Would you BET on the future of this man? He is 53 years old. Most of his adult life has been a losing struggle against debt and misfortune. A war injury has made his left hand stop functioning, and he has often been in prison. Driven by heaven-knows-what motives, he determines to write a book.

The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than 350 years. That former prisoner was Cervantes (塞万提斯), and the book was Don Quixote (《堂吉诃德》). And the story brings an interesting question: why do some people find new energy and creativity to the end of their days, but others go to seed long before?

We've all known people who run out of steam before they reach life's halfway mark. I'm not talking about those who fail to get to the top. We can't all get there. I'm talking about people who have stopped learning on growing because they have taken in the fixed attitudes and opinions that all too often come with passing years.

Most of us, in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of specialization and then become trapped in it. Nothing surprises us. We lose our sense of wonder. But, if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere.

The things we learn in maturity (成熟) seldom involve information and skills. We learn to bear with the things we can't change. We learn to avoid self-pity. We learn that however much we try to please, some people are never going to love us-an idea that troubles at first but is eventually relaxing.

With high motivation and enthusiasm, we can keep on learning. Then we will know how important it is to have meaning in our life. However, we can achieve meaning only if we have made a commitment to something

larger than our own little egos (自我) , whether to loved ones, to fellow humans, to work, or to some moral concept.

Many of us regard "commitment" with such "caring" jobs as teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable commitment. People who work toward such excellence whether they are driving a truck or running a store make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They've learned life's most valuable lesson.

Don't let your kids drag their feet (拖拖拉拉) over doing chores. Help them to make the boring chores enjoyable.

    ▲    A simple and great way to make cleaning great fun is to do some of it together. Play some beautiful music while you are doing chores. Then you won't feel bored.

Get lucky. If your kids like surprises, write chores on ice-cream and have each kid pick one. Tell them they can change their picks if each of them agrees. In this way, they will have a feeling that they're making a choice (选择).

Make it playtime. Turn "kitchen time" into a party. Let one child be a cook and another be a DJ. The cook chooses what he or she would like to help make for dinner. The DJ chooses the music he or she would like to play. Everyone can dance around the kitchen while preparing dinner or cleaning up the kitchen later.

Find more difficult chores. One of my friends was trying to get her kids to help out around the house, and someone advised her to give the kids some things like candies or toys as rewards. The plan worked like magic. However, rewards usually don't work for long because kids will be bored with doing the same chores all the time. At this time, give them some difficult chores. If they're already used to helping clean the cage of the pet, make it harder by having them clean it all by themselves. Then, ask them to clean it faster.

Everyone has problems. When you meet something difficult, who can you ask for advice? These people may be your classmates, parents, teachers, long-lost friends or even a real stranger. They will make your life different in some ways. What they did or said may teach you a lesson or help you recognize（认识）who you are. For example, your best friend doesn't trust you anymore. You will feel terrible and unfair at that time. But later you will find out the reasons and try your best to solve the problem. Then you will know that everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck. So the people around you and the successes and failures you have experienced will help you recognize who you are. In fact, the bad experiences are the most profound and important ones. 

Please enjoy every day even every moment and learn from it because you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people you have never talked to before, and listen to them. You should set your sights high, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself. Then you will have a bright future.

Avoid judgment. Remember, you cannot fully understand what it's like to be inside someone else's head. Therefore, avoid trying to pass judgment on a behavior or a decision. Everyone is different. So, it should not be surprising if another person's choice is different from yours. It's okay to put yourself in someone else's shoes and try to understand their decisions. 

Provide support during bad times.Think about times in your life that were hard. You probably had friends, family members, and other loved ones helping you along the way. If you want to be a decent person, you should provide support in return. When people go through difficult times, put yourself out there and help. 

Let go of anger. If you live with a lot of anger, you're more likely to be unfriendly to others. Becoming a decent person often means letting go of some anger. If you find yourself becoming angry, take physical means to cool down. For example, take a deep breath. Always remember to avoid taking things personally. This will help you away from your anger.

Oceanic islands, located far out in the ocean, are usually the tops of underwater volcano. These volcanic islands are formed when underwater volcanoes crupt(爆发). 

In August 1883, an ocean ic island called Krakatau in Indonesia was blasted apart by volcanic eruptions. It was one of the most violent cruptions in the world. The effects(影响) of this volcanic eruption was both immediate and long-term

In the "immediate" part, two-thirds of the island disappeared buncâth the sea. Pour huge eruptions created tsunamis (huge waves) that rose 120 feet high. More than 30, 000 people drowned in the tsunamis, which caused floods as far away as San Francisco and the English Channel. Tens of thousands of people on ncarby Indonesian islands were killed by walls of water, hot clouds of volcanic ash, gas, and rock.

In the longer term, climate patterns(气候模式) after Krakatoa's eruption influenced the whole world. The huge amounts of as h and gas entered into the sky and caused clouds to throw back more light than normal, cooling the Eorth. The following year, average(平均的) temperatures dropped by as much as 2. 2 degrees Fahrenheit. A few degrees F dropping n. ay not sound like much, but it is a big deal to plants and animals.
