    Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not be returning.

    Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

    Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.

    "I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.

    "I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend?

"I guess I don't know it that well after all, "Anjali said sheepishly to the teacher, Mr. Zakir. Her stomach was doing flip-flops. That wasn't true. Not even a little. Mr. Zakir's eyes narrowed. He looked like he was about to say something, but changed his mind. "The recital （演奏会） is next week, everyone. Keep practicing. I will be announcing who will get to perform onstage with me at my next concert! "Anjali had dreamed of a moment like that. She wanted to win the opportunity, but she needed to sort things straight with Deepak first. 

As the class was dismissed, Anjali hurried over to Deepak. When she finally made eye contact with him, he purposely looked away and walked off. The next day at school, Anjali overheard Deepak whispering to Mary. "People are only interested because she's the only girl in tabla class and they want her to feel special. She's not that good—" Anjali was furious. She excused herself and went to the bathroom. She took some deep breaths but couldn't relax. Her heart was pounding:

"It's not my fault that people make a big deal about a girl playing tabla. I make mistakes too, but I work really hard. Maybe he should too. He should be less mean and practice more."

"If I play in this concert, no one will talk to me again. He will turn everyone against me."

"I don't want to see a tabla or hear a tabla or play a tabla EVER AGAIN! ! Anjali yelled at the mirror. It was quiet for a moment. She believed it was one of her darkest days ever.

On a particular morning, Mrs. Meredith recounted to her offspring—John, Harry, and Clara—about a family she had encountered the previous day. The family was comprised of an indisposed patriarch confined to his bed, his spouse who, burdened with caregiving responsibilities, was unable to seek employment, and their young son. The boy, Bernard, had captured her interest significantly.

She expressed a desire for her children to witness Bernard's situation, highlighting his role as a significant support to his mother and his earnest desire to contribute financially, despite the apparent lack of opportunities.

Once their mother departed, the siblings convened, contemplating Bernard's predicament. Clara voiced her empathy, wishing to facilitate his financial independence, acknowledging the profound hardship endured by his family.

Echoing her sentiments, Harry concurred, emphasizing the necessity of devising a strategy to alleviate their plight.

Initially silent, John eventually rose abruptly, exclaiming his inspiration. He proclaimed the conception of a plan that could be collaboratively executed to aid Bernard.

His siblings, intrigued, eagerly awaited his proposal. John's ideas were renowned for their ingenuity, and he proposed, "Consider the substantial crate of maize that Uncle John bestowed upon us. We could transform it into popcorn, package it in paper sacks, and empower Bernard to distribute and vend it throughout the neighborhood."

The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.

"Ob,I forgot to mention one thing." Ms Sullivan spoke up. "Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write t on a piece of paper."

This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar(嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.

Ms Sullivan calmed everyone down. I'd like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?"

"How can a disabled person be intelligent?" I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.

It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.

"How about you, James?" She asked me. "Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today?"

It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.
