One day, Mr. White takes his mother to a shopping mall. He wants to buy a new pair of shoes for her.

There are so many beautiful shoes, and the old woman tries on（试穿） some shoes happily. But she doesn't like any of them when she knows the prices.

Seeing this, Mr. White speaks to the shopkeeper quietly（轻轻地）, "Next time. when my mother shows interest in（对……感兴趣） some pairs, just tell her the price is only 15 dollars."

"But that's not the real price!" the shopkeeper says.

"Don't worry! I will pay（付钱） for the shoes at the real price."

Then, the old woman gets her favorite shoes. Mr. White pays 15 dollars at first, and then he pays another 50 dollars privately.

Three days later, the shopkeeper asks Mr. White to come back and pay more money. Mr. White feels surprised. He asks, "Why?" Because your mother brings many of her friends to buy that kind of shoes."

In April 2021, a group of elephants started to walk north from their home in the wild in Yunnan. They quickly became stars and got a lot of attention from around the world. A team of eight people were following the elephants. They worked 24 hours a day, both on the ground and with drones(无人机).

The team shared some interesting moments of the elephants' trip on the Internet. The moments made people smile. For example, two baby elephants once fell down, and an adult(成年的) elephant had to use its long nose to help the babies stand. At another point, a sleeping baby elephant was on its mother's back. It moved its body and legs in the air. It seemed the baby elephant was dreaming about something funny.

These elephants were so cute. Some reporters from other countries even came to Yunnan. They got to know more about the elephants as well as the friendly people there.

No one knew why the elephants left home. Maybe they were looking for better food. Maybe they were lost. Maybe they were just having a good time.

Today, we are going to make a simple cake. Here are the materials (材料) and ways. Let's have a try!

Materials

□ 1 cup of white sugar

□ 1/2 cup of butter

□ 2 eggs

□ 2 spoons of vanilla extract (香草香精)

□ 1 and 1/2 cups of flour (面粉)

□ 1 and 3/4 spoons of baking powder (发酵粉)

□ 1/2 cup of milk

Ways

◆First, you should preheat (预热) your oven (烤箱). Then you should cover a pan (平底锅) with oil and flour.

◆You should mix up the sugar and butter in a medium bowl. Then you can add the eggs, one  at a time. Next, you can add the vanilla extract, flour and baking powder to it and mix well. Finally, you should add the milk. Then pour it into the prepared pan.

◆Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the oven. If you want to make cupcakes, you can bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

Here comes autumn!It is the third season of the year. In China, autumn starts in September.  It is still a little warm, but it gets colder and colder. The days also get shorter and shorter. The leaves on the trees begin to turn yellow and red. The air is fresh. It's a great season for kids to play outside. What do children do in autumn in different countries?

In China, students often have an autumn picnic. Usually, they go out into nature. For  example, kids in Shenzhen like to go to the Donghu Park to play games with their classmates, like skipping(跳绳)and playing football. 

Japanese students often go hiking with their parents or classmates when the leaves are red and yellow. It is a perfect way to get exercise. Mountain climbing in nice weather is also a good choice. 

For most children in the US, biking is a good autumn activity. Take a mountain bike ride and you can find new roads. Playing in leaf piles(堆)is popular(流行的), too. Kids jump onto a leaf pile. They are happy to see the colourful leaves fly all around. They also make leaf rain. It's a lot of fun. 

In the UK, kids love to camp outside with their parents. They make food over the fire and tell ghost(鬼怪)stories. 

①These days, a growing number of robots are invented. They can not only do difficult tasks in factories but also provide support at home or school. 

②Have you imagined a robot that can dance with you? Some educational robots can do that and they offer help in learning and problem-solving. In classrooms, these robots encourage students and bring them fun. At home, they can be the helpers for the students to improve creativity. For example, aNAO robot is a human-like robot with a cute face and two feet. It's about two-feet tall and can talk, move, and even dance. It helps students learn languages and programming. 

③Some companion robots are able to help your grandparents live more happily. Among them, the robot named The Five should be one of the most excellent companion robots. It was known to the public for the first time on September 24th, 2024. Different from other robots, The Five has got four legs with wheeled feet. Although its face looks small and strange, its powerful fingers enable it to lift an adult weighing 65 kg. It can help the elderly with many tasks including getting up, walking and carrying heavy things. Although it hasn't been widely used yet, it has already been tested successfully in a nursing home. There is no doubt that The Five can bring much convenience to our life. 

④However, there is still something robots can't do. For example, they don't have human feelings or creativity. Unable to think independently, they can only follow programmed instructions. Also, they are usually expensive to produce. 

⑤As modern technology improves, robots will become smarter in the near future, and people will enjoy an easier and more comfortable life. 

People have told stories about Robin Hood for more than 700 years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an invented character. In the legends(传说), Robin was quite smart and had a playful sense of humour. He loved playing jokes and tricks on people. The stories say that Robin Hood was a skilled archer(弓箭手)and he always carried a bow and arrow.

He wore green clothes and a hat with a green feather. He lived in Sherwood Forest with a group of outlaws(逃犯), known as his "Happy Men". The group included Friar Tuck, Little John, who was unusually tall, and Robin's true love, Maid Marian.

Sherwood Forest was a royal(皇家的)hunting forest in county of Nottinghamshire in England. Most people thought that forests were dangerous places to go. People travelling through the forests were often robbed by outlaws.

"Oh no, it's Robin Hood!"

The stories say that Robin Hood only took money from rich people so that he could give it to people who needed it. So he became famous for "robbing from the rich and giving to the poor".

The Sheriff(郡长)of Nottinghamshire was Robin's arch-enemy. It was the sheriff's job to keep the woods safe and to make sure that nobody stole the king's deer. The Sheriff of Nottinghamshire tried to catch Robin Hood, but never succeeded.

Centuries ago, people loved to tell each other stories of Robin Hood. Later he became a famous character in books, and nowadays Robin is still a well-loved hero in books, theatre, TV and films.
