Spider-Man is often thought of as one of the best superheroes of all time. But did you know that he almost wasn't created?

Stan Lee came up with the idea for Spider-Man in 1962. He was a different kind of superhero from what had come before. He was a teenager who had everyday problems. Back then, superheroes were strong grown men who saved people. Teenagers were helpers. The heroes didn't have to worry about real-life problems like paying bills (账单) and caring for an old relative. They flew in the sky and fought aliens. Stan Lee was about to change that.

When Stan told his boss about Spider-Man, his boss said it was "the worst idea" he'd ever heard, reported the Vintage News. For a time, it seemed like that was the end for Stan's friendly neighborhood hero. But then, Stan had an idea. One of Marvel Comics' books was getting canceled. According to Stan Lee. "Nobody cared what you put inside a book that was going to be killed." So, Stan Lee teamed up with artist Steve Diiko, who made Spider-Man's iconic (标志性的) look. Together, they put Spider-Man onto the 15th and last issue (期) of the comic book Amazing Fantasy. Spider-Man was a huge hit. The issue, showing the superhero on its cover, was a bestseller. And so, Spider-Man was given his own comic book, The Amazing Spider-Man. He has become one of the most beloved fictional (虚构的) characters of all time.

It's Jimmy's birthday and he is 9 years old. He gets a lot of presents from his family and one of them is a big drum（鼓）. His grandfather buys it for him

Jimmy likes it very much. He plays with it every day and he often makes a terrible noise (可怕的声音), His father works in the day and Jimmy is in bed when he gets home in the evening. So his father doesn't hear the noise.

But Mrs. Black doesn't like the noise, so one morning she takes a sharp knife and goes to Jimmy's room when he hits his drum. She says to him, "Hello! Jimmy. Do you know there is something very nice in your drum? Here is a knife. Please open the drum and let's find it. "

A young man worked very hard at his lessons. He was too busy to have a rest. At last, he became ill, so he couldn't go to sleep. Every night, when he went to bed, he closed his eyes and tried to sleep. But he always stayed awake and couldn't fall asleep.

After some days, he decided to see a doctor. "I just can't go to sleep at night. What should I do? Could you please help me?"

"I have a suggestion (建议)" said the doctor. "Try counting numbers (数数). By the time you reach one thousand, you'll be asleep. I'm sure of it."

The next day the man returned to the doctor's office. "Well," said the doctor, "how are you today? Did you try my suggestion?"

The man still looked tired. "Yes," he said, "I tried counting one, two, three—up to one thousand. But when I reached five hundred and sixty-nine, I began to feel sleepy. I had to get up and drink some tea so that I could go on counting up to one thousand. But then I still couldn't fall asleep."

Years ago a farmer owned land near the sea. He always needed workers to help him, but most people did not want to work on farms near the sea. They were 1 of the terrible storms that often hit and destroyed（毁坏）buildings and plants. 

Finally, a short man came to the farmer. "Are you a good worker?" the farmer asked him. "Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man. Although surprised by this answer, the farmer, who really needed 2 , gave him the job. The little man 3 very hard on the farm, and the farmer felt 4 with his work. 

Then one night the wind blew loudly in from the sea. Jumping out of bed, the farmer 5 to the short man's room. The farmer shouted, "Get up! A 6 is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!" But the little man lay in bed 7 and said, "No sir. I told you I can sleep when the wind blows."

Hearing the words, the farmer hurried outside to 8 the storm on his own. To his surprise, he found that everything was tied down and nothing could be blown away. The farmer then 9 what the short man meant, so he returned to his bed to sleep while the wind blew. 

When you're prepared, you have nothing to worry about. Can you 10 when the wind blows through your life? 

 My phone rang. It was a text from an unfamiliar number, showing a photo of a smiling man in his 30s. "What a strange picture to receive!" I thought to myself. 

 For the past three years, I have been getting texts meant for this man, Jared. When the second text came, I was a playful sixth grader. 

"My Mom just told me that the Football Club will host a free barbeque dinner on Saturday! Hope you all will enjoy it, " it said. 

"YUMMMY!" I carefully responded. 

 The story of Jared became deeper. I learned that he was part of the" Bowery Mission, " which sounded like a gaming group. Looking it up, I realized it was an organization that helped poor families. This was around the same time I stopped volunteering in my community. I spent more time taking art classes and trying different sports. I then joined the group texts. When a message came about donating food, I texted back, "Count me in!"

 However, I started to feel bad about this lie. A man sent a long message, talking about the hopeless moments in his life. As I imagined what a good friend Jared could be, I felt ashamed that I was unable to provide the support this man needed and realized that I was not even a good listener to my own friends. 

 Throughout this time, I noticed how much Jared's life has changed and I have also been discovering who I am. Learning from Jared, I have grown out of the naughty self, made more efforts tor my community, and become a more understanding friend. Last month, I received another text. Yet, I replied:" Hey, sorry, this is-not Jared, but I hope he is doing well. "
