Every night, even long after my childhood years, she would come to me, push my long hair out of the way and then kiss my forehead to say goodnight.

I don't 1 when it started to dislike her hands pushing my hair that way. Finally, one night, I shouted at her. “Don't do that 2 — your hands are too rought(粗糙的)!” She didn't say anything 3. But never again did my mother 4 me with that familiar expression of her love. But because of my pride, I didn't tell her I was 5.

As years passed, I missed my mother's hands and goodnight kisses upon my 6 again and again. Sometimes the incidnet seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always7 appeared in my mind.

Now my mom is in her mid-seventies, still doing thins for me and my family with those two hands. Mom no longer has Dad, and on special8, I find myself drawn next door to 9 the night with her. It was late on Thanksgiving Eve. As I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a 10 hand hesitantly brushed the hari from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so 11, touched my brow.

In my12, for the thousandth time, I thought of the night I said the rude words to my mom.13 Mom's hand in my hand, I told her how sorry I was for that night. But she had forgotten—and forgiven—long ago.

That night, I fell asleep with a new appreciation for my gentle mother and her14 hands. And the guilt(愧疚感)I had had for so long was 15to be found.

Life will be peaceful if you always do kind things. I teach my daughters to develop a habit of 1 others. The little acts of 2 give you chances to provide service for others. They can make you feel how 3 it is to be kind and helpful.

We 4 in a rural (乡村的) area. Most of what we 5 is beautiful nature. One of the exceptions to the 6 is the rubbish that some people throw out of their car windows as they drive along the rural roads. One of the few 7 of living there is short of 8 public services, such as rubbish collection, which is common in the 9.

A helping behavior that I practice regularly with my daughters is 10 rubbish in our neighborhood. My daughters often have a match to see who can collect the most rubbish. They will often say to me in a(n) 11 voice, "There's some rubbish,Daddy—12 the car!"And if we have time, we will often get out of our car and pick it up. 13 it may seem strange, we do it. In fact, we 14it. We pick up rubbish in parks, on sidewalks, almost anywhere.

One day I saw a stranger picking up rubbish on the road. I stopped. He 15 his head and smiled,"I saw you doing this with your family. It's a good 16 to protect our environment."

There are many other ways to 17 kindness for others. You may share a dinner with a beggar, visit 18 old people in the nursing home,or help the blind 19 the street. You can think of something that can be finished 20 but helpful. It is fun, selfsatisfying, and what's more, it can set a good example. Helping others is helping yourself.

I often remembered the lesson Father taught me.

We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had 1 me to this spot in a small town not far from our home. I wondered2.

"Look down, Elsa," Father said. I gathered all my 3 and looked down. I saw the square in the centre of the village. And I saw the crisscross (十字形) of twisting, turning streets leading to the 4.

"See, my dear," Father said gently. "There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can't get to the place where you want to go5 one road, try another."

Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had 6 my mother to do something about the terrible school lunches. But she 7 because she could not believe the lunches were as 8 as I said.

When I turned to Father, he would not help. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a9 the value of an open, searching mind. By the time we reached home, I had a 10.

At school the next day, I11 poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked the cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. Everything went on smoothly. She swallowed one12 and spat it out. Quickly I told her what I had done, and Mother stated13that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!

Years later,I began to work as a fashion (时装) designer. Two years ago. I was busy getting ready to show my winter fashions. But just 13 days before the presentation the sewing girls all stopped working. I was as 14 as my models. "We'll never make it," one of them cried.

Accept the failure? 15 use wisdom to find another road to my goal? Then a great idea flashed through my mind—why not 16 the clothes unfinished?

And, exactly 13 days later, our showing turned out to be so 17 that it was a great success. What a showing it was! Some coats had no sleeves; others had only one. Many of our clothes were still in an early stage. Our different showing caught the18 of the public, and orders for the clothes 19 in.

Father's wise words had20 me once again, "There is always more than one way to the square."
