People often think of the North Pole and the South Pole as similar frozen wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine. 

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as-30 F. 

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. More than 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them. 

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic on foot, People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place. 

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water called "leads". Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes. 

Green Energy for Today and Tomorrow

Did you know that most of the energy we use comes from the sun? For example, the sun helps plants to grow. Plants that grew millions of years ago turned into coal, oil, and natural gas（天然气）. We call these fossil fuels（化石燃料）.

However, fossil fuels cause pollution. This is bad for the Earth. Fossil fuels are also nonrenewable. Some day they will be gone. So, scientists want people to use green energy.

Why is green energy important? First, it is clean. It doesn't hurt the Earth. Next, it is renewable. It won't run out. Green energy gives us almost 25% of the electricity we use today.

What are the main sources（来源） of green energy?

Water Power

Water power uses moving water in rivers and dams（堤坝）. Moving water has energy. Water power makes 

16.6% of the electricity we use.

Wind Power

Is wind power new? No, it isn't. People used wind power many years ago. Wind power makes 4% of the electricity we use.

Solar Power

Solar power comes from sunlight. The sun shines on solar panels（太阳能电池板）, and electricity is made. Solar power is now as cheap as some fossil fuels. It makes 

1.5% of the electricity we use.

Biomass energy（生物质能）

Biomass energy is energy that we get from plants around us. For example, dead wood or grass is burned in power stations. This makes electricity. Biomass energy is green energy because we plant new trees or crops（庄稼） after we use it. Biomass energy makes 2% of the electricity we use.

New Green Energy

The ocean rises and falls each day. This moving water can make electricity. We call it tide power. There is also heat under the Earth's surface. Scientists can use this heat for energy, which is called heat power. We may find other sources of green energy in the future.

Some day, green energy could make 100% of the electricity we use. That's good news for the Earth!

The key to learning a new skill isn't necessarily how many hours you spend practising, but the way you practise. Scientists have found that by simply changing your training method, you can keep your 1 more active in the learning process and spend less time reaching the required standard. People think simply 2 a skill—for example, practising the same piece of music on the piano or playing the same level in your game over and over again—is the best way to learn it. Instead, it turns out that there might be a 3 way to level up. 

Recently, researchers got 86 volunteers to learn a new 4 —moving a cursor(光标) on a computer screen by pressing a small device, 5 using a mouse. The volunteers were divided into three groups, and 6 spent 45 minutes practising the skill. Six hours later, one of the groups was asked to repeat the same training exercise again, 7 another group to perform a different version(版本) that required a different pressing8 to move the cursor. The third group was 9 asked to complete the first training, acting as a control(对照组). 

In the end, everyone was 10 on how they could perform the new skill. As a result, the group that had repeated the original(原来的) training did 11 on the test compared to the one that had had mixed training and trained in new areas—in fact, the group that had 12 their training method did twice as well as the group that had repeated the original training. 

So how does that work? The researchers believe it's due to something called reconsolidation(重新合并), which is a process: 13 are recalled and changed with new knowledge. "Our results are important 14 little was known before about how reconsolidation works in relation to skill development. This shows simple training method changes can 15 more rapid and better skill gains, " said Celnik. 

①Many people travel to varied places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree? 

②To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don't want to lose customers. 

③However, according to scientific research, a part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude (海拔) we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure reduces one third of the sensibility (感觉) of our taste buds(味蕾). So our taste buds become senseless. The sad face, however, is that our noses don't know it.

④All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. ____ Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.

⑤Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.

⑥Though scientists try their best, it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can't deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them. 

The train started moving. It was packed with people of all ages. Most of them were working men and women and young college boys and girls. Near the window sat an old man with his son, who looked about thirty years old. 

As the train moved, the son was filled with joy because he was very excited at the scenery(景色) outside. He said in a high voice, " See Dad, the green trees and the scenery are very beautiful!" It made the other people feel very strange. Everyone started talking in a low voice about the old man's son. Suddenly, it started raining. Raindrops fell on the travelers through the opened window. 

Seeing the rain, the old man's son said happily, " See Dad, how beautiful the rain is!" Hearing these words, a young lady became angry with the man, as the raindrops were dropping on her new clothes. She couldn't help shouting at the noisy son and his father. 

" Can't you see it is raining? You ! Old man! If your son is not feeling well, get him to a mental hospital (精神病院) quickly and please don't disturb(干扰) us any more!" The old man's face turned slightly red and then in a low voice, he replied, " We are on the way back from hospital. He was blind at birth. Only last week he can see again. The rain and the nature are new to him. Please forgive him. " All the other people became quiet. 

①Scientists found that plants can make sounds. 

②A scientist Lily Hadany and her team recorded(录制)tomato plants at different times. It showed that the plants made ultrasound(超声波). Humans could only hear them with the help of a computer. 

③As the scientists studied the sounds, they began to find some interesting facts. Plants made different sounds at different times. They hardly made sounds when they had enough water, but as the earth got drier, they made more sounds. Scientists also found that plants made sounds when they got hurt. When scientists cut a part of stem from the plants, the plants also made sounds. But the sounds weren't the same as when the plants needed water. 

④Some scientists trained a computer AI system to identify(识别) the different kinds of sounds. It could find the difference between plants that needed water and plants with cuts. It means that one day we may use these sounds to find out what problem it is having. That could be very helpful to farmers.
