Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).

    One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

    Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

    The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided（碰撞）with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

    There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精),or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

    “Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

    “Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

    Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"

    The next morning, a hot and sweet discussion about Miss Parson and Halloween spread among us kids.

    I was a mother of four children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always valuable, but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes in the wardrobe. I always tell myself to be brave and strong. I hope all my efforts would be worthwhile, as long as my children can grow up healthily. It was Christmas time. We drove downtown to see the Christmas lights, and enjoyed a special dinner, but the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family, so they all looked forward to the coming of the season of goodwill. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for Christmas.

    The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty -dollar bill and asked them to search for gifts. Then everyone scattered (分散开) with the bill. I sat at a table in a café waiting for my children and enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.

    Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about Christmas, laughing and asking each other about what they had bought. I noted Ginger, my younger daughter had only one small and flat bag with her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars—fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that twenty-dollar bill I had given her? I was so angry. After getting home, I called her into my bedroom and closed the door. I couldn't hold back my anger and shouted at her, "What about the rest of the money? No one would be convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What do you want to do with the rest of the money?"

At Piedmont School, everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since she had witnessed her older brother scoring the winning goal. On the day she joined the team, she felt like she could fly.

Unfortunately, her joy did not last long. She spent most of the matches on the bench. Walking to the car after the last game, Laura's mother asked if she was feeling fine. Laura kept quiet and tried to smile at her mother. Having spent yet another game as a reserve, Laura had not even broken a sweat. Laura also joked that she would have baked in the hot sun if she had played. Her mother assured her that she would have another chance to play. She also cheered Laura on. Laura could only shake her head as she climbed into the seat, back hunched and face down.

A few days later, Laura's mother found she sprawled on the couch, watching music videos on her phone, so she tried asking Laura to watch soccer videos instead. Laura looked at her mother blankly, rolling her eyes. "They won't help me and I can't get better by myself," Laura said. 

Sighing, her mother sank down on the couch. "Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it. What if I film you practicing to help you find ways to improve?"

"But the season's over, Mum. No more practice, remember?" Laura said. Her mother looked at her resolutely and insisted that the best players keep practicing even when the season is over. Laura protested, "But to practice plays, I would need at least one other person to join me! It is difficult to do that alone."

Laura's mother patted her and said, "We'll find that key too, but we have to start somewhere." While Laura's mother was searching her wallet for her gold key, she smiled gently at Laura. She gave Laura an assuring no d before passing her the key. "This key is a reminder for you to be strong and not give up. Let's build something tomorrow." Laura's mother said.

He looked in every room and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood. 

When he came back, his father gave him two bright new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. 

It was freezing and dry outside and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. 

As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children trembling with cold. "I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was cheerfully passing on. The man shook his head, saying nothing. "I wish you a happy New Year," repeated Edward, feeling a little puzzled. The man shook his head again, for he couldn't understand or speak the language. "You do not belong to this country, don't you?" asked Edward. Still the man said nothing, but this time he pointed to his mouth and to his children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these people were in trouble. The family were in great need of help. At that moment, he took out his dollars, looked at them over and over, and finally gave one to the man and the other to his wife. 

How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which meant, "We thank you a thousand times and will remember you in our prayers." 

Without a word, Edward made his way home, delighted.

When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought. 

"My dear boy, I saw you give the money to the poor German family," said the father.

Dora Kellert was the school's spelling bee champion, winner of the reading contest at the public library three summers in a row and the playground grand champion in chess. She was a straight-A student.

Though Dora was talented, she was no good at sports. She could not figure out in which direction to kick the soccer ball. She was no good at baseball or basketball either. It wasn't until last year, when she was eleven years old, that she learned how to ride a bike. And even then she had to use training wheels.

"I'll never be good at sports," she thought one day as she lay on her bed staring at the shelf her father had made to hold her trophies (奖杯). "How I wish I could win something, anything, even marbles (弹珠)."

At the word "marbles," she sat up, "That's it. Maybe I could be good at playing marbles." She jumped out of bed and found a can full of her brother's marbles. "Yes," she thought. "I could play marbles, and marbles is a sport." At that moment she realized that she had only three weeks to practice. The playground championship was coming up. She had a lot to do.

To strengthen her wrists (腕关节), she decided to do twenty push-ups on her fingertips, five at a time. By the end of the first set she was breathing hard. She did one more set and decided that was enough push-ups for the first day. She squeezed (握) a rubber eraser one hundred times, hoping it would strengthen her thumb (大拇指). This seemed to work because the next day her thumb was painful. She could hardly hold a marble in her hand, so Dora rested that day and listened to her brother's tips on how to shoot.

After school the next day she practiced three hours straight. After practice, she squeezed the eraser for an hour. Practice, practice, practice. Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze. Dora got better and even beat her brother for the first time.
