A rainforest is an area{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(cover) by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year. Rainforests have a great effect{#blank#}2{#/blank#}the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(much) heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(cause) certain natural disasters all over the world.

    In the past hundred years,{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (human) have begun destroying rainforests in search of the three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals,{#blank#}6{#/blank#}affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People   {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(obvious) have a need for the resources from cutting trees {#blank#}8{#/blank#}we will suffer much more than we will benefit.

    Rainforests are often called the world's drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (medicine) value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(lie)somewhere in the world's shrinking rainforests.

    You may not know the name John Smith Pemberton, but you must know the name of his{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(invent):Coca-Cola.

    Pemberton was a US chemist. When he was wounded in the Civil War, lie used medicine to ease the pain and gradually got{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (addict) to it. To light the addiction, he created his own drink by{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (use) leaves of coca and nuts of kola. He named{#blank#}4{#/blank#}," Pemberton's French Wine Coca". In the same year, the local government passed a ban on alcohol. Pemberton had to change the recipe to remove the alcohol.

    In 1886, Pemberton invited Willis Venable to help him perfect his new recipe. They used carbonated water and finally invented a new drink. It had no alcohol{#blank#}5{#/blank#}could still ease pain and clear the mind. Pemberton decided to sell it{#blank#}6{#/blank#}a drink rather than a medicine. In 1887, Pemberton sold part of the stock of his company to As a Candler,{#blank#}7{#/blank#}later created the Coca-Cola Company.

    Nowadays. Coca-Cola has become one of the most popular{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(drink) in the world. The company only offers semi-finished products to partners and won't sell the{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(origin) ingredients (成分).Its secret recipe was kept in the Sun Trust Bank in Atlanta for 86 years until the end of 2011. Since then, it{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(keep) in the World of Coca-Cola center in Atlanta.

    So why has English changed {#blank#}1{#/blank#} time? Actually all languages change and develop {#blank#}2{#/blank#} cultures meet and communicate with each other. At first the English spoken in England between about AD 450 and 1150 was very different from the English spoken today. It was based more on German {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the English we speak at present. Then gradually between about 800 and 1150, English became {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (little) like German because those {#blank#}5{#/blank#} ruled English spoke first Danish and later French. These new comers {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (rich) the English language and especially {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (it) vocabulary. So by the 1600s Shakespeare was able to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before. In 1620 some British {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (settle) moved to America. Later in the 18^th century some British people {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (take) to Australia too. English began to be spoken in both countries. Today, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} number of people learning English in the world is increasing rapidly.
