Canada is the second-largest country in the world, with almost 10 million square kilometres of landmass. Due to (由于) its size, it is divided into four different regions(地区).

    The Atlantic Provinces

Fishing is the old industry in this region. Agricultural crops, such as fruit and potatoes, and forests, which produce paper and lumber(木材), form part of the industry. Traditionally depending on fishing and farming, they are developing other natural resources, such as oil and copper.

    Central Canada

Ontario and Quebec form the industrial and manufacturing (制造业的) heart of Canada. They produce three quarters of Canada's goods. More than half of Canada's population lives in the cities in the southern part of Ontario and Quebec. Most of the people living in Quebec speak French.

    The West Coast

The British Columbia Coast is Canada's western continental coastline (海 岸 线 ). Europeans settled (定 居 ) in British Columbia in the early 1800s. The railroad built by the government in the late 1800s made moving much easier. Thousands of Chinese came to British Columbia during this period to work on the railroad. British Columbia has the most valuable forest industry in Canada.

Salmon (鲑鱼) fishing is not only a popular sport, but also an important part of the industry. Pacific salmon are exported (出口) all over the world.

    The North

The Yukon and the Northwest Territories (领土) cover a third of Canada. This huge region has a very small population. Most of the people are natives. There are several native languages, which are equal (平等的) in status (地位) to English and French. During the Gold Rush at the end of the 1800s, thousands of miners (矿工) came to make their fortune (财富). Mining is still an important industry in this region.

We drink one of the world's most popular drinks—tea—on May 21, International Tea Day. We all know that China is the birthplace of tea 1 . But do you know about the tea cultures of some 2 countries?

Tea was brought to 3 from China in the ninth century. Then in the late 12th century, the Japanese monk(僧侣)Eisai 4 tea to Japan from China again, Eisai wrote a book praising tea as a 5 that was especially good for the heart. The custom(习俗)of tea—drinking later became an important part of Japanese culture. In Japan, 6 tea is an art. People use beautiful tea bowls and 7 the peace and calm of the tea room.

India is one of the largest tea producers in the world. It also learned the art of tea-drinking from China centuries ago. Tea is very 8 in India. In fact, 70 percent of the tea it produces is loved 9 its own people. "Chai" is the Hindi(印地语)word for tea. Traditional Indian chai is a type of 10 tea. But unlike Chinese black tea, chai is 11 together with strong spices such as ginger(姜).

Turkey also has a tea culture. If you ever find 12 in Turkey, one thing you have to do is to enjoy special tea there. Tea was brought to the country 13 China in the nineteenth century. The traditional Turkish tea cup is in the shape of a tulip(郁金香). The tea is 14 served very hot and one has to hold the cup by its lower rim(边沿). Most often, salty or sweet biscuits, 15 "kurabiye", are served along with the tea.

 阅读短文 从下面每题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

①What will you do if you see a cockroaeh(蟑螂) ? Quite a few people are very afraid of it, so they may shout for help or try to kill it. Next time you see it, you may need to think twice before killing it.

②There were cockroaches on the earth long ago, and many people believe that they will still be here long after all the people leave it. Cockroaches are small in size, and they are good at climbing and jumping. A cockroach can live for about a week without a head. These make them great helpers during the search and rescue missions(搜救任务).

③Alper heads up led a scientist team at North Carolina Stage University. "I joined the search and rescue missions in Turkey in 1999, "he said. "One of the most difficult problems was to find where the living people were. We needed to find them in a short time, but there was no useful way to help us at that time. "So Alper and his team had the idea of turning cockroaches into special robots.

④Scientists put a small sensor(传感器) and a smart camera on a cockroach's back. Cockroaches climb everywhere with them, With a sensor and the camera, cockroaches can tell people from other things, and then find where the missing people are. In this way, more people can be saved in time.

⑤All in all, the scientists hope these special cockroach robots will be used for more work over the next five years. "We never thought we would see the day, but here we are!"a scientist said.
