Parents and children often face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting pocket money, learning to save, and deciding to buy expensive things. The goal of most parents is to teach their kids how to deal with money wisely.The goal of most kids is getting money to spend.How can families achieve these goals?

The Tidier family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids make some money. Their son, Ryan, 17, has been watering in the garden since he was 8. He owned his own tools with the help of his parents. Now he has saved $7,800.Besides, he bought a bike and a wonderful sound system. And he is going to buy a car next year.

Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady manages a company towards children and young adults."They shouldn't be always thinking of spending money," Brady warns. Instead, they should understand basic rules for making money, saving money, and managing money.

That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past ten years, most Americans aged 18 to 24borrowed nearly $3,000 on credit card( 信用卡). Among high school seniors, four out of five have never taken a class about money.

Giselle Lopez, of New York City, learned the hard way. So far, she has owed(欠) $2,000 on her first credit card. Her parents refused to pay,so Giselle got a job. Then she paid the money off slowly by herself. "Now every time I use money, I know that it comes from my own pocket," Giselle says. "That gives me a sense of responsibility for my actions." Different kids will have different style s when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use money doesn't have to mean setting strict rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their own money to consider, they can learn to set those rules themselves.

Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people; it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction; and it can cause social pressure in a group.

An important negative(负面的）effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic that a person prefers to keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.

If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip. Sharing the latest rumor (传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the "in group". In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority (优越感). 

Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. For example, if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can be sure that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and don'ts carried through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.

Next time you feel the urge (冲动) to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your "juicy story" might have.

The girls spent the rest of the day preparing a play. The sisters often performed plays for their friends. A lot of girls arrived about six o' clock and took their places in the big bedroom. The play was a great success. Everybody enjoyed it very much. The girls were still laughing and clapping when Hannah came in and said," Supper is ready."

A surprise was waiting for them on the dining room table- dishes of ice cream, pink and white, fresh fruit, cakes and real French chocolates. And in the middle of all this delicious food there were four vases of beautiful flowers. The girls couldn't believe their eyes.

" Did the fairies bring the supper?" asked Amy.

" No, Santa Claus brought it," said Beth.

" Mother did it," Meg said.

" No! Aun t March sent it!" cried Jo.

" You are all wrong," said Mrs. March." Old Mr. Laurence sent it."

" The Laurence boy's grandfather!" Said Meg." Why did he do that? We don't know him!"

" Hannah told one of his servants(仆人) the story of the Hummels. Mr. Laurence was sorry to hear about your poor Christmas breakfast, so he decided to give you a surprise."

" My mother says he's very proud," said one of the girls at the table." She says that he doesn't like mixing with his neighbors. His grandson has to stay in the house and study all day. We invited him to a party once, but he didn't come. He's very shy."

"I am going to talk to him one day," said Jo." He needs to have some fun. I am going to invite him to our next play!"

 What sports do you like doing? Are you in any of your school's teams? If yes, how did you make it?

I did not pass the boys' basketball tryouts (预选赛) in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me, but my name was not on the list. On the way home, I was both angry and sad."I can't believe I didn't make the team,"I said loudly." How did Alex make the team? He can't catch up with a tortoise(乌龟)! Why is Jimmy a better choice than me? He just stands around moving his arms!"" Adam!" my mom said, cutting me off." Why don't you just stop and think? Maybe you need a little more practice."

 Suddenly(突然地),I knew she was right. It was nobody's fault(错误) but my own. I decided to work hard for the team over the next year. I practiced hard every day and had lessons every week. When summer came, I joined lots of basketball camps. Through camp after camp, my abilities(能力) grew, and I knew I was ready for tryouts in the fall.

 The day finally came. As everyone crowded around the lists, I played it cool and waited for my chance to read the names. I slowly looked down the list. Not only did I make it on the list, but my name was the very first!
