The chrysanthemum(菊花)is a very popular flower in China. The beautiful flower bas many m{#blank#}1{#/blank#} in Chinese culture. 

The chrysanthemum is k{#blank#}2{#/blank#} as one of the "Four Gentlemen in Plants". The other three are the plum blossom, the orchid, and bamboo. In the past, they stood for noble (高尚的)qualities. 

The chrysanthemum comes out in bright colors during cold a{#blank#}3{#/blank#} days when most flowers die. They are beautiful, strong and tough. The flower thus greatly inspired (启 发)ancient Chinese poets. They spoke highly of its beauty and also used the chrysanthemum to represent(代表)their o{#blank#}4{#/blank#}in their works. 

Tao Yuanming was a f{#blank#}5{#/blank#} poet. He once wrote a poem about living as a hermit(隐士) . He described how he loved the chrysanthemum and used it to show his s{#blank#}6{#/blank#} in the poem. 

"I pluck chrysanthemums under the eastern hedge, and gaze afar toward the southern mountains(采菊东篱下, 悠然见南山), "Tao wrote in his poem. Since then, the chrysanthemum has become the s{#blank#}7{#/blank#} of the hermit. But the chrysanthemum is not only found in Chinese poems. It is also p{#blank#}8{#/blank#} of Chinese food. 

The Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar year. On that day, drinking wine made from chrysanthemums is a popular tradition. Chrysanthemum tea is also usually seen on Chinese dinner tables. It tastes great. People believe it is good for one's health, e{#blank#}9{#/blank#} for eyes. 

In a word, the chrysanthemum has i{#blank#}10{#/blank#}people's life deeply and widely. 

The world has got 24 time zones(区域). That's one for every hour of the day. When you get up in the morning, it's time for people on the other side of the world to go to bed. 

Dale has a new baseball hat. It is from his sister Helen. The hat is blue and it is beautiful. Dale loves it. He wears(戴) it every day. When he doesn't wear it, he always puts it on his desk. This morning Dale wants to go and play baseball with his friends. He wants to wear the hat, but the hat is not on the desk. Where is it? Dale looks for it under the sofa, under the chair, in his schoolbag, just everywhere. But he can't find it.

" Do you see my hat?" Dale asks his family. No one sees it.

Dale is not happy. He thinks his hat is lost. At that time, his dog Puppy comes. And the hat is on his head! He loves the hat, too.

Dale is very happy. He gets the hat and leaves(离开) home.

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?

The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey of student's ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people. This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems.

But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who have high scores as well, displayed just average collaborative(合作的) skills. " One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades," said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. " Students have a lot of exam pressure and they see schools as places for competition." " However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today's society." he added." Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill."

Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls can be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes towards relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others' opinions.

PISA also found that the classroom environment can influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication such as class debates, students might have better attitudes towards collaborating.

American people like to say" Thank you" when others help them or say something kind to them. 

People of many other countries do so, too. It is a very good habit. 

You  should  say " thank you" when  someone  passes  you  the  salt  on  the table, when someone walking before  you  keeps  the  door open for you. When someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. 

" Thank you" is used not only between parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives. 

" Excuse me" is another short sentence they often use. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk past you. 

It is impolite to interrupt others while they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say" Excuse me" first, and then begin talking. You should also do so when you want to cough or make any unpleasant noise before others. 

 Let's all learn to say" Thank you" and" Excuse me" .
