Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.

I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner's dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, "Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes." So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the "real" firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.

Now I know what you're thinking, but I'm no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.

A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

Here, I would offer this reminder: don't wait. Don't wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody's life. If you have something to give, give it now.

Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody's life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

I have many(许多) teachers now and I like them all, but my favorite teacher is my English teacher, Mary. Mary is from the UK. But she likes China very much. She thinks China is great. She loves Chinese food. Do you know what she likes for breakfast? Bread and milk? No, she doesn't. She only has noodles(面条). Hot pot(火锅) is her favorite and she always eats it on Saturday and Sunday.

Mary has a daughter and a son. Her daughter's name is Ella. Her son's name is Mike. They are8 years old. They go to the same school. They like hot pot, too. They are all in Chongqing now.

We have English from Monday to Friday. So Mary is very busy. But she is always nice and happy. All my classmates like her and her classes very much. She always plays English games and sings English songs(歌曲) with us. We can play games in class, too. It's great fun!

Now I think I can do well in(擅长) English because I have the best(最好的) English teacher.

Do you know which social app is popular with Chinese young people now? "Short videos" are certainly the most popular. A large number of young people use Tik Tok (抖音) and Kuaishou. They think it is fun to share their lives by short videos, while others have other purposes as well.

A t2-year-old user named Elsa has about 2. 7 million fans on Tik Tok. The girl has shared her dancing studies on Tik Tok since last July. One of the videos won her about one million tans. "I feel really glad to share happiness with people by short videos." said Elsa.

To some other young people, they use short videos to have a quick look at the hot programs. "Because I don't like to spend many hours watching a whole program, I hate waiting for a program to end, and I prefer to watch short videos of wonderful parts of hot programs," said Wang Zhihao.

However, some young people feel bored with short videos. "Killing time is the main reason for me to watch short videos, and many short videos are almost the same, so I think they are not so useful or interesting. What's more, I really don't like the videos about strange and dangerous things," said Wen Nan, another college student.

Recently, something else has appeared. Some videos are telling people what commodities are worth buying. Some short videos even sell bad commodities, and it is hard for customers to get their money back. So we should think twice before we want to buy the commodities by short videos. 

If a person wants to be a gentleman, he should pay attention to what he does and says. Then what are the rules for a gentleman on words and actions? {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. 

Confucius said:" If a gentleman, not caring for food or housing, is diligent（勤勉）with what he does, careful with what he says and rectifies（纠正）himself with a worthy, he can be regarded as a good learner. "

In the West, people pay too much attention to being eloquent（能言善辩的）. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. However, Confucius didn't think so. He believed that gentlemen are supposed to choose their words carefully, even if that may make people feel bored. 

Confucius had such beliefs because he thought that words are important and that they should follow after etiquette（规矩）. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. He said that gentlemen should not be lazy and need to focus on their work to improve themselves. 

These rules for gentlemen's words and actions have influenced Chinese people for a long time. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. 

Of course, as culture has developed over time, we are also supposed to view（看待）his words critically（批判性地）{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. 

Most parents don't know what their teenage children are talking about when they are having a chat with their friends. This is also true when teenagers are using the language of texting to send messages. Words like 18r are easy to understand, but what about"POS"? I asked some parents what it means and only 28% got it right! It means that a parent is near and that they are watching what their child is doing.

Parents worry a lot and like to know what is happening in their children's lives at all times. This means they try to control as much of their children's lives as possible. However, they have no control over the language that their children use, so it is a useful way for children to keep parts of their life secret.

Parents also complain that they never have serious conversations with their teenage children. Teenagers are always busy phoning or texting their friends- even when parents are trying to talk to them. And there are times when teenagers aren't busy, but they just don't feel like having a serious chat with mum or dad!

One way to start real conversations is to make sure that the whole family eats together at mealtimes and that everyone has a chance to talk. Teenagers are trying to find out who they are. They aren't adults yet, but they are learning how to act like big people.

This means that it is a good idea to speak to teenagers like they are adults and it helps to listen to their ideas and opinions carefully. When parents talk to their teenagers, some good ad vice is" Don't sound like your own parents!". In addition, parents who try to use the language of teenagers often sound very silly. And that's because most times when an adult tries to use" teen talk", the words are probably already unfashionable!

Different countries have different customs and cultures. Every culture around the world has different customs and ways of communicating. When you learn a language, you learn more than words.

In China, people are used to saying"sorry" to show that they regret doing something wrong. But it's very proud for American people to have polite manners towards one another in public. They often use the word"sorry"— even when they don't really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they will start by saying"Sorry to trouble you." If they' re five minutes late for the appointment, they will greet the person by saying"Sorry, I'm late!" It's quite different in China. They use the word"sorry" in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has changed a little over time. The two main dictionary definitions(定义) of"sorry" are:1) feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck;2) feeling regret because you' ve done something wrong.

So what does"sorry" really mean? And why do western people use it so much? Well, in western culture, saying"sorry" is a way to be polite. It's also a very clever way to get what they want. If you want to borrow something from others, you'd better say"sorry" to them about something. Or it's hard for you to get what you want. So maybe saying"sorry" is not only just being polite, but also a good method to get what you want!
