"No building comes without carvings (雕刻), and carvings make buildings more valuable,"goes an old saying in Minnan, an area in southern Fujian Province. The saying refers to brick(砖) carvings, which were an important feature of the old red brick buildings in the area.

"The carvings were once commonly found on either side of the main entrance of Minnan's buildings. However, with development, the number of ancient red brick buildings has decreased, and Minnan's brick carvings have gradually disappeared from sight,"said Wu Jiandong, a young master brick carver from Quanzhou, Fujian Province.

The 42-year-old has learnt the traditional technique for years and now combines it with modern tastes to develop his own style of brick carving. Wu said that he hoped to be able to help the traditional craft continue through innovation(创新).

"Market demands have changed in recent years, and so has our thinking,"Wu said."We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop traditional crafts." People in Minnan love tea, so Wu created a series of carved brick tea decorations, including tea plates, cup holders, pot holders and other items.     ▲

Earlier this year, a pendant (挂件) decorated with a swallow tail ridge and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philippines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architecture and the moon of his hometown.

Because of the market's recognition of his work, Wu will be able to pass down the craft and further develop his pieces, and the popularity of short videos has also given him new hopes of making Minnan brick carvings more popular. This art form originated during the Song Dynasty and flourished (繁荣) during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is now an important part of national cultural heritage.

I can't remember whether I was nine or ten years old. I remember that it was the last day of my 4-H camp. I was looking in the mirror and checking my face for bruises（瘀伤）. The day before, for some silly reason, I had a fight with another boy. My head was still sore. We hadn't talked since the fight, but only stared（盯） coldly at each other. 

Still, I was in a good mood（心情） in the morning because I knew my mom was bringing some of her homemade pizzas as a treat for my brother, me, and our friends. Soon, I saw her walking towards our room. She had been bringing these pizzas to us every 4-H camp for years. I saw her smile as my brother and his friends all picked up the big pieces. She saved the last two pieces for me. I thanked her with a smile and started to eat when I saw that boy standing off to the side by himself. At that moment, something moved my heart. I walked over to him and gave him one of the pieces. We talked, laughed and ate. And for some reason that I didn't understand at the time, the pizza tasted better than ever before. 

I can see now what moved my heart: A little miracle（奇迹） was working inside me. It was moving me to forgive（原谅）, to give, and to love. And I'm so happy that I followed that guidance.

There is a small office next to my classroom.  There are three desks and three chairs.  They are for Mr.  Wang, Mr.  Zhang and Mr.  Li.  Mr.  Wang is our Chinese teacher.  Mr.  Zhang is our English teacher and Mr.  Li is our math teacher. 

A marathon is a long running race of 42.195kilometres. The first Olympic Marathon was held in Athens. Now, many cities host their own marathons every year. Some of the well-known marathons around the world are the New York City Marathon, the Boston Marathon and the Tokyo Marathon. Among them, the Boston Marathon is the oldest yearly Marathon in the world. As time goes by, the sport has become more than just a race.

Themes(主题) make marathons fun and meaning. Runners run for helping sick kids, memorizing important events, or just enjoying nature. A famous marathon in Gisborne, New Zealand, is known for being the first city in the world to welcome the sunlight every day. Runners can greet the sunrise as they run along the golden sandy beaches.

Marathon routes(线路) let people know more about this old sport. Some routes are very challenging for runners. Runners of all skill levels can sweat(流汗) freely and push their limits(极限). Some routes are well planned for runners to explore the many sides of a city. For example, the route of the Great Wall Marathon takes the runners along the great wonder of the world. In fact, it's also a chance to get to know Beijing, its people and local culture.

A marathon is quite a journey for runners to enjoy the run, challenge themselves and experience the culture. There is so much more behind the race for us to explore.
