I was ten years old when my mother died. Ten years old on that very day, my mother organized a party for me at the hospital. She made sure everyone there brought me presents. 

Nurse Ms. Louise gave me a fountain pen. "Now you can write beautiful stories, Katie," She said. Then the twins in the same room gave me a pink diary. A little too cute for me. I mean, I read Stephen King, the novelist and wanted to write like him. There was one box they held out till the end. It was a large box, carefully wrapped (包裹) with exquisite paper and ribbons. "Who's it from?" I asked. 

"It's you," Mama mouthed, hard breathing, but she smiled a very small smile at me. I read her lips. She meant it was a present for me. 

"Of course, it is," I said happily. 

I took off the paper carefully. It was a beautiful box made of heavy cardboard. Then I opened it slowly and...

"It's empty," I said. "Is this a joke?" I turned to ask Mama, but she was gone, no breath. 

"Mama!" I cried. I screamed. 

I cried steadily for a week at night, and for about a year, I stopped writing and reading. I felt empty and angry. 

One night, I woke up remembering how she had said, "It's you." Not, "It's for you," just "It's you." Mama had been a writer herself. She didn't use words carelessly. But, why? 

I took the box out and opened it. It was as empty as the day I had put it away. 

 "It's you," I whispered to the box. Suddenly I knew. 

I was the box, solid and strong, maybe even beautiful on the outside. But I had to fill up the box to make it all it could be. I had to fill me up as well. 

Then ____. The first thing I put on paper was about that birthday. I kept it in the box, and pretty soon that box was overflowing with stories. And poems. And memories. 

And so was I.

A group of boys stand around a tree. "1 tall tree!" they say to each other. "It will be exciting to climb to the top."

The boys then decide to play a game to see who 2 climb to the top of the tree first. One of the climbers is 3 8-year-old boy named David. He is 4 child in the group. Nobody thinks he will win.

Then the game starts. All of the boys try their best to climb as 5 as they can. Though the other boys climb faster than David 6 the beginning, he gets to the top of the tree fastest in the end.

His mother is proud. She asks him, "David, 7 do you reach the top of the tree so quickly?"

"It is easy," David says. "8 children keep looking down as they climb. When they realize how high they are, they are afraid of falling down. However, I only look up. When I see how close I am to the top, I keep going higher and higher until I 9 the top."

It is true in life that if we just keep going forward without 10 back, we are more likely to reach our goals.

Kevin and Chloe's anniversary(纪念日) is on16th May. Kevin doesn't know how to 1 it. 

After thinking it over, Kevin 2 to have a nice dinner at an Italian restaurant. He calls the only two Italian restaurants in town to book(预订) a table, 3 there are no tables available(可用的) on that day. 

Kevin knows that Italian food is Chloe's favourite. Having Italian food is the best way to make 4 happy. Now there are no tables available. 5 can he do?

Suddenly, Kevin has a(n)6 . What if he cooks Chloe an Italian meal?

He is sure that Chloe will be 7 . But there is one 8 — Kevin isn't a 9 cook. Then Kevin thinks he can go to an Italian restaurant and take the food home. 

The big day comes. Chloe is 10 work when Kevin orders the food and brings it back. As he puts the food on the table and puts the music on, Chloe 11 . 

Kevin 12 her the dinner. "Happy Anniversary!"

Chloe looks at Kevin. " Do you know what 13 it is today, Kevin? Our anniversary is tomorrow. "

"What? Is it 14 May today?" Kevin thinks. He looks at the calendar(日历). It turns out that Chloe is 15 . He looks back at her. "Well, I guess it's always good to practise. "

How much do you know about whales(鲸), a kind of fantastic sea animals? Now we are 1  an ocean park and learning much about them. 

We know whales 2  in the sea. Are they fish? A worker in the ocean park gives us the 3 , " Whales live in the sea and look like fish, but they aren't fish. "

We all get a 4  when we see such big whales. However, how big are they really? Another worker 5  us, " Blue whales are the biggest of all kinds of whales. They are 6  one of the biggest animals on earth. Most of them are more than 30 metres long and each of them is 7  enough to be about 130 tons(吨). "

We also learn about some interesting facts about whales. Whales 8  on sea life. Some eat seals and fish and some eat sea plants. Some whales like the blue whales don't have 9  and just swallow(吞下) food, but some can eat food with their teeth. And whales can't take in air under the sea 10 , so they need to jump out of water often. 

Are whales in danger? For some whales, landing(上岸) on beaches accidentally(意外地) is 11 . Beaches are not safe 12  for them. They need to stay in the 13 . Maybe they will lose their lives if they don't get back to the sea in time. Some kinds of whales are in danger14  people catch them for meat, fat and oil. To protect whales, people 15  stop killing them and polluting(污染) the ocean. 

Our visiting has taught us a lot about our fantastic friends—whales.
