Since humans sent the first satellite（卫星） to space in the 1950s，scientists have been studying an important topic：how to grow plants in space if humans live there one day.A recent experiment at the Tiangong space station makes a big step forward.

Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings（幼苗） during the Shenzhou XIV mission.The researcher said，"The rice seedlings are growing very well."Since the rice experiment began on July 29，the seedlings of the tall shoot rice variety（高杆水稻品种） have reached a height of 30 centimeters.The seedlings of the dwarf rice variety（矮杆水稻品种） have grown to 5 centimeters，China Daily reported on August 30，2022.

While there have been other rice experiments in space，this one is the first of its kind to produce the complete life cycle of a plant—it begins with a seed and ends with a grown plant producing new seeds.

Such food﹣growing experiments are not for astronauts.They can solve food problems on Earth.By sending seeds to space，we can create mutated（突变的） seeds that can produce higher yields（产量）on Earth.

For more than 30 years，China has developed over 260 new types of seeds in space.They are planted on Earth every year.

According to Yao Tong，an engineer from Hainan Aerospace Engineering Breeding Research Center，30%of strawberries sold in Beijing are "space strawberries"，which are as big as eggs.The center has also produced "space tomatoes"with yields increased by 30%，and "space bananas"with a growth cycle shortened from 13 months to 9 months.

In recent years, we can see some changes on P. E. classes at schools. Besides basic trainings like running and jumping, students are having a lot of fun now. Here are some examples. 

Tai Chi

Gao Ming enjoys the Tai Chi class at his school. "At first, we only learned Tai Chi in P. E. class. Day by day, my classmates fell in love withit! There is a Tai Chi competition in our school every year. Different from ballgames, doing Tai Chi makes me calm down and relaxed. It helps me get ready for other classes." said Gao, "I also keep practicing in my free time and it has been a part of my life."

Hip-hop

Ren Hui is a fan of hip-hop and the school helps her develop the hobby. "We can choose the type (类型) of our P. E. class at the beginning of every term and I always go for hip-hop." Ren said "It doesn't need much experience, so anyone can have a try. Every Monday, we learn a new movement. Then we review it on Thursday and Friday. I'm very happy to make new friends during dancing!"

Diabolo (空竹)

Playing diabolo, a traditional folk game, is a class for nearly all the students at Nanjing Yuhua Primary School. The much-loved sport includes whole-body exercise. "It is my favorite sport. It can help me train my reaction (反应) speed. Most importantly, it's so cool and fun. " Ma Jiaying, an eighth-grade girl said.

"It is especially beautiful. No matter who you are or what your age is, seeing something so fantastic is truly attractive, " said Jin Huilin, who was attracted by the rich patterns (花纹) when he saw Yuhua stones for the first time. 

Nanjing Yuhua stone is a type of water-worn stone mainly found in areas like Nanjing and Yizheng in Jiangsu Province. It is known for its smooth texture (质地), bright colours and rich patterns. 

Because Yuhua stones are often got from mines(矿山), dry Yuhua stones look plain and grey, hiding their true quality（质量）. Jin and his friends visited Luhe mining sites in Nanjing, wearing rubber shoes to collect these stones on rainy days. Rain made the stones' detailed patterns clearer. "It's better to carry a bottle of water on dry days to pour on the surface of the stones. Sometimes you can find something surprising, " Jin said. 

According to Jin, appreciating(欣赏) stones starts with their outer qualities like texture, colour, and patterns.     ①     However, "real appreciation of the stones requires cultural knowledge; otherwise, they might seem like just pieces of colour, " said Jin. With cultural knowledge and imagination, people could see different patterns, such as trees, mountains, or flowers. "     ②     The stones a person chooses as their favourites can show their cultural awareness（意识）, " Jin added. 

Watching patterns of stones in the water is not the only way to appreciate stones. Jin also mentioned other ways.     ③     He gave some examples. "Some people enjoy holding stones in their hands, appreciating their special textures, or using strong light to discover hidden patterns that are even more beautiful. Others choose to put the stones on the desk, inviting guests to appreciate the stones from different positions, " said Jin.     ④   

For Jin, stone watching brings joy and something fresh to his life. "Some people like to have lively pets while I prefer stones for their lasting nature, " Jin added. 

Have you ever unlocked a shared bike? Have you ever ordered a meal online? Have you ever enjoyed watching the short- form videos on the Internet? Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.

Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.

Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&. T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn't think Motorola's product was good enough. He didn't like AT&T's idea of a car phone, either. The man had a new idea. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.

It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design the world's first cell phone. The product was called Dyna TAC. People could talk on it for 25minutes before its battery（电池）died. The phone's short battery life wasn't a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why? Well, the phone was too heavy（1,100 grams）to hold in hand for more than 25minutes!

On 3 April, 1973, Cooper made the world's first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, "I'm calling you on a cell phone. It's a real, handheld cell phone." On the other end of the line, there was only silence.

Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They're much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 96, is surprised at the progress.

But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. "Keep learning all your life," he says, "or you'll lose the ability to learn-- that would be terrible!"

Meiyu, is from Turkey (土耳其). She is the youngest child of her family. After high school, many people decided to learn English or Japanese, but Meiyu decided to learn Chinese in university. She learnt Chinese for four years in Ankara University in Turkey, and got her Chinese name Meiyu there. 

Meiyu fell in love with Chinese after going to university. She became more interested after she knew more about Chinese history. In the beginning, many people did not understand her decision. But they all said Meiyu had made a right choice when she graduated from university. Because at that time, more Chinese have been visiting Turkey. The trade between the two countries also requires Chinese- speaking people. "Being able to speak Chinese means more job opportunities, " said Meiyu. 

And then she worked in Wuhan, China. Besides going on studying Chinese, she showed great interest in Chinese kung fu as well, so she spent her free time on kung fu training with her coaches. Not only could kung fu help improve her health, but its history and culture also attracted(吸引) Meiyu. Meiyu said, "The moreI know about China, the luckier I feel to have been here. But the truth is that fun and pain go together in the process of learning. "

After Meiyu worked in China for two years, her friends wanted her to stay in China, but her parents hoped she could go back home. Meiyu thought it was difficult to decide. "Even if I go back to Turkey, I will choose Chinese language education as my job, " said Meiyu.
