Most people love animals. Many children's books use animals as the main characters（角色）. Many people look after animals as pets. Do you know {#blank#}1{#/blank#} people enjoy going to zoos? The love for animals may {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the reason.

In the past, zoos were usually started by rich（富有的） people. The {#blank#}3{#/blank#} zoo was started by a queen（王后）in Egypt in 1500 BC．Sadly, the animals in the early zoos were not treated well. They didn't receive（收到）{#blank#}4{#/blank#}attention or care.

Today, zoos still bring people pleasure, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} they try to protect animals and teach people as well. Zoos must follow rules. People must provide animals {#blank#}6{#/blank#} a clean place to live, food and water, and health care. In this way, the rules help protect the animals.

Some people think the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} are not enough. They want to do more to protect the animals they love. For example, people were against the use of some large animals in shows. They thought the zoos didn't have enough {#blank#}8{#/blank#} for the animals to show. With so many people against the shows, the zoos {#blank#}9{#/blank#} to make a change.

People see animals in zoos. At the same time, they try to learn about and protect {#blank#}10{#/blank#}. Both people and animals can get a lot from each other.

Mr. Dawson was an old man with a bad temper. Kids were afraid to go into his yard to pick apples. 

One day, 12-year-old Janet and her friend Amy had to walk past Mr. Dawson's house. When Janet saw him, she suggested crossing the street to the other side. But Amy said they needn't. 

When Mr. Dawson saw Amy, he smiled and said, "Hello, Amy! I see you have a new friend with you today." Amy smiled back. Mr. Dawson looked friendly and gave them each a fresh apple. 

Later Janet asked Amy, "Everyone says he is the most unwelcome person in town. Why was he so kind to us?" Amy explained that when she first walked past his house, she was also afraid of him. But she imagined there was an invisible smile on his face and then started talking to him. Beginning with a "hello" at first, and then speaking more each time. 

"An invisible smile?" Janet was puzzled. "Yes," answered Amy, "My grandma told me to think so. She says smiles can spread. If we keep smiling at someone, sooner or later they will smile back."

Remember what Amy's grandma said, and we will find that most people can't refuse our smile.

In China, each year we produce about 150 million tons of city waste according to a report. Where does the waste go? People usually burn or bury (埋) it. On the other hand, we receive waste from some developed countries. We get useful materials from it. What about the useless part? Still burned or buried. But is it a proper way?

Waste pollutes the environment, harms people's health and causes animals to die. It also gets in the way of green and sustainable development. We can't make money at the cost of the environment; we should leave clean water and green mountains to our next generation (一代). 

China is getting really serious about waste now. 

We are taking less waste from developed countries. From January 2018, China started to stop 24 kinds of waste coming into our country. And more laws and rules about dealing with waste have been made. Anyone who breaks the law will be punished. 

China also tries to put waste into good use. One example is the waste electricity factories. They burn waste to make electricity in a green way. No harmful gases (气) or water will get into the environment. 

The Chinese government is encouraging people to do waste sorting (分类). Cities like Shanghai, Chongqing and Beijing have their own sorting systems. More will join them soon. As President Xi Jinping said during a visit to Shanghai, waste sorting is a new fashion. More and more people are forming the habit of separating their waste.

Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe is born 10 feet high and usually lands on its back. Within seconds it rolls over its legs under its body. Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its children to the reality(现实)of life. 

In his book, A View from the Zoo, Gary Richmond describes how a new-born giraffe learns its first lesson. 

The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she puts herself directly over her child. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She throws her long leg and kicks her baby, so that it's sent sprawling(四脚朝天). 

When it doesn't get up, the process is repeated again and again. The struggle to rise is important. As the baby giraffe grows tired, the mother kicks it again. Finally, it stands for the first time on its shaky legs. Then the mother giraffe kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it gets up. In the wild, a baby giraffe must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with its group, where there's safety. 

Another writer named Irving Stone understood this. He spent a lifetime studying greatness, writing stories about such men as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin. 

Stone was once asked if he had found something that runs through the lives of all these great people. He said, "I write about people who sometime in their life have a dream of something. They're beaten over the head, knocked down and for years they get nowhere. But every time they stand up again. And at the end of their lives, they've realized some small parts of what they set out to do. "

As a part of history, bamboo is very important. The great scientist Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb (灯泡), but he made it perfect. He wanted the material inside to bum for a long period of time. He tried over 1,000 different types of materials. However, none worked very well. One day, he tried to use a piece of bamboo and the light bulb lit up for over a thousand hours. This invention helped other scientists to make the modern light bulb we use today.
