You may have heard about the Ig Nobel Prize(搞笑诺贝尔奖). It is given to scientists who  do interesting and sometimes silly studies. China has a similar prize called the Pineapple Science Awards. Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum in Hangzhou started the award in 2012. "Our understand science out of curiosity(好奇心) and bring out their love and respect for science," Xu Rui, from Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum, told Xinhua.

On Nov 11, 10 fun studies from around the world got the Pineapple Science Awards 2023.

Let's look at two of them.

Medical prize:

Why does plucking(拔) white hair lead to more white hair? Sun Qi and her team at New York University. New hair grows from follicles( 毛囊). In follicles,there lives a special kind of cell. These cells give color to our hair. They move around inside the follicles. To create colors like black and brown, they need to be at the bottom of hair follicles. After that, they go up to the top of the follicles and start moving toward the bottom to create color again as more hair grows. However, if we pluck our hair too often, the cells may get stuck at the top of the follicles. So they stop making colors, leading to more white hairs.

Mathematics prize: tossing a coin

Heads or tails? Tossing(抛) a coin is not as fair as you might think. A research team from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands held a coin-tossing marathon. During the marathon, 48 teachers and students used 46 different currencies(货币), including Chinese coins. They spent 8 hours a day for 81 days tossing the coins. After 350,757 tosses, the team found that the side facing up when tossed is more likely to land facing up, at a ratio(比例) of about 51:49,

Time for School

Hello, my name is Li Hui. Hui is my first name, so you can 1 me Xiaohui. I am a 14- year- old boy. I come 2 China. I am in Shanghai now. Tom is my good friend. He is not Chinese. He is 3 English boy. But he is in Shanghai, 4 his parents work here. He is thirteen years old, so he is younger than me. Tom's Chinese name is Da- lin. We are both in 5 , Grade Six in No.6 Middle School. And both of us like 6 basketball. We often play it with our classmates after class. We can play basketball 7 , but I think Tom plays better than me. Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian 8 our favorite basketball stars. We often watch basketball games on TV. We want 9 basketball players in the future. Mr Li is my favorite teacher. He teaches 10 math. I like math and PE. I always have a good day at school.

"BANG!" the door caused a reverberation (回响). It was just standing there, with Dad standing on one side, and I on the other side. 

We were both in great anger. "Jack! Never set foot in this house again!" shouted Dad. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. 

The street lights were shining, causing my feeling of sadness. I walked about, knowing nowhere to go. 

A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree(无忧无虑的). 

But now… I don't know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting older. We are just like two persons coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron(铁) door between us that can never be opened. I walked in the streets with a heavy heart. I walked on, and there were fewer and fewer people in the streets. When I finally reached the apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on. 

I thought to myself, "Is Dad waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?"

In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, Dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. 

All the lights were off except Dad's. 

Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn't know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. However, after an argument he has the habit of putting my arms underneath the quilt (被子) while I am sleeping. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature. 

The light was still on. "Am I wrong?" With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realised that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love — it is second to none. 

One evening, Brian told Mom that the boys at school had been laughing at him, because they knew he had to do the dishes every night at home. "I didn' t like it. Today 1 called me Cinderella," he said seriously. Mom could tell that Brian was 2 about what had happened. After dinner, Brian went straight upstairs, without stopping to 3 as usual. "I' ve got a lot of homework to do," he said. Mom was surprised but said nothing.

 When Brian got home from school the next day, he said 4 , "I' ve solved it, Mom." He had told the boys at school that he wouldn't do the dishes anymore, as he wasn't a 5 , "I'm not Cinderella," he said.

 That evening, before going to bed, Brian asked, "Mom, do you have a 10 pair of trousers for me? My laundry(洗衣) basket is full." Mom answered that she had been busy that day. The next evening 11 dinner, when Brian headed upstairs later to start his homework as usual, he came straight back down again. "Mom, my laundry basket is still full. Can you tell me 12 you will put a wash on?" he said. "Maybe tomorrow," Mom answered.
