As you start a new term, you might feel a bit worried or nervous. These feelings aren't fun to have. But would your favourite superhero have these same feelings?

Scientists have been studying what they call the "Batman Effect (效 应)" in children. They've found that if kids pretend (假装) to be a strong person — such as a superhero like Batman — they won't feel so nervous and will be able to focus(集中) on their work.

For example, if you feel nervous during an exam, try to imagine that you are Batman. You may find that you can remove the stress from this situation and feel more confident. This can help you fight off bad feelings and focus on your task, just like a superhero would. Pretending to be powerful makes us feel powerful, and that goes on to how we act in real life.

But you don't have to believe in superheroes for this to work. Anyone you admire (仰慕) can encourage you to get through hard times, or remind you of how you should act in certain situations. Movie stars, famous painters, even our own parents — anyone can be our "Batman".

As for me, I would like to choose Mr Rogers, He was a TV host who was always kind, helpful and patient when dealing with other people. I try to act the same way towards other people just like Mr Rogers.

See history through sci-fi

Are science-fiction(sci-fi,科幻) stories only about the future and new technologies? The Space-time Painter(《时空画师》) is different. The novel(小说) won the Hugo Award (雨果奖), the world's top sci-fi award, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} October 21.

Hai Ya, 33, the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (win) of the award, is a part-time writer. He works in a bank and writes stories after work. He is the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (three) Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.

The Space-time Painter tells a story about a ghost of {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ancient painter. He {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(have) the ability to go into different spaces. This helps him paint {#blank#}6{#/blank#} makes his life hard.

"The Space-Time Painter is a sci-fi story about history," said Hai Ya. History is about the past and sci-fi is about the future. They may seem opposing(相反的), but fantasy(幻想) can be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (they)bridge.

The novel got many {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (idea) from Qianli Jiangshan Tu. Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty(960—1279) {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (paint) it at the age of 18. But so little is known about this talented painter. In the novel, Hai Ya uses his imagination to explore the mysterious(神秘的) Wang's story.

"Also, it brings Chinese {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (tradition)culture and sci-fi together really well," said Tian Xinghai, the editor(编辑) of the novel. "The pride of a nation is also the pride of the world."

As an old saying in Xunpu, Fujian province goes, "put flowers in your hair in this life and you'll also be pretty in the afterlife". In the p{#blank#}1{#/blank#}, all the women in the small fishing village had long hair, and then they put colorful and special floral headdresses on their hair. The headdress is k{#blank#}2{#/blank#} as zanhua or zanhuawei. Zanhua was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

As a child, Huang Rongbing would watch his mother, Weng Xiuzhen, comb her long and thick hair. After forming a bun at the back of her head, she would put colorful flowers into her hair, the 34-year-old recalled.

The headdress inspired Huang's career choice. In 2016, he and his elder sister opened a salon. There, tourists can get their hair styled in the Xunpu tradition and have their photos t{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. "We have been fully booked and now there are over 200 businesses offering services to d{#blank#}4{#/blank#} tourists with a zanhua," said Huang.

The I{#blank#}5{#/blank#} in tourist visits has made Huang happy. That's because it not only keeps the business busy b{#blank#}6{#/blank#} helps spread the history and culture behind zanhua headwear.

After going t{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the full zanhua experience, Hu Titi, one of Huang's customers, even brought zanhua culture to Paris in France last year. Under the Eiffel Tower, she shot photos and videos of h{#blank#}8{#/blank#} in traditional Chinese clothes with a zanhua in her hair.

Huang said the women of Xunpu are h{#blank#}9{#/blank#}, warm-hearted and brave. They are famous for catching the best seafood. "W{#blank#}10{#/blank#} they put a zanhua on their heads, they express their wish for happiness. The flowers are seen as a symbol of hope," she added.

Martin got an important lesson from his teacher Mr. Lee. He will never forget it. 

One day, Martin and Mr. Lee went out for a walk. They reached a farm where Martin saw a pair of old shoes. They seemed to belong to (属于) a poor farmer who would return after a whole day of hard work. Martin thought of an idea, "Why don't we hide these shoes and wait? It will be fun to watch his reaction (反应) when he can't find his shoes. " Mr. Lee thought about it for a while and asked Martin to put some coins in his shoes. 

The farmer finished his work. As he put his foot in the shoes, he felt something hard. He was amazed to find coins. He took them out and saw if (是否) someone was looking for them. He didn't see anyone, so he kept them in his pocket. He got moved and tears came out of his eyes. 

The farmer looked at the sky, "Many thanks to that unknown person. You help me at the time of need. 

Because of your kindness and help, now I can buy medicine (药) for my wife and bread for my hungry children. "

Martin's eyes were full of tears. Mr. Lee said, "Now tell me what makes you happier. "

 Martin said, "I understand the joy of giving is much more than taking. "

Eric Whitacre is one of the most famous musicians in the world. His wonderful and special skills on music works quickly draw people's attention all over the world. He is excited about using choral(合唱)music to make people get together from all around the world.
