Chen Kai and Zhang Juntao are good friends. They study in No. 5 Middle School. They are in the same class. Chen Kai's home isn't far from school. So he walks there. It just takes him about 10 minutes. He is often the first student to get to school. Zhang Juntao's home is 10 kilometers from school. He takes the subway to school. And he is never late for school.

Chen Kai likes math. But he doesn't like English. He thinks it's difficult to remember English words. But Zhang Juntao's English is good. So he often helps Chen Kai learn English. The two boys like music. Chen Kai is good at playing the guitar and Zhang Juntao can sing very well. They are in the school music club. On weekends, Zhang Juntao sometimes goes to Chen Kai's home. Chen Kai plays the guitar and Zhang Juntao sings songs. They always have a good time.

The two boys also like animals. They often go to the zoo. Zhang Juntao likes giraffes because they are beautiful and friendly. Chen Kai's favorite animals are pandas. He thinks they are cute.

Cinyee Chiu, an artist from Taiwan, is always happy to try something new. Her amazing works won lots of prizes. Among them, "24 Solar Terms (节气)" is the most popular.

Ancient Chinese divided a year into 24 parts according to the changes of the weather. It's the 24 solar terms. But not everyone knows them well. Cinyee Chiu put the 24 solar terms in pictures to help people understand them better.

Cinyee turned each solar term into an animal. But these animals are not just animals. You can also find seasonal fruits, vegetables or beautiful flowers on them.

When spring comes, water gets warm and fish start to swim around. So Cinyee chose fish as a symbol of Start of Spring. Also, she drew spring vegetables, Chinese chives (韭菜) on the back of the fish.

White Dew (露珠) falls on about Sept. 8. It shows the beginning of the cool autumn. There are colorful leaves and cooler nights at this time of year. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass and trees at night. For White Dew, Cinyee chose a raccoon (浣熊)—a small animal with thick hair. She drew white spots (小圆点) on the raccoon to show dew. And she used the dragon fruit to show the rich colors in autumn.

The young artist really gave the ancient Chinese culture a new look.

Secret of the best stone

Do you love skipping stones (打水漂) across the water? Then, you should know the best skipping stone is flat, but no heavier than a tennis ball, is also good. 

That's because…

When a heavier stone hits the water, a bigger part of it goes under the water so it gets a stronger push from the water.

1. Find the right stone. 

2. Flat, calm water is best, like a lake or pool. 

3. Turn the stone around quickly when you throw it. Don't throw hard. Instead, try to throw the stone quickly.

 Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: music boosts certain language abilities in the brain. Here, we look at two examples.

Music and Hearing

A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument(乐器) can   improve a person's hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.

 Musicians hear better, says Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra(管弦乐队). When the violinists play in a group, they hear their own instruments and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore(忽视) the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to pay attention to certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

 Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical. School, works with stroke patients(中风患者). Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why dóes this work? Music seems to activate(使运作) different parts of the brain, including the damaged(被损坏的) parts. This somehow helps patients to use that part of the brain again.

Understanding the Results

 Music improves concentration(专注), memory, listening skills, speaking skills and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏锐的) as we get older. Music, she adds, is not only enjoyable, it is also good for us in many other ways.

It was Tamika's turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.

"This summer I went to a big market in Bradley," Tamika said. "I bought skates(溜冰鞋)."

"That's not a trip," Jeremy said loudly to Kevin. "My mom and I go to Bradley all the time. It's only a half-hour from here." Tamika felt embarrassed(尴尬的) and then hurried back to her desk. 

Tamika listened as Peter talked about his trip to Jamaica. She heard about Mary's trip across the Atlantics to Ireland… It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. Tamika didn't feel proud of her family's trip to Bradley any more. 

After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika's skates came loose(松动的). Now she couldn't even skate to the park!

Mrs. Henderson walked up, "You look unhappy, Tamika. Want to come inside to talk about it?" Tamika came in. And then, RAP- RAP! Someone knocked at the door. "Oh, I forgot Jeremy," said Mrs. Henderson. "He's here to fix(修理) my doors." Tamika thought about school that day. She was about to jump behind the sofa so that Jeremy wouldn't see her, but it was too late.

"Hi, Tamika," said Jeremy. But Tamika said nothing. "I'm sorry about class today. I didn't go anywhere either this summer. My dad opened his own car shop, and I stayed here to help him." 

Then he noticed the new skates and there was something wrong with one of the wheels. So he picked a tool(工具) to fix the skate. Soon, he showed it to Tamika. "You fixed it!" Tamika said happily.

"I help my dad fix things." Jeremy said proudly.

"     ▲     ." Tamika said.

"What happened in class?" asked Mrs. Henderson. Jeremy said that Tamika and he were the only ones who didn't go anywhere far away. 

"I've traveled a lot in my free time," Mrs. Henderson said. "It's exciting to see the new places, but you don't have to travel far to have the excitement of doing something new." 

"Yeah," said Jeremy. "It was also fun learning how to fix things with my dad." 

"I wish I could fix things," said Tamika. 

"I could teach you." said Jeremy. 

"That's great!" said Tamika.
