"Doctor Johnson, I don't want to eat now, that's because nothing has a taste for me. It's been like this for long. In fact, I didn't have a delicious meal after I caught a terrible cold last month, What can I do?"

    "Here are some medicine, Mrs. Harris. Take three pills three times a day for seven days and come back and see me. But remember, don't eat anything during the week, or you can just drink some water."

    Next week an upset Mrs. Harris came into Dr. Johnson's office. "Doctor! I'm doing it just as you told me, but delicious food is still tasteless for me. I don't know what was in those pills, but the problem is worse! What do you have to say for yourself?"

    "But when and how do you take these pills?" asked the doctor.

    "At first, I took these pills three times a day, just before dinner," continued the woman, "but these pills are too bitter (苦). So I had to take these pills after three meals."

    "Calm down, Mrs. Harris," said the doctor soothingly. "Now that we've fixed your taste problem, It's OK now, we'll work on your hearing!"

Duc-Hwan wasn't excited about going to the swim team's awards ceremony(颁奖典礼).

"I don't see why we have to be here, Dad,"he said. "It's not like I'm receiving an award.     ▲    "

"Not true,"said Dad. "You won third place at the last sports meeting."

"I can't imagine joining the team next year," Duc-Hwan said as he had his lunch.

"Hey, Duc-Hwan!" It was Coach Andy."Hurry up and finish eating. It's time for the awards."

"Yeah, Coach, okay," said Duc-Hwan, trying to sound as if he didn't care.

"You're part of the Dolphins Swim Team, and we're about to begin."

Duc-Hwan clapped (鼓掌) every time a teammate got an award. The ceremony seemed so long. Suddenly, Dad pushed Duc-Hwan's knee. "Coach just called your name."

Duc-Hwan looked around. Everyone was looking at him. "Are you going to come up here?"asked the coach. Duc-Hwan rose slowly and made his way to Coach Andy. "Duc-Hwan, this is the only award decided by a team vote(投票). I think it's the most important award. You showed your resolve (决心). Even when you came in last, you never gave up. I hope you'll join the team next year."

Duc-Hwan looked at the crowd quickly. Everyone was standing and clapping. Duc-Hwan smiled.

Mary is a fourteen-year-old girl.She is a student in No.2 Middle School.She doesn't have good looks and she is short and heavy.Because of that,she was not happy.

But after going to a place,she now doesn't feel that way.Where did she go?

Last Saturday,Mary went to an old people's home with her mother.She had fun there.An old woman sat in a chair in the hallway.Her slipper(拖鞋)dropped(掉了).

Mary picked it up and said,"Grandma,let me help you put it back on your foot." "Thank you,my girl.You are so beautiful." The old woman said to her.

Then Mary met an old man with no legs,and he said hi to Mary.Mary stopped to talk with him.He told her his stories.And she listened to him.The stories were not funny,but Mary smiled(微笑)all the time."Thanks for your listening,my girl.You are so beautiful." He said to Mary.

They said Mary was beautiful.This made Mary happy.She didn't do any special things in that old people's home,but she got something special.

Katie was waiting for Gulliver's calls. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. "Maybe Gulliver missed the harbour." Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats made pretty pictures, but not the one she wanted most.

Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle's neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull's name, Gulliver, was given by him. The gull's size and his single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie what Gulliver did that first summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone's attention. Young Katie lay in her stroller（婴儿车）on the floating dock（码头） when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie's stroller shake strongly. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and uncle rushed to Katie and stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye at Katie after that. Another summer Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn't watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" The gull's cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things.

This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she'd learned to do. One day, she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather? She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around knees, she closed eyes to hold in the tears. "Kee-aah! Kee-aah!" Katie sat up. "Katie! Katie!" Soon, Dad and Uncle Ralph appeared. "How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks," Uncle Ralph said, "At least …it sounded like him. Strange, he was nowhere in sight." Katie remembered the feather. "I thought I heard him, too."

Judie's class was studying Chinese culture. One day, her teacher went into the classroom 1 some kites. He told them that kites 2 in China more than 2, 000 years ago. At the end of the class, he said, "The Chinese make kites that mean something important to them. I expect each of you 3 a kite that means something important to you. You will have a 4 understanding of kites than before. "

Judie decided to ask her dad for help as it was 5 first time to make a kite. 

"What do you think of when your see a kite?" her dad asked. 

Judie thought for a moment and 6 , "Butterflies. "

Judie's dad agreed that it would be a good idea to make a butterfly kite. They made a cross with some wood sticks, 7 then Judie painted a butterfly on a piece of white paper. Next they stuck the paper on the cross. Finally they tied a long tail to the bottom. 

The next morning, they took 8 kite to the park and tested it. "Wow!" she cried proudly. "9 high my butterfly flies!"

"Judie, can you tell me 10 butterflies?" asked her dad. 

Judie replied, "To me, butterflies mean beauty and freedom!"
