When you open a map on your phone, you might think it is guided by the Global Positioning System (GPS) without giving it a second thought. However, today, most of the online maps in China uses the Beidou Navigation Satellite System(BDS，北斗卫星导航系统).

China started to build the BDS 30 years ago. Back in 1978, the US already started providing navigation services with its GPS. However, depending on a navigation system from another country is not safe.

In 2020, after over 20 years of hard work, Beidou completed its global network. The BDS became the fourth global navigation system after the GPS of the United States, Galileo of the European Union and GLONASS of Russia.

The BDS is the first navigation satellite system to provide a global short message communication service. It means you can text others in places without phone signal or internet. For example, in February 2023, a hiker got lost in heavy snow in Inner Mongolia. He sent a text message using the BDS-powered chip in his phone and got saved in time.

Besides, the Beidou system plays an important role in disaster prevention and response(灾害预防和响应). Rescuers(救援人员) can communicate through the BDS quickly and clearly.

No matter where you are in the world, the BDS can help guide your way. By 2023, it had provided service for over 120 countries. "By 2035, China will build a positioning, navigation and timing system with the BDS at its main aim to provide more smart services," Ran Chengqi, director of the China Satellite Navigation Office, said at a news meeting in 2018.

Young people and older people don't always agree with each other. They sometimes have different {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(看法) about living, working and having fun. But last month in one special program in New York, adults and teenagers lived together and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (影响) each other in a friendly way.

Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as a group. Everyone works for several hours each day. Lots of vegetables and fruit are {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（种植） on the farms, i{#blank#}4{#/blank#}carrots, tomatoes and apples. Teenagers learn to{#blank#}5{#/blank#}（修理）things like tables and chairs with the help of the adults. 

When people live together, rules are always{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (必要的). In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. Also, they make a {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（协议）to decide everything together. If someone breaks a rule, the whole group will discuss the problem. Sometimes, adults are w{#blank#}8{#/blank#}than teenagers in solving problems, but teenagers have quicker mind.

One of the teenagers says about the experience, "We don't only think about o{#blank#}9{#/blank#}. We learn to think about the{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(整个的）group."

 Cici is standing a few steps ahead - her- trainer. Her trainer says," Right." Cici makes a 90- degree turn." Forward." Cici walks toward the、 sidewalk and starts to walk down it. Cici is training to be a guide dog. Guide dogs help people who are blind or disabled.

 But, how do trainers make sure their dogs are right for the work? Jim Alloway is a leader of Pilot- Dogs in Columbus. Before starting to train the puppies(小狗), he and his team test qualities that trainers can't teach. In one test, trainers drop a box on the floor near the puppies. Do they ignore(忽视) the noise? Do they run away? Do they jump, and then look around? Puppies that ignore the noise or run away are not considered good choices. Other tests answer questions like: Is the dog confident? Is the dog safe for their owners? Is the dog happy as a guide dog? More than half of all dogs tested fail. They end up doing some other service work or become family pets.

 Once a puppy passes the tests, trainers begin teaching the dog basic commands(命令) like" come" and" sit". It is not easy. Puppies are still babies. They don't always follow the rules. It takes months of patient practice to teach a puppy to obey a command. Trainers usually motivate dogs in a positive way. When the dog does something correctly, it gets a treat(奖励).

 As the puppies get older, they practice in an indoor facility that has stairs to climb and obstacles(障碍) to go around. After that, trainers add distractions(干扰). They throw toys and make loud noises. This trains the dogs to notice the distractions, and then ignore them if they are not dangerous.

 After practicing inside, trainers take the dogs outside. They learn how to cross streets safely and how to get onto buses. They learn to keep away from common dangers, like steps on the ground, and running cars.

 It can take up to two years for a puppy to become a guide dog. But once it starts to work, it will be the best helpers for its human partners.

When we talk about safaris (游猎), we usually think of excited tourists watching wild animals living freely in Africa. But did you know that in the beginning safaris had little to do with observing wildlife in its natural living areas?

The word safari comes from an Arabic word for "journey", and the earliest safaris were journeys to do trade, hundreds of years ago. These journeys through Africa were often difficult and dangerous, but people from different parts of the world were able to see the unbelievable wildlife there. Eventually (最终) people started to hunt or to study the wildlife, rather than to do trade. Today, most safaris are trips for holidaymakers who want to see animals such as zebras, giraffes, lions and elephants in their natural homes. Some countries also have safari parks-huge parks where the same animals live almost freely, and visitors drive through to see them from inside their cars.

Everyone knows that thousands of animals die out every year, and a lot of people believe that safaris and safari parks have an important role to play in the fight to protect some of the planet's best-known species (物种). Safari parks, like zoos, are places where animals can live safely, and receive food and medical treatment. But unlike zoos, the animals live in almost natural conditions. Real safaris help to protect animal living areas, as they not only bring in money but also help to educate people. Tourists on safari take photos and videos, which they share with their friends and family, and online, spreading the word about the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it.

Not every side of safari tourism is positive (乐观), however. It's very expensive, and very few people can actually afford to experience it. Safari tourists travel in jeeps, trucks and tour buses, which cause pollution, and some tourists leave rubbish. Some people believe safaris could destroy the very places that they are supposed to protect.

As safaris become more popular, it is important that the people who organize and join in them do so responsibly. They must do their best to make sure that these trips into the natural world really are for the benefit of Mother Nature, and not to her disadvantage.
