About 470 pilot whales have been beached in Tasmania in Australia.This has been the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} （large） whale﹣beaching event in Tasmania since 1935.People are working hard{#blank#}2{#/blank#}（save） the whales.Every year，around 2，000 large sea animals，such as dolphins and whales，die by {#blank#}3{#/blank#} （swim） onto a beach or into water that's too shallow for {#blank#}4{#/blank#} （they） to swim away.This {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（know） as "beaching".Pilot whales and killer whales are some of the most commonly beached whales.Rescue workers are trying to "refloat" the whales so they can swim away.The job is especially challenging {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the whales are so large.Pilot whales can grow up to 7 meters {#blank#}7{#/blank#} （length） and can weigh up to 2，300 kg.Since the rescued whales will return to the place again{#blank#}8{#/blank#} others are still in trouble，workers are trying to make sure that rescued whales don't get beached again.Dr.Carlyon from the rescue team says the cool，wet weather has helped keep the whales {#blank#}9{#/blank#} （live）.About 90 whales {#blank#}10{#/blank#} （die） so far.Rescue efforts are likely to continue for a few more days.

I'm Timo Halla. I1 with my parents in Helsinki， Finland. I'm happy every day. Now, it's December. Every Tuesday, I usually get up at 7:40. 1 often listen to the news2 music. My mum always cooks for me. After 3 , I walk to school. And it only takes me 10 4 .

My school begins at 9:00.There are 18 5 in my class. Each lesson is 45 minutes. Between lessons we have a 6 , and we can do other things with our friends. We have three7 in the morning-one Finnish lesson and two home economics lessons. The afternoon lessons begin at 12:30 and8 at2:15. Then I go to my ice hockey club.

I usually get home around 4:00. It is already9 outside. All the lights are on. I often have dinner at6: 00. Then, I read with my parents for an hour. After that, I 10 my school things for the next day. At 9:30, it's time for me to go to bed.

I love studying in London and I have many new friends. Most of them are my classmates. From Monday to Friday，we have English，math，physics and P. E. in the morning. I like English and physics，because they're interesting. I don't like math. It's too boring. At noon，I have to have lunch at school because my home is far from（远离）my school. We usually have two classes in the afternoon﹣art and politics. We finish our classes at 3 ：30 p. m. After school，my friends and I always play football on the playground. And then we go home by bus.

① The 24th Winter Olympic Games took place in Beijing, but the city was no stranger to competitive (竞技性的) sports on snow and ice. 

② In fact, competitive winter sports were already popular in China a thousand years ago in the form of bingxi(playing on ice). Bingxi began in the Song Dynasty and became really popular during the Qing Dynasty. Emperor (皇帝) Qianlong hosted bingxi nearly every year. He had the first one in 1742, almost two hundred years before the first Winter Olympic Games. 

③ Many ancient painters painted pictures about the events of bingxi. Bingxi paintings show scenes (场景) of bingxi during the Qing Dynasty. 

④ In bingxi, there are three kinds of ice skating. The first one is the speed race which is similar to modern speed skating. Participants (参赛者) skate to the emperor's ice bed, from two to three kilometres away. In the painting, the emperor sits inside his ice bed. Whoever reaches the emperor first wins first prize. The second is figure skating. Jumps, spins (旋转) and pair work moves in modern figure skating can all be found in the painting. The third is soccer on ice. Participants in two teams skate, kick and try to score goals. 

⑤ The love for winter sports never diminished in China. People in the past showed great interest in winter sports and today more and more people take part in this kind of sport.

If you've been studying for a while, you'll notice that there is more than one type of "English". The website, Big Seven Travel, made a list of the world's 50 most attractive accents(口音), and many different kinds of English made the list. 

The main reasons that affect the way people speak a language are geography — where they are in the world, and society — the way their communities speak. As a result, English has many differences in vocabulary and slang(俚语). 

Located in two different places, the US and the UK provide great examples. They often have different words for the same things. The US people call the back part of a car, used for carrying big and heavy things or suitcases, the"trunk", but in the UK, people call it the"boot". In the US, the word"boot" means a wheel clamp(车轮夹锁) that police put on a car. 

Slang also causes confusion (困惑). The US slang is hugely different thanks to many kinds of people who have moved to the country. African- American slang is especially confusing for foreign language learners. It uses its own grammar. For example, "a person who is awake to reality" would be called"a woke person". Southern American slang also can be confusing. "I'm fixing to fix it" means"I'm getting ready to fix it". Australian slang, meanwhile, is all about abbreviations(缩写词). They say"sanga" for"sandwich", "brekkie" for"breakfast", and"arvo" for"afternoon". It can make you wonder if either of these countries is actually speaking English. 

English writer Virginia Woolf once wrote, "Language is wine upon the lips. " The next time you're speaking English with someone, check the accent on the bottle!
