Do you know the Monkey Buffet Festival in Thailand? It is on the last Sunday of November. It is a great day for monkeys in Thailand. The festival has a history of 35years. People there think monkeys can bring good luck to them. So, to thank monkeys, they have this special festival. 

On that day every year, people put lots of fruit, vegetables, cakes and even drinks on the tables outside. They are all for monkeys. Many people come to see the monkeys on that day. 

During the festival, there are a lot of interesting activities about monkeys. Young people always dress like monkeys and they sing and dance and play some music on the street. 

Monkeys always live in groups. Most of them live in the trees. They are good at running and jumping. They eat fruit, vegetables, plants and birds' eggs. Monkeys are clever. Do you think so?

Korean Vacation

Last Monday, Soobin got a surprise text message from Klara. She is Soobin's German online friend. She was visiting Seoul（首尔）with her family!

Soobin replied. Soobin waited for Klara's reply and thought of things to do. 

Soobin was a little disappointed. She was also thinking of folk villages and pansori. Klara texted again. 

Soobin smiled. She was about to suggest Insadong. The class was fun. 

At lunch, Soobin suggested a bulgogi restaurant. 

"I'll introduce you to Korean food!"

"Thanks, but we already have plans to eat Buddhist（佛教）temple（寺）food," Klara said. "And we have bulgogi restaurants at home. "

Soobin laughed. "I guess they're introducing themselves to Korean culture," she thought. 

Like visible light, UV rays are energy waves released by the sun, only they cannot been seen. Some exposure (暴露) to    those waves can do a body good. For example, ultraviolet B (UV-B) rays tell human skin to make vitamin D. Too much exposure can be harmful, though. Overexposure to UV rays can cause DNA problems, opening the door for skin cancer. 

Too much sun can also cause painful sunburns. 

There are three different types of UV energy waves. They are UV-A, UV-B and UV-C rays. Each type moves at a different wavelength, with UV-A's being the longest. Rays of UV-C are considered especially harmful to human beings. 

Fortunately, we have the ozone (臭氧) layer of the Earth's atmosphere. It blocks out nearly all of the UV-C rays and most of the UV-B ones. 

The moon doesn't have much of an atmosphere, though. Back on the moon, things are more dangerous. Over the years, astronauts have planted six American flags on the moon. Some scientists think that powerful UV rays could have bleached all the colorful flags white by now. For this reason, the moon is a dangerous place to visit without protection. You might think that astronauts who visit the moon would come home with terrible sunburns. That didn'thappen to

Armstrong and his company. Neil Armstrong was a U. S. astronaut and the first person to walk on the moon. These astronauts all wore special spacesuits on their missions. Spacesuits were made with heavy fabrics that block out UV rays. 

When Armstrong set foot on the lunar surface, he was wearing a see-through helmet (头盔) with sun shades that were made of ultraviolet-stabilized polycarbonate. It is a very tough plastic that protects astronauts' faces from UV rays. A

weaker material could put the space travelers at risk for "snow blindness" and other problems. Conditions like these arise when UV rays damage parts of the human eyes. 

Sunscreen (防晒霜) defends us from the UV rays that do pass through the ozone layer. However, there's really no need for an astronaut to put on sunscreen. The risk of sunburn goes way down when astronauts are inside a spaceship. Inside

the International Space Station (ISS), for example, there is no need for special suits. Astronauts regularly do their work in nothing but common cotton shirts and pants. To protect them from sunburns, the ISS uses UV-blocking windows. So do most space exploration ships. 

Do you know a special kind of forest in China? We call it" the mangrove(红树林)" or" the red forest". Are the mangroves red? No, mangroves don't have red leaves. They are green.

 Mangroves grow in the water on the coast. The place of mangrove planting in China is between 20°-30°N and 105°-120°E. Some parts of the trees are out of the water. They are home to reptiles like snakes. The other parts in the water make great homes for baby sea animals, like baby fish.

 Mangroves can grow as high as 10 meters. They keep the land away from strong winds and waves(海浪). Like other trees, mangroves take in CO₂ to make O₂. They are helping to make air clean on earth. But now many mangroves are in danger. We need to do more.

 Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic bags. More and more businesses are changing to paper products. Using paper is thought to be better than plastic.

However, it is harmful to the environment, too.

 Firstly, paper bags are made from trees. Trees, as you know, are good for the environment. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation(毁林).

 Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.

 Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.

 So, paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.

 In my opinion, the most environment-friendly way is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
