It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived near by because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us Surprise Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for Candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters(怪物)stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cod.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精),or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

“Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

“Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"

Once there was a merchant who had fine silks and rug(s a city on the other side of the desert (毛毯) to sell. He wished to send his goods to Abdul the merchant owned a large caravan(商队)of camels, and he employed many men. For many days, Abdul and his men had been preparing for the journey, because of the boundless desert with hot sand and the grass out of sight for miles. It required many camels to carry the merchant's goods, tents, bottles of water, firewood, bags of rice and some tools.

At last the caravan was ready for the journey. The sun shone steadily, making the sand so hot that no one could walk upon it in the daytime. So Abdul and his men traveled all that night. One man was the pilot. He rode ahead because he knew the stars, and he could guide the caravan by them.

They traveled night after night, resting during the heat of the day. Unfortunately, when the caravan started another evening, the pilot led the way as usual, but after a while, weary with many nights of watching, he fell asleep.

All night long the caravan traveled. At daybreak the pilot awoke and looked at the last star fading in the morning light. "Halt(停下)!" he called." The camels must have turned while I slept. We are at the place from which we started yesterday." Even worse, another man shouted, "The man with the camel carrying the rest water and firewood, who is walking at the end of our group, is gone!"

There was no water to drink. There was no firewood to cook the food. The men lay down with despair, "We are lost!"

 第二节:读后续写,阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One weekend when I was about six years old, my family and I went to Disneyland and had a wonderful day full of excitement. I didn't know that the real excitement didn't begin until that night.

While we were watching the fireworks, I started to get an urge to go to the bathroom, but I didn't want to miss the show. I overheard a conversation between my sister Isabel and my mother, and I approached them to hear what they were saying.

"Mom, I'm going to the bathroom with Lizette, okay?" said Isabel.

"Okay," my mom replied, "but stay together. I don't want any of you to get lost."

The second I saw my sisters leaving, I didn't think twice before running after them — without telling my parents. As I followed them through the huge crowd of people, I started to lose sight of them. I began to panic as I scanned the crowd for them. Crazy thoughts ran through my head like "What if I never see my family again?"

I gave up trying to find my sisters and tried to get back to my family, but I was completely mixed up. After searching for what seemed like forever, I couldn't hold back my tears, and I started crying like I had never cried before.

"Mommy!" I cried out. But everyone around me was too caught up by the fireworks to pay any attention to me.

I tried to stop the scary thoughts that were going through my head and started running as fast as I could ... anywhere ... every where. I was going crazy. "I'm only six, and I've gotten lost. What have I done? How could I have been so dumb to run off without telling anyone?" I thought.

With my face wet from tears, I kept running, pulling at people's pants and crying, "Mommy!" I was hoping that one of these adults would be one of my parents.
