All around the world, people drink tea. But tea doesn't mean the same thing to everyone. In different countries, people have different ideas about drinking tea.

People in China like to drink tea with nothing in it, and they often have it with their friends or by themselves. They have two kinds of tea—green tea and black tea. They may drink tea at any time of the day anywhere. But they don't often drink tea just before they go to bed, for tea makes them awake. In England, people like to drink tea with milk and sugar in it, and they often have it in the afternoon with their friends.

In Japan, people also like drinking tea very much. It is very popular there. They drink tea every day. They have it in a way different from that in China. Some young Japanese girls are good at making tea. They can do it beautifully.

In the USA, people drink tea at breakfast or after meals. They usually use tea bags to make their tea. Making tea with tea bags is faster and easier than making it with tea leaves in teapots.

Are you interested in writing about food? If so, then this is the competition for you. 

The Week Junior is hosting the Young Food Writer competition. Set up in 2008, it is the only national food writing competition that is for children and young people up to the age of18.

To be winning, write a short story around the theme （主题） of "Food and Heroes （英雄）". The hero could be anyone you want, yourself, a friend, a family member or a sports person. No matter who it is, write about what role food plays in life. For example, do you have a family member who cooks something to make you feel better when you're sick or help you get through your hardest times?

The competition has four different age categories （类别）, each with their own word limit（限制）. 

10 and under — at least 250 words

11—13— at least 500 words

14—16— at least 750 words

17—18— at least 1,000 words

There will be a champion（冠军） and a runner- up（亚军） in each category. Good luck!

Find a good topic. Talk about the weather, sports or news. You can also ask questions or tell jokes. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Be a good listener. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} It means you are interested in what they talk about.

Be honest. Tell people the truth. No one likes the people who are not honest.

 The Chinese abacus is known as the suanpan. It is {#blank#}1{#/blank#} important part of traditional Chinese culture and sometimes it is known as China's {#blank#}2{#/blank#}( five) great invention. People can use the abacus {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (calculate) at a faster speed, so it has been called"the {#blank#}4{#/blank#}( old) computer in the world".

 To use the abacus correctly, something {#blank#}5{#/blank#} ( be) necessary for you to know. It usually has more than seven rods(杆子). There are two beads(算珠) on each rod in the upper deck(层) and five beads each in the bottom. The beads are usually round and made {#blank#}6{#/blank#} wood. We count the beads by {#blank#}7{#/blank#}( move) them up or down towards the beam (横梁). If you move them towards the beam, you count their value. {#blank#}8{#/blank#}, if you move them away the beam, you can't count their value. The_abacus can be reset(重置) to the starting position quickly, so you can start to count again {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(easy). Today, the use of abacus is still taught in some primary  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} ( school) as part of maths.

The Sahara Desert in Northern Africa is the largest hot desert in the world. It is about 1，800km from the north to the south and about 4，800 km from the east to the west. Temperatures can reach 58℃ in the daytime and can fall to ﹣6℃ at night. More than 8，000 years ago，the Sahara was a rich land where farmers grew food and plants grew well. As the rainfall in the area gradually went down every year，it became a huge desert. Most areas of this desert have less than 13 cm of rain every year. 

Gary Smith and a few of his brave friends decided to hike across the Sahara. Supporters in cars，who carried food and water for the group，stayed with them together. 

One day，Smith walked alone and then he couldn't find the rest of the group. Even worse，he could not find out which direction to go. Then a sandstorm covered the area. When the storm was over，Smith was even more worried. In the heat that he couldn't stand，he quickly finished his water. He had to spend that night out in the open，and he almost felt he couldn't survive （生存）. 

The next day，he walked on. After the second night，he started to worry about dying. He realized that his friends might not find him in time. It was late on the third day that Smith lost his sense and fell over. 

When Smith awoke，he was in the car with his friends. He had been found by a group of Bedouin who were traveling in a truck. In such a large desert with the weather conditions， this made it possible for him to survive. Then Bedouin returned to his group of friends. Smith was so lucky.
