"Life is short, but there is always time enough for courtesy (礼貌);
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
People love being polite. You might have noticed we are always saying"please", "thank you","excuse me", and"sorry".
When making a request, you ask someone to do something for you. ▲, it may not help them in any way.
Sometimes, you might make a request, and that request can be difficult for the other person to do. So it is necessary to make sure that you are being polite when making a request.
To do this, you might include some words such as"can", "could", or"please" to soften(使温和) your approach. They may make it look like you are asking a question instead of making a request. However, don't worry — the listener will understand you.
For example, if you are in a restaurant and say"I want the bill(账单)" to the waiter, your request will be considered very direct. You might use this kind of language if you are angry or have had very bad service. However, if you wish to sound polite, you might consider speaking like this:
"Can I have the bill, please?"
"Could I possibly have the bill, please?"
We can also use polite language to ask for permission(准许). For example, just sitting down next to someone without asking might be considered a bit forward (鲁莽的). If that person is waiting for a friend, you may create an uncomfortable situation. You can ask for permission first. For example:
"Would it be OK if I sat here?"
"Do you mind if I sit here?"
Many people weigh more than they want to. They eat too much or do not exercise enough. They choose unhealthy food, or snacks too often. Weight gain (增加) happens when people eat more food than their bodies use. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Dieting (节食) means taking in less food.
It has been shown that writing down everything you eat and drink—as soon as possible—helps you to lose weight. Writing down what you eat is called keeping a"food diary".
If you write down everything you eat and drink in a day, you might be surprised! It is easy to forget the food you eat while you are reading, working or watching TV. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Each snack might seem small, but they add up.
{#blank#}3{#/blank#}
Food diary: 16 June ★Breakfast: I egg, 2 pieces of bread with butter, green tea ★Mid-morning: 2 biscuits, coffee with milk and sugar ★Lunch: 3 pieces of pizza, I soft drink, I apple ★Mid-afternoon: I banana ★Dinner: noodles with vegetables |
{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Without the diary, you might forget about the biscuits with your coffee, the soft drink at lunch, or the mid-afternoon banana. You might forget having extra pieces of pizza!
Keeping a food diary will also make you aware (意识到) if you are not eating enough different kinds of foods. It will show if you are not eating enough vegetables or fruit, or if you are drinking too many sweet drinks. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}They can help you write down what you eat and you will lose weight faster.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. First, stop! Don't run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket (毯子) around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.
