Once again, God seems to have put a homeless person in my path. Lately, I have regularly come into contact with people that I just can't ignore .

His name is Mark and I was surprised to hear that he is only three years older than me. He looks so much older! He was on the counter, asking for money. I parked my car and plonked(砰地放下) myself down on the curb(路边) to talk. People were driving by and looking at us, but I didn't care.

He told me about his life. How much of his story I believe, I don't know. He told me he was dying—-that part I believe, for he could hardly walk and had trouble catching his breath.

I asked what I could do to help him. He said all he wanted was a slice of pizza. I gave him $3, the only cash I had . He said he wanted to go to get the food himself, but he was stopped from the shopping center for begging. I said I would get it for him and asked if he wanted something to drink .

Then he asked for a(n) ride to the trail in the woods where he had his tent. Usually I don't give rides to strangers, but this was just up the street, and quite honestly he had no physical threat to me. When we parted, he held my hand for a long time and we just looked at each other wordlessly for a few moments.

At that time, he wasn't a homeless man and I wasn't a sufferer .We became just two souls making a human connection I don't know if I will ever see him again, but I know I will never forget him. God bless you, Mark, and your beautiful blue eyes and gentle soul.

(1)、“ignore” in the first paragraph may mean ___________.

(2)、Why did the writer agree to give Mark a free ride ?

(3)、The passage shows what Mark was like through the use of ________.
A、description of his thoughts. B、description of his dialogue. C、description of his looks and actions D、people around him
(4)、Paragraph 5 is mainly about _________.
A、How to help Mike B、Mike's influence on the writer C、Why the author agreed to help Mike D、How the writer felt about Mike's own stories

Long ago, a wolf called Howler lived in a valley where lots of fruit trees grew. He often tried to climb up the trees to eat the fruit, but couldn't reach. In the valley, an old man named Martin also had a few fruit trees that he looked after very well. But as he was getting older, he noticed that he didn't have the strength to pick the fruit.Martin had the most beautiful fruit trees in the valley, which was why Howler had his eye on them. One day he decided to steal the fruit and started jumping up and down the tree.Martin looked out of the window and realized that the wolf was trying to steal fruit from his beautiful trees. Howler jumped and jumped, but he couldn't reach even the lowest branches of such a big tree.

Seeing this, Martin had a great idea: he offered Howler a ladder to climb up, but in return the wolf would have to give him half of the fruit. Howler accepted the deal and began to collect the fruit. For the whole morning, he went up and down the ladder filling his basket with the fruit.

Howler soon realized that he could eat all the fruit if he didn't give Martin some. He thought up a new and secret plan. Martin, on the other hand, trusted Howler and even began to think they would be friends forever.

But the wolf stole the ladder and went off to other trees in the area for more fruit.Realizing that the ladder was missing, Martin went looking for it. Martin felt very disappointed at the trick and no longer trusted Howler. Though he wasn't angry with the wolf and they became friends again, he never made any more deals with him.

At last, Howler learned that he shouldn't trick people and he should keep promises. He also learned that if he had been honest and not greedy, he would still have been able to enjoy more delicious fruit.

Johnnie Martin was born in a worker's family. His parents lived a simple life, saving money for the day when they could send him to a good university. They had dreamed that their son could get a good job and live a better life. However, to Johnnie, school lessons seemed like a wall that was impossible to go through. They were not so easy for him.

One day when he was in Grade 11, Johnnie went to the school psychologist's (心理学家的) office to ask for help. "I've been trying hard, but…" Johnnie was about to cry.

The psychologist put his hand on the boy's shoulder, "People have different kinds of talents, Johnnie. There are painters, who were never able to learn math, and some day you will find what you are good at. When you do, you will make all of us very proud of you."

Johnnie didn't go to university. He found a job in the garden in the town. Soon something amazing happened. People began to notice that Johnnie had what they called a "green thumb". The plants grew well and the roses were in bloom (花). People started to accept his advice for gardening (园艺).

One day while he was walking, he found an unusual dirty land. He volunteered to make it into a garden. That afternoon he started the work, but he couldn't afford all the tools or the plants. People gave him young trees, rose-bushes, benches and many other things. Before long, it had become a beautiful little park.

Today Johnnie is the head of the business in gardening. Wherever he and his men go, they spread beauty before the eyes of people.
