One day, two fishermen were fishing in a pond（池塘）. Both of them were looking forward to getting a big catch. The first fisherman caught a big fish in a few minutes. He was very happy. He put the fish in his box. He would cook it in the afternoon. Soon the second fisherman also caught a large fish. However, he threw it back into the pond. Later, he caught many more big fish, only to throw them back into the water again and again. 

The first fisherman was surprised. "Why are you throwing the fish back into the water? They are beautiful and big!" The second fisherman answered, " l know they are big, but I don't have a pan(锅)that is big enough to cook big fish! I'm looking for a small fish that fits my cooking pan.

The first fisherman was surprised by the answer. He told the second fisherman that he could just cut the big fish into small pieces to fit them into the small pan. 

Many of us are just like the second fisherman. We don't think carefully and this sometimes causes us to lose chances. 

Albert Einstein was a world famous scientist. He was born in Germany and later lived in America. He was best known for his theory of relativity（相对论）. This theory changed the way we understand space and time. Einstein had wild hair and always looked deep in thought. He always reminded us to keep asking questions.

One day, a young man asked Albert Einstein what the secret of success was. The scientist told him that the secret of success was hard work. A few days later the young man asked the same question again. Einstein was very "annoved". He did not say anything, but wrote a few words on a piece of paper. On the paper it was written: A=X+Y+Z.

"What does this mean?" asked the young man.

"‘A' means success." explained the old scientist. "‘X'stands for hard work, ‘Y' forgood method（方法）and ‘Z' means stop talking and get down to work."

It was a Sunday morning. Helen and Jim were taking a walk on a beach. It was a quiet beach and there were no other people. They felt very relaxed and happy, walking in the sunshine.

Then Jim saw a bottle (瓶子) on the beach. He picked it up and found something in it. He took it out. Helen ran to look and said, "Wow! A treasure (宝藏) map! Let's follow it." 

"OK. We are here and the treasure is here. Let's go! I'll read," said Jim.

"Walk north 100 meters. Stop at a big tree. Turn right and then go straight. Stop when you get to the river. Cross the bridge. Turn left and walk along the river. Stop in front of a big rock (岩石). The treasure is behind the big rock."

"Here!" Jim said excitedly.

"There is a box!" said Helen. In the box was a very old note (便条).

Jim and Helen were disappointed and had to go back.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.

A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.

Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.

Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.

However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
