feelings of jealousy. For example, he may draw your attention by licking (舔) you, or he may suddenly run into the bathroom to get attention or even to show displeasure. So if you have more than one pet, be sure to give them the same attention so that any of them will, not feel forgotten.

 If you plan to visit the town of Ivrea in northern Italy in February, you might want to bring some extra soap and shampoo(洗发剂). Every year, thousands of people come to this small town to witness one of the strangest and messiest battle s in the world. It is known as the Battle of the Oranges. 

 The Battle of the Oranges is a three-day long festival. People travel from all over the world to watch it. No one seems to agree on exactly how this food fight got started. No matter how it began, the tradition is being carried on today in very sticky ways. 

 To prepare for the battle, 57, 000 crates(集装箱) of rotten oranges are ordered from Sicily. These oranges were meant to be thrown away. Now they have a new purpose. People divide up into teams. Each team wears their own type of wild and colorful uniform. Those walking around with red hats on are there just to watch, so no one throws fruit at them. 

 During the battle, one team rides in a horse-drawn carriage(马车). It is filled with oranges. The other team is on the ground. When the orderl is given, the teams begin throwing the stinky(有臭味的), sticky fruit at each other. When the throwing is done, judges decide who had the best aim, who wore the most unusual uniforms, and who managed to avoid running into the horses. 

 Once the battle is over, the city celebrates with a big parade(游行). Then, visitors go home and the real work begins. More than 100 people come into the city. They are there to clean up the incredible mess left behind. Soon, all traces of the battle are over-until February returns again next year. 

The rubber (橡胶) raincoat was invented by Macintosh in 1823.

In 1492, Columbus discovered the New World the Americas. He brought a lot of things from South America. Rubber was one of them, but people didn't know the use of rubber at that time. In 1770, people found that the rubber could be used as erasers.

Macintosh was a worker in an eraser factory in England. One day he spilled (洒出) the rubber liquid (液体) over his clothes carelessly when making erasers. He was too busy to clean it and went back home wearing the dirty clothes. On the way home, it rained heavily. Having no umbrella, Macintosh had to run home quickly. When he got home, he took off the wet clothes. To his surprise, the area of the clothes with rubber wasn't wet. "Why not make a rubber raincoat?" Macintosh thought. The next day he brushed the rubber liquid all over a coat. He wore the "rubber coat" on rainy days and took a walk outdoors, to test if it could really keep off the rain. Surprisingly, the clothes inside the "rubber coat" weren't wet at all. The rubber raincoat was created in this way by chance.
