The Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), China's leading aircraft maker, created the country's first fully solar-powered drone (无人机). The large drone, Qimingxing 50, took off at 5:50 pm on September 3rd, 2022, from an airport in Yulin of Shaanxi Province and stayed in the air for 26 minutes before landing on the same runway. AVIC said that all systems of the unmanned plane functioned well on its first flight.

Powered by six electric motors with solar batteries, the drone is designed to conduct long-time operations in near space. Near space is that part of Earth's atmosphere at altitudes of 20 to 100 kilometers. It is above the top altitudes of commercial airliners but below orbiting satellites.

Qimingxing 50, also called "quasi-satellite", features high operational efficiency and eco-friendliness and will be tasked with high-altitude reconnaissance (侦察), forestry fire monitoring, atmospheric environmental inspection, aerial mapping, communication signal relay and other operations.

"Thanks to its capability to conduct very long endurance flights in near space, the drone can essentially become a substitute for satellites," a Chinese aerospace expert said. Satellite services are not always available due to the limited number of satellites and relatively fixed schedules of overhead passes. In time-sensitive missions, near-space drones can offset these disadvantages, the expert said, noting that satellite services could also be damaged in wartime, so near-space drones could replace them in this occasion.

The successful first flight of the Qimingxing-50 lays a solid foundation for the development of key technologies in the country's new energy field, the composite (复合的) material field, which will enhance China's ability to perform tasks in near space and over far oceans. AVIC will seize the opportunity to increase investment and speed up the development of large solar-powered unmanned aircraft.

(1)、What do we know about AVIC?
A、It produced the world's largest unmanned plane. B、It started the trend of using solar batteries in aircraft. C、It developed China's first fully solar-powered drone. D、It greatly improved the speed of commercial airliners.
(2)、What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Qimingxing 50?
A、Its design features. B、Its diverse functions. C、Its operating procedures. D、Its environmental benefits
(3)、What does the underlined word "offset" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A、Detect. B、Expose. C、Analyze. D、Remove.
(4)、What will AVIC do in the future?
A、Increase investment in the new energy industry. B、Accelerate the development of large solar drones. C、Create a new composite material to manufacture aircraft. D、Make Qimingxing-50 conduct long-time tasks over far seas.

Going green seems to be fad(时尚)for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can't really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

On April 22,2011,we decided to be green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond the easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different things to do and this was no easy task.

With the idea of going green every single day a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.

Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyles. We now shop at organic(有机的) stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don't need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planets.

Finding your feet in a new town can be hard, especially if you're covered in fur and don't speak the language. But for pets new to Marlborough, help is at hand.

Marlborough SPCA and the Railway Café, in Blenheim, have joined forces to help welcome pets and their people to the area with morning teas. They hope the morning teas will get tails and tongues wagging(狗摇摆尾巴)as well as giving advice on how to make the move easier.

Railway Café owner Leanne Harris came up with the creative plan as a way to help welcome people to the area. Leanne moved to Marlborough from Auckland two years ago and said she first struggled to find friends and feel part of the community. "Coming from Auckland I thought people would open their doors and that there would be neighbors calling round with cake. I expected people to come to me and, of course, it wasn't like that. I did get lonely." "I hope to save newcomers having to wait as long as I did to feel part of it all. I would like to welcome them to the town."

Free plates of sandwiches, cakes will be offered, for the people, while there will be special yoghurt and banana treats for the dogs. The morning teas will take place in the covered area at the back of the popular café beside the railway station off Grove Rd.

Leanne said she was happy to devote both her time and effort to giving back to the community and felt the project was a great fit with the SPCA.

"Volunteering is such an amazing thing to do and it changed things for me completely, and I met some amazing people with similar interests."

SPCA Op Shop manager Karina Greenall, originally from the United Kingdom, said she also wanted to help. "I can give advice on how to resettle pets, the best parks to go to, where the best walks are and where the Civil Service are in town." There will be volunteering chances too for people where they can help out and hopefully make friends too.

It's widely recognized that play-based learning significantly benefits the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional health of children. Recent research suggests that certain board games, such as Chutes and Ladders and Monopoly, can further contribute to enhancing their mathematical abilities.

A team of researchers from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, Chile, reached this conclusion after a comprehensive analysis of 19 studies conducted between the years 2000 and 2023. With the exception of one study, all focused on the correlation between board games and the development of math skills.

In these studies, children aged between 3 and 9 engaged in board games under the watchful eyes of teachers or trained adults. The structured 20-minute gaming sessions were held twice weekly for a duration of approximately six weeks. In some of the studies, one group of children (the intervention group) played board games that were centered around numbers, while another group (the control group) played games that did not necessitate mathematical skills. In other instances, both the intervention and control groups indulged in number-based games, but they were assigned different games, such as Monopoly and Dominoes.

The mathematical proficiency of the children was evaluated both at the beginning and the end of each study. The researchers were particularly interested in observing improvements in four pivotal areas: the ability to name numbers and exhibit basic numerical understanding, for instance, recognizing that "nine is greater than three." They also monitored the children's progress in addition and subtraction, as well as their burgeoning interest in mathematics.

The findings of this study were published in the academic journal Early Years on July 6, 2023. The results indicated that engaging in board games positively influenced the children's math skills in more than half of the four key areas examined. Moreover, nearly a third of the children in the intervention groups outperformed their counterparts in the control groups on math assessments.

The researchers are optimistic that their findings will encourage the development of new board games specifically tailored for educational purposes in classrooms. In the meantime, consider enhancing your own mathematical skills by organizing a board game night with family and friends this summer—it all adds up to a fun and educational experience!
