Of all the Chinese 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright (清明) is the only one whose first day is also a traditional Chinese festival, the Qingming Festival. The words "clear" and "bright" describe the weather during this period. Temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, making it an important time for growing crops in the spring. As is known, it is a time to worship ancestors (祭拜祖先). However, here are some things you may not know about Clear and Bright. 

Spring Outings

Not only is it a period to honor the dead, but it is also time for people to go out and enjoy nature. As trees turn green, flowers come out, and the sun shines brightly, everything returns to life. It is a fine time to enjoy the beauty of nature. 

Flying Kites

Flying kites is an activity loved by many Chinese during Tomb-Sweeping Day. Kites are not only flown during the day time but also in the evening. Little lanterns are tied to the kites. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns look like twinkling stars at night. What makes flying kites during this day special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly freely. It is said that this brings good luck and that diseases can be driven away by doing this. 

Cuju

Cuju is an interesting game played during this period. Ju is a ball made of leather with hairs in it. It is said that the Yellow Emperor first invented it for training warriors. Later, Cuju was used by people to build up their bodies when they were unable to eat hot food during the Cold Food Festival. 

Qingtuan

In the lower parts of the Yangtze River region, qingtuan is very popular on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Qingtuan is a kind of round green cake. In order to make the cakes, people mash (捣碎) barnyard grass (艾草) to squeeze juice from it and mix the flour and juice to a paste. Then they put fillings into the paste and steam them. Pretty and delicate, qingtuan tastes special. 

Paper cutting is a symbol of Chinese culture. It can date back to the 2nd century CE, when paper {#blank#}1{#/blank#} invented by Cai Lun. As paper became more affordable, paper cutting became one of the most important types of Chinese folk {#blank#}2{#/blank#} . Later, this art form spread to other parts of the world. 

 In the past, every girl was supposed to master it. Most of them were good at{#blank#}3{#/blank#}it, and brides were often judged by their skills. 

 You can learn how to make paper cutting {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. And required tools are simply a piece of paper and a knife or a pair of{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. But it's not easy to master this art because it requires you to be {#blank#}6{#/blank#} , and you need much practice and imagination. The artworks are made {#blank#}7{#/blank#} red paper because red is related to festivities (欢庆) and happiness in Chinese culture. 

These works could be displayed year- round, and they are {#blank#}8{#/blank#}especially during Chinese 

festivals because of their expression of hopes. Every year before Chinese New Year, people decorate (装饰){#blank#}9{#/blank#}houses with the" Fu" character which means good luck, blessing, and happi-ness. They put their" Fu" upside down to express people's {#blank#}10{#/blank#}for the coming of" Fu". 

 In China, when a baby is one year old. there is a fun activity, zhuazhou, at his or her birthday party. 

 On that day, people usually put some food, toys, and other things on a table. Then , parents put their tables a the table and they can take anything on it. 

 If a baby takes a pen, people will say he or she may be a good writer in the future. If a baby takes a cooker. people will know he or she will take good care of the family. When a baby takes a cake or a toy, people will think he or she may know how to have a good time in future life. 

Zhuazhou has a long history in China. lt begins in the Northern and Southern Dynasties(南北朝). And it becomes popular(受欢迎的) in the Tang and Song Dynasties. Ancient (古代的) people think of it as one of the most important rituals (仪式) in life. Now zhuazhou, is still (仍然) popular. Many Chinese families will have zhuazhou, parties these days zhuazhou, , as an old tradition(传统) in China, shows people's great love for a new member of their family.
