Every country has its own way of cooking.

Parents see the importance of teaching their children how to cook, and most Americans say that home-cooked meals are the best.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. For example, baking（烘焙) is the most popular way of cooking in America. Most American families have ovens and {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. In planning a big meal, they try to cook meat, a few vegetables, some bread and often some sweet food.

Yu, 32,is a maker of automata（机关人偶）in Chengdu,Sichuan.Thanks to him,wood not only comes alive, it also tells wonderful stories.

Interested in handcrafts as a boy, Yu first learned about automata by Kazuaki at a show in 2015 when he studied at the Communication University of China in Beijing. As an art and design student, he began to learn the craft by himself, and with the help of his tutor Lu Ying, he kept studying and examining automata in school.

When he finished school in 2016, Yu got a job at an advertising（广告） company in Beijing. He stayed at the company for three years because, at that time, he was not sure that he could make a living out of his hobby. Finally, in 2019, Yu quit（辞职） his job and returned to Chengdu to open his automata workshop. His hobby has become a career（事业）.

"A fascinating thing about automata is that they interest people of all ages. Adults see them as art, while children see them as toys to be played with,"Yu said, smiling.

Yu knows that there are many more creative ideas waiting to be shown."It feels quite good to pay attention to automata and I am still searching for myself."

Katie was waiting for Gulliver's calls. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. "Maybe Gulliver missed the harbour." Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats made pretty pictures, but not the one she wanted most.

Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle's neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull's name, Gulliver, was given by him. The gull's size and his single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie what Gulliver did that first summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone's attention. Young Katie lay in her stroller（婴儿车）on the floating dock（码头） when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie's stroller shake strongly. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and uncle rushed to Katie and stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye at Katie after that. Another summer Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn't watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" The gull's cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things.

This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she'd learned to do. One day, she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather? She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around knees, she closed eyes to hold in the tears. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" Katie sat up. "Katie! Katie!" Soon, Dad and Uncle Ralph appeared. "How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks," Uncle Ralph said, "At least …it sounded like him. Strange, he was nowhere in sight." Katie remembered the feather. "I thought I heard him, too."

What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don't know how to deal with them. Many old computers are put away. Many more are simply thrown away as rubbish.

Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers of their own brands.

In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers which are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).

Yet many people are throwing away good computers, while others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working on this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers. These repaired computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体) or people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person's rubbish into someone else's useful things and cut down waste, too.

The reality show(真人秀) is a kind of television program. A reality show {#blank#}1{#/blank#} ( usual) has many series. And it can be shown on TV for many years.

The reality show is quite different {#blank#}2{#/blank#} other kinds of TV shows. Because it shows the life of c {#blank#}3{#/blank#} people, and there are no actors or actresses play in it. It often shows true stories that happen in people's daily life. So many people enjoy w {#blank#}4{#/blank#} reality shows.

The first reality show a {#blank#}5{#/blank#} in the 1990s in America. At that time, the most f {#blank#}6{#/blank#} and popular reality show was Survivor. It was popular around the world.

Reality shows also show different kinds of c {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. For example, there is a very {#blank#}8{#/blank#}( success) Chinese reality show called The Voice of China. In this show, there are four Chinese sing- ers. Their job is to find their favorite students and help them be the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} ( win). Lots of people like to watch it.

H {#blank#}10{#/blank#}, some people don't like to watch reality shows. They think the stories in the shows are made up.

Clubs Making a Difference for the Earth

Joining a club to help protect the environment can be both fun and impactful. Here's an interview with two students, Alex and Mia, who have started clubs at their schools to help the planet.

What is the goal of your club?

Alex:My Club, the "Clean Air Group", focuses on reducing air pollution. We encourage students to ride bikes and use public transport to cut down air pollution.

Mia: {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Our goal is to create community gardens in different parts of our school and neighbourhood to provide fresh vegetables, which are good for both people and wildlife.

How did you come up with the idea for your club?

Alex：{#blank#}2{#/blank#} And I realized how much pollution they were producing. I wanted to do something to help reduce it, and that's when I thought of cleaner ways of getting to school.

Mia: I've always enjoyed gardening with my family, and when I learned about how important plants are for the environment, I thought, "Why not start a club that lets others experience that too?"

Alex: We organize "No Car Days"where students leave their cars at home and walk,bike, or take the bus. We also invite guest speakers to talk about air pollution and its impact on our planet.

Mia:We plant and take good care of school gardens. We give away some of the produces from our gardens to local food banks.

What impact has your club had so far?

Alex: A lot of students now use bikes or carpool more often. It's great to see people being more mindful of how they travel. 

Mia: Our gardens are growing all the time. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} It's brought people together and made the school a greener, more welcoming place.
