Most of us have experienced unforgettable moments in our lives. The moment that I will never forget happened when I was fifteen.

For the first fifteen years of my life, I was the only child in my family. I didn't have any siblings. Luckily, I had always had my parents, who loved and cared about me a lot. They helped solve any problems I met and they did everything for me. What I had never really thought about was that, someday, one of them would no longer be there for me.

One day, I found out that my mother was pregnant(怀孕的), and it was big news in my family. Everyone was excited and happy, especially me. I imagined that I would have a baby brother, and I thought about playing and having fun with him. One day after school, when I ran to the hospital, my brother had already been born. But my mother was still inside the operating room, while my father waited worriedly outside. After waiting for a long time, the doctor came out and told us that they had stopped the bleeding(流血). He told us not to worry and my mother would be fine.

Many thoughts flashed through my mind. I could only imagine that my life would be full of darkness, sadness and hopelessness. I would never again have the chance to enjoy the love of my mother. During these fifteen years, my mother was always around like my dearest friend, watching over me, no matter what happened. I could not imagine how I was possibly going to live without her.

Today, my brother is almost two years old. On the day of his birthday, I always remember

this unforgettable event in my life. I think I'm a really lucky person, with great parents and a lovely brother.

①Last week, I had an unforgettable experience. I was reading a book and had just come to the most wonderful part when my little sister Kate ran into my room. She was so noisy that I shouted at her angrily. Then I felt sad.

②"What's up, honey?" my dad came in.

③"I'm in a terrible mood (情绪)!" I said in a low voice. Then my dad suggested that tidying up things and fixing things can be helpful. I knew he was trying to help me. But every time someone suggested a way, I felt even worse!

④Just then, my friend Ollie stopped by with his new soccer ball. After knowing my problem, he advised me to play soccer or go for a walk. Right then, Ollie's soccer ball dropped onto the sidewalk (人行道). So we ran to catch before it went into the street. We ran and ran until it was stopped by a tree. Then I heard many birds singing in the trees happily. They were so sweet. After that, I found my problem was solved (解决) and I felt better.

⑤So, if you also find it hard to take other's advice when you're in a bad mood, maybe you could write down your own list of ideas and look at it when you need to. And it's important to talk about it with one person you trust.

Have you ever heard of the US Labour Day? It is one of{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(important) festivals in America. The first Labour Day parade{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (hold) in New York City in 1882. Thousands of workers walked through the streets to show the strength of labor organizations. In 1894, the government made Labour Day a national holiday{#blank#}3{#/blank#}they wanted to create a holiday for the working people.

Though the US Labour Day is a public holiday, people only have{#blank#}4{#/blank#}day off. On that day, there are all kinds of holiday{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(activity). Most Americans take{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(they) last summer vacations around this time. Some people take trips to the beach and have picnics there, some have outdoor barbecues* with their family and friends, and others choose{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(attend) public events. For many students, they usually have parties{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(excited) before the new school year begins. They sing, dance and enjoy the delicious food. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}relaxing they are! Labor Day is also the beginning of the professional and college football season in the US.

The US Labour Day is{#blank#}10{#/blank#} the first Monday in September. Why don't the US celebrate in May, like the rest of the world? One of the reasons is to add a holiday to bridge the long gap between Independence Day in July and Thanksgiving in November. 

School Gardens Could Help Children

Try More Vegetables

①It's not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school? New research suggests that a gardening programme in schools can help children eat more vegetables. 

②The study was carried out in eight schools. Each school was in the gardening programme for one school year. Every child in grades 3 — 5 received a total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the programme, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables. 

③The study found that vegetable intake increased greatly if the children grew their own produce across the year. Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of some illnesses. What's more, increasing the kinds of vegetables children are exposed(接触) to may also make mealtimes much easier. "Children who are often exposed to different kinds of vegetables are more likely to try new foods, " explains Dr Kerry Jones. For children, growing their own food is a powerful tool to increase their intake of the food. 

④Any chance to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. "If children are learning about vegetables at school, it's important for parents to encourage this interest at home, " says Jones. Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school. Parents and children can also read books together. Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents who offer useful messages. Older children may enjoy searching through cookbooks with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a delicious way. Besides, a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from. 

⑤Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term. 

Some students don't like maths. They think it's difficult. And here is what you can do.

Listen well in class. The maths teacher knows much. When you listen well, you can know much, too. So be a careful (仔细的) student and listen well. And you can ask your maths teacher for help if you don't know in class.

Ask your classmates for help. Your maths teacher isn't always with you. When you find a problem too difficult, you can ask your classmates for help, too. A classmate is a good friend. He or she must be happy to help you.

Practise it every day. Do you want to be good at maths? It takes time. You can't learn it well in a day. So practise it every day, and you can find it easy. Maths is a great subject. Let's learn it well.

There is a special club at Beijing New Oriental Yangzhou Foreign Language School, Jiangsu. It is called the Tongcao Flowers Paper Art Workshop. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Lots of them choose to join the special club and learn how to make tongcao flowers. Last month, the club just won the top prize at a school exhibition (展览).

The students and teachers worked for two months to make thousands of beautiful tongcao flowers. The flowers filled up a 24-square-meter exhibition area, covering the walls and floor.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} This paper comes from a traditional Chinese medicine called tongtuo wood. Known as "the flower that never dies", tongcao flowers can stay beautiful for many years.

Making tongcao flowers takes many steps. First, cut the tongcao paper into different sizes. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Next, put the petals together like a real flower. Finally, color the paper.

Ren Daiyang, 14, joined the workshop last year. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}"The tongcao paper dries fast, so I need to shape it in just 10 seconds."
