Early years

Charles Darwin was one of the six children from a big family. His grandfather and father were doctors and the young Darwin went to Edinburgh University to study medicine. However, he hated to see blood and he soon realized that he couldn't be a doctor. He then went to Cambridge University and discovered that he had a great interest in studying plants, insects and animals. Luckily, one of Darwin's university teachers helped him join the perfect trip for a biologist: a voyage around the world to study nature.

The Beagle

In 1831, Charles Darwin left Plymouth on The Beagle, a ship that took him around the world for five years. While he was travelling, he studied the plants and animals in the countries and on the islands that the ship visited. Darwin also spent his time on The Beagle writing notes about the things he had seen. When he finally arrived back in Britain, Darwin was already starting to create his famous theory that all living things had a common ancestor (祖先).

Down house

At home at Down House, a place that you can still visit today, Darwin wrote many articles and books about his travels, but he didn't want to make anything about his theory known to the public. He worked in his study, where he wrote 250,000 words about his theory of evolution (进化论), but he was frightened about what people might say about his idea that monkeys were the ancestors of humans. He thought the public would be against it and was so frightened that he became ill with worry. However, when another scientist started to write about similar ideas, Darwin decided to print his book, On the Origin of Species.

Most scientists accepted Darwin's theory and people continue to study it today. On 12th February, the day he was born, Darwin Day is celebrated around the world to encourage more people to study the natural world.

Cai Xuzhe dreamed of flying high when he was young. He was a new face on the Shenzhou-14 team. He spent 12 years as an astronaut（宇航员） getting ready for his first trip to space.

"I am happy and proud but feel more about my duty（责任）," Cai told reporters. Cai and other two team members, Chen Dong and Liu Yang, left the earth on board the Shenzhou-14 spaceship in June of 2022, for a six - month stay in space. They finished the work of building the Tiangong space station.

Cai was born in 1976 in the countryside of Shenzhou City, Hebei Province. He showed interest in planes as a child. When he heard a plane flying past, he ran out and looked at it till it flew away.

Cai went to an Air Force flight college（空军飞行学院）. After finishing college, he began to work at an airport. The airport was in poor condition. However, he studied and trained his flying skills there carefully. InMay 2010, Cai became a Chinese astronaut and underwent（接受） hard training. He did best in his training and finally became a Shenzhou-14 team member. He tried his best to make his dream come true.

We made a survey (调查) on 300 young people about what they like to do on weekends. One hundred people are from the ages of 11～18，one hundred 19～26 and one hundred 27～35. The following chart (图表) shows their answers：

I saved the rice and wheat carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away. 

Then when my crop(庄稼) bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them, but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows(稻草人), which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat. 

With my new rice and wheat to store, I found a new problem. The fine rice and wheat ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly bowls — one for rice and one for wheat. 

Next I made some tools from hard wood and cloth to make bread. I made bread with my tools. I spent the third year on the island in farming and making bread. 

Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore(探索) the island by sea. 

I tried to turn over the ship's boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined(坚定的) to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn the tree into a boat. 

When it was time to sail, I realised I had made my boat too far from the nearest river. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of work. 

I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.

Once there is a clever man named Michael Brown. He has a lot of money, so he buys a big, beautiful house with a lot of fruit trees in his garden (花园). Next door lives John Miller. His house is small and old. He often wants to make Michael get into trouble (陷入困境). He throws rubbish (扔垃圾) in Michael's garden and does some other bad things. 

One morning, when Michael gets up and goes outside, he sees lots of rubbish under the apple trees in his garden. He isn't angry, instead, he wants to clean it up. He moves all the rubbish away. After that, he takes a basket to John's door. 

John opens the door and wants to argue with (吵架) Michael. But to his surprise(惊讶), Michael gives him a basket of fresh apples, saying, "Morning, my dear neighbor. Here are some apples for you. They are from my garden. "

Seeing that, John's face turns red and he says, "I'm so sorry for what I did. Thank you very much for your apples. "
