    Are you good with money? Do you get pocket money from your parents or do you work to make money? Read on to find out about British teenagers and their money!

    Pocket money

    Most teenagers in Britain receive pocket money from their parents. They might have to do some housework to get pocket money, including cleaning, cooking, washing dishes and so on.

    Part-time work

    A part-time job is a choice for teenagers who don't have pocket money or who want to get extra money. About 15% teenagers have a job. Only children over the age of 13 can work. Popular part-time jobs for teens include babysitting, delivering (递送) newspapers, restaurant work and shop work. Children in Britain can work two hours a day at the most on a school day but not during school hours. During weekends and school holidays, they can work longer hours.

    Bank accounts (账户)

    Some children and teenagers have a bank account. There is no age limit at which you can open a bank account, but a bank manager can decide whether to open an account for a child or a young person. Parents can put pocket money directly into their child's bank account. Most banks have a prepaid bank card designed for young people.

    Mobile apps

    Many companies have made mobile apps for children, including GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. Parents can add money to their children's accounts and check to see how the money is spent. Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a card. The apps suggest that kids from 8 to 13 can use the cards.

    So, many teenagers are getting experience working part-time, dealing with banks and deciding whether to save or spend their money. These are all steps towards becoming a financially independent (经济独立的) person and making and looking after your own money.

House fires cause many deaths each year and a large number of these fires are unfortunately set by children.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Kids must understand that they'd better not play with fire. You should keep matches and lighters out of their reach.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} The main job of such an alarm is to protect you while you're asleep. You should have a smoke alarm outside each bedroom and on each floor of your home. You ought to have two plans for getting out of your house if there is a fire and practise these plans in the dark with your family.

A smoke alarm warns you of the danger. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Take action immediately. When you come to a closed door, check it with the back of your hand. If it feels hot, there may be smoke or fire behind the door, so take care. Once you are out of your house, call the fire department from a neighbor's house. If a family member or a pet is caught inside, you shouldn't go back in. Firemen know how to perform rescues safely.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see if the alarm and batteries are still working. A smoke alarm lasts about ten years. You ought to change it even if it seems to be working.

A. Most of these deaths can be avoided

B. But when you hear it, you don t have much time

C. A smoke alarm is only good if it's working properly

D. So, it's important to teach them that fire is a tool, not a toy

E. A smoke alarm greatly reduces your chances of being hurt in a fire

My good memory is often seen as something that we are thirsty for, while a bad memory as something that can hardly be changed. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} ,. Here are some tips(贴士) for you.

◆ Take an interest

We all remember the things we are interested in, and always forget the ones that bore us. This explains the reason why school boys remember football results easily but struggle(挣扎)with dates from their history lessons! Develop an active interest in what you want to remember. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

◆ Repeat things in chunks(块).

Repeating things in chunks is the best way to remember things in a short time, for example, remembering a long number for a few seconds. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

 The following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But divide them into "groups" or "chunks", and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.

◆ {#blank#}4{#/blank#} .

It's another good way to make up a story which includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this way. When they were tested later, they could remember about 90% of them. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Make up a story.

B. Take physical exercise.

C. The test result was really amazing!

D. Grouping numbers may help you to remember them.

E. As we know, too much pressure is very bad for the memory.

F. In fact, there is a lot that you can do to improve your memory.

G. One way to make yourself more interested is to ask questions — the more, the better!

We've all been there. It has been a long day, there is nothing in the fridge, cooking seems arduous and the solution is obvious: takeaway. It's easy for takeaways to become a regular habit. At some point, you have to wonder: even if you don't look different in the mirror, is it doing you any harm?

There is some evidence that too many takeaways is related to weight gain, but the relationship isn't clear. A 2022 study found a connection between eating takeaway-style food in the 24 hours before taking the survey and increased BMI in participants, although the researchers were careful to point out that they didn't know whether frequently eating takeaways made people overweight, or whether overweight people frequently eat takeaways. There is, however, evidence that simply living near(or walking past) a takeaway outlets(外卖店) or two can affect body weight, and reaching out to takeaway outlets near your workplace is most likely to attract people.

But why? Well, takeaway food are usually high in fat and salt - ingredients(成分) that are relatively cheap and taste good, making you more likely to reorder. There is also some evidence that junk food can be addictive(上瘾的), as the combination of salt, fat and sugar makes it hard to stop eating.

There is also the nutritional quality of the ingredients themselves. "Most takeaways contain highly processed ingredients and additives, nutrient-poor carbohydrates(碳水化合物) and plenty of deep-fried foods cooked in oil repeatedly heated to high temperatures," says Pearson.

So, what is the message? If you must place that order, consider the options:

The worst foods on any menu are likely to be fried ones, or anything covered in high-sugar sauces. If you order Chinese food, go for steamed dumplings, grilled fish or soup. If you are going for Indian food, go heavy on the side dishes, like bean and potato curries, which are often more flavourful and healthy.

Finally, try to cut your consumption(消费): consider changing your daily routes, hide the menus, and delete the apps on your phone.
