Do you want to learn the material you're studying—like, reallylearn it? One learning theory suggests that if you overlearn, you'll gain the ability to do something without having to think about it — and eventually obtain more knowledge. Here's what overlearning is and how to do it.

What is overlearning?

Simply put, overlearning means studying something even once you're sure you know it. Don't stop reviewing or studying just because you succeeded in memorizing something. 

The purpose of overlearning is to make the task easy to ensure it is completed to a high standard with no stress. For example, a student wants to pass their spelling test which has 10 words. Knowing about overlearning, she doesn't just memorize each word, but also learns about the origins of each word.  Similarly, a teacher wanting to learn about teaching strategies might not simply read one book — they may read ten books, watch videos, attend lectures (and maybe even write their own book).

How do you overlearn?

 For instance, when using the Leitner method, always review all the flashcards you're assigned on a particular day, even if you feel like passing over them because you got them right last time. Repeatedly going over material you know well is the key to overlearning and eventual automatic recall.

Schedule blocks of time in your week for reviewing materials you've already mastered.  Continually reintroducing familiar ideas to yourself will dig them deeper into your long term memory.

    It is said that if you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise — and as a result, we are growing old unnecessarily soon.

    Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of aging could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual on economical faculties. Contraction of front and side parts — as cells die off — was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to the contraction normally connected with age — using the head.

    The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the town. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking (萎缩) brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant.

    Matsuzawa's findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. “The best way to maintain, good blood circulation is through using the brain.” he says. “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don't rely on pocket calculators.”

What is stress?

    Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, frustrated, scared, or afraid—which can give you a stomachache or a headache.

What causes stress?

    Plenty of things can cause stress in a child's life.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Good or normal stress might show up when you're called on in class or when you have to give a report. Have you ever gotten butterflies in your stomach or sweaty hands? Those can be signs of good stress.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} For example, you may do a better job on your book report if the anxiety inspires you to prepare well before you get up and read it to the class.

    But bad stress can happen if the stressful feelings keep going over time. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick,if you're having problems at school, or if you're going through anything else that makes you upset every day.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Once you recognize that you're feeling stressed, there are several things you can do. You can try talking about what's bothering you with an adult you trust, like a parent or teacher.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} An adult may have ideas about how to solve whatever is worrying you or making you uncomfortable.

    My grandmother often said to me, “You can count the number of your true friends on the fingers of one hand.” For a long time I thought this was true. However, I've now discovered my grandmother was only half right. Maybe we do only make a few best friends in our lifetime, but those aren't the only people that we can call friends. There are many different types. Let me tell you about a few of them.

    One type of friends is the type I call the “football mom friend”. My neighbor Sally is a good example. We both have kids who play football in a football club, and someone has to take them to practice and pick them up. Sally and I and two other mothers take turns to do this. We meet sometimes and have tea and talk about what our kids are doing, but those are the only times that we meet each other. I enjoy being with these women, but we don't do anything else together.

    Another type is called the “hobby friend”. That's the person you share an interest or a hobby with. Michael and Cater, who are brothers, are a good example of this type. We're all in a bird watching club. Every few weekends the members of the club go on a trip to watch different kinds of birds. There's nothing romantic about my relationship with Michael and Cater, of course. We just share interest in birds.

    Then there's the “other half of the couple” type of friends. Jim is married to Rose, a friend that I've known since college. When Rose married Jim, I realized that I would have to be Jim's friend if I want to continue to be Rose's. Jim and I don't share so many interests, but we do have a friendly relationship.

    Developed by the Xiamen-based Meitu Inc MeituPic is the company's flagship beauty camera app and was the first to become a big hit among Western users. The app has drawn some 456 million users, who use it to post more than 6 billion photos every month.

    In addition to MeituPic, Meitu Inc has developed a series of beauty camera apps such as Beauty Plus, Poster Labs and Meipai, each specializing in facial feature improvement, video editing and many other features.

    ⒉Pitu

    Tian Tian Pi Tu, is a beauty app developed by China's Internet giant Tencent. Similar to other photo-editing apps, Pitu offers a number of beautifying filters, blemish(瑕疵) removing tools and virtual makeup choices for users to choose from.

    Launched in 2014, Pitu has accumulated 106 million monthly active users (MAUs). While the number is not as impressive as that of Meitu's apps, some argue that the user base of Tencent's gaming products and chat applications, such as QQ and WeChat, gives Pitu great potential for further growth. According to Chinese app watchers, Pitu's target audience is younger and more individualized than that of MeituPic. 80 percent of Pitu's users are younger than 25, giving the app more room to try out more new features.

    ⒊FaceU

    In contrast with most other beauty apps, FaceU, focuses more on the social feature, encouraging users to video chat with friends and even strangers while playing with its fun stickers (贴纸) — and the strategy is undoubtedly working. Launched in 2016, the app, which mainly targets female users between 15 and 35, has twice made it onto the Apple store's Chart for top apps.
