Now I have two good friends in my class. They are Wang Tao and Fang Fang. Wang Tao is a boy and Fang Fang is a girl. Wang Tao is thirteen. We are of the same age. Fang Fang is twelve. Wang Tao is tall. We often play basketball after school. He is good at it. His favorite teacher is Mr Hu, the PE teacher. Fang Fang likes music, and she likes Miss Gao best. What about me? I like Chinese very much, and I want to learn it well. My Chinese teacher, Mr Li often helps me. I like him best. Wang Tao and Fang Fang often help me with my Chinese, too.

Watermelons, once the fruit of only royal (皇家的)families, are now on the table of common people. And they are many people's favorite fruit. 

Liu Wanlin lives in Xining, Qinghai. She describes watermelons as the "fruit of the people". "They are not like expensive durians(榴莲). They are cheap and common people can buy enough of them, "she said. 

Liu grew up in the countryside of the dry Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (青藏高原). The weather there is not good for the planting of watermelons. "I never tasted watermelons as a child, "she said. "But freedom of watermelons'is now not a dream anymore in my place. "People in her place can have as many watermelons as they wish. They get the fruit mainly from Gansu, Shaanxi, and Xinjiang. 

Song Shaozhe works in a restaurant in Wuhan, Hubei. He says that watermelons are really common at many restaurants as the after-meal fruit, because they are cheap. 

However, the "freedom of watermelons"didn't come easy. These years, scientists try hard to improve watermelon breeding ( 育 种 ) . Watermelons become abundant. The large number of watermelons makes them cheaper. Also, thanks to the development of farming techniques(技术), it is

possible for people to enjoy the fruit all year around. 

China has a rich and colorful cultural history，and masks have played a major role in Chinese tradition in thousands of years. Why do people wear masks？The reasons are to protect their body，to hide themselves，masks are used all over the world. 

African masks are usually made by a traditional style. There are many different kinds of African masks，but many of them represent animals. African masks are a part of full—body costumes and they are made for dancers. The dancers usually wear the masks in religious events. 

Japanese masks have been used in many different performances such as dance，theater，festivals or religious events. They represent heroes，devils，ghosts，cloth，wood，or some paper. 

Greek masks are used to represent the spirits of nature during religious events. Also，theater actors use masks to show different characters. In Rome，devil and other masks are used in carnivals（节日）. 

Today，masks continue to be of great artistic entertaining value. 

At the corner of Jan Smuts Street in Durban, six women meet every day, waiting for a truck to come and get the cardboard (纸板) they have collected.

Every morning Chitha leaves her house at 5 a. m. to collect cardboard. She has been doing this for the past 12 years. She says her dream is to see her children go to college. Then she found this job.

" It's dirty and people look down on us. We only make about R3, 400 a month. However, this is a ticket for us to send our children to college." Chitha said with a big smile. She added that she found great joy knowing her daughter is in college.

" We have a slogan(口号) —— Keep on going and never give up." Chitha continued." We don't just sit here waiting for the truck to come. We also talk about life, give advice about problems and help each other. We are a family here."

" We are all single mothers and have to make money to raise our children. I'm collecting this dirty cardboard for my three children to have a brighter future. I will continue until the last one also goes to college."

Chitha's daughter Naledi is now in her second year at a college. She said with tears in her eyes," Mom is doing all she can to survive (生存). I admire her for that."
