Once, in a small village, lived a family with two children, James and Jack. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} of them loved painting very much, but the family was so {#blank#}2{#/blank#} that it was impossible to send both of them to study at the art college at the same time. After many discussions, the two boys finally worked {#blank#}3{#/blank#} a plan. They would throw a coin. The loser would go to work in the mines（矿井） to support his brother's studies at the college. Then, when the brother at college {#blank#}4{#/blank#} his studies after four years, he would support the other brother's college studies.

    James {#blank#}5{#/blank#}, and so Jack went down into the mines. James worked with all his heart, and his paintings were soon much {#blank#}6{#/blank#} than those of most of his teachers. By the time he graduated, he was beginning to make a lot of money from his paintings.

    When James returned, the family held a big dinner to {#blank#}7{#/blank#} his great success. Soon after {#blank#}8{#/blank#} dinner began, James stood up from his seat to drink a toast to his dear brother. He said, "Jack, now you can go to the art college and your dream will come true. I will take care of you."

{#blank#}9{#/blank#} Jack said softly, "Brother, the four years in the mines has done too much to my hands, so it's too late. Now I can't even hold a glass."

James was heart-broken. One hour {#blank#}10{#/blank#}, he drew a simple picture of his brother's hands. This drawing is today known as the famous picture named The Praying Hands.

    Li Chengze is a 12-year-old boy. He lives{#blank#}1{#/blank#}his parents in a big city. Now everyone calls him a little hero. One night it was very dry{#blank#}2{#/blank#}cold. He went home at about 22:00.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} he got to an entrance of his building, he smelled a smell of pungent (刺鼻的) gas. He quickly ran to the guard room, then he knocked on the door from house to house with the worker. And he told people to open the windows and not to smoke. At{#blank#}4{#/blank#}he found the place where the smell came from. Thanks to the boy, nobody in the building got hurt in the accident.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} clever Li Chengze is!

    There are many different kinds of disasters around the world. As an adult you know what to do during a disaster, but what about the children? Some adults think it would probably never happen to them, so they don't teach their children what to do. Before it's too late, here are ways to help you prepare your children for a disaster.

    Educate: It is always good to let your children know about possible disasters. This doesn't mean children have to live in fear. When teaching them about disasters, keep the conversation positive (积极的) by telling them there is a solution (解决办法) to the disaster. Keep the conversations short, allow for questions and answer them honestly.

    Prepare: Always be prepared. And that is the best piece of advice for children. For example, when preparing for bad weather, get the tools you need, like candles, radios, food, water and medicine. Teach your children what is needed in certain disasters so that they know what is available for them, if ever needed.

    Plan: You should always have a plan for you and your children for any dangerous situation. Write out a simple list that they can read. The plan could start with "listen to an adult's advice and/or call 119".

    Practise: Once you have got the correct safety tools and worked out the right plan, practise every few months. Practising what to do during a disaster with your children will help them if the time comes.

    Disasters can't be avoided but they can belessened once you are prepared and ready for one.

Debbie and Simon looked up when an old lady got into their office. The lady looked at them quickly, and then walked over to Debbie. Debbie greeted(接待) her {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (礼貌地). 

Simon was very sad and took some papers over to the fax machine. Chris, one of the {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(职员), was standing there. " What's up，Simon? You look 5{#blank#}3{#/blank#}（确切地）unhappy. " "Customers in all parts of the world always like Debbie better than me. Ⅰ{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (很少)have them. I can't understand it. "

"I can. Whether or not you can do this well depends on the way you communicate. Communicating is not just about speaking. Body language is important, too. "

"Body language?"

"I mean your gestures(姿势)and the {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (表情)on your face. Your look communicates things as well as your words. " The way you look at people doesn't give them a good impression (印象), Simon. You often rest your head on your hand. You look shy and you aren't {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (积极的). But look at Debbie. She holds her head up. She always smiles and {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(招待)them with warmth and kindness. That's why people {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (欣赏) her and go to her for help, and not you. "After that, Simon tried to smile at people. This seemed to work. Minutes later, a beautiful girl with a nice  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(帽子)got into the office. She looked at Debbie and then Simon. Without thinking twice, she went to Sim on and gave him a big smile. A few moments later, she left, still smiling. 

Chris came over at once and said, " Well done, Simon. I'm so {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (骄傲的)of you. You've already made a good impression on her. "

"That was my sister, " said Simon. " She came to remind me that tomorrow is her birthday. "

I saw an accident on my way to the college. I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(wait) for the bus at the bus stop at that moment. When the bus came, I got {#blank#}2{#/blank#} it and sat by the window. After about five {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(minute), the bus stopped to wait for the green light. I looked outside and saw an old man {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(cross) the road. A boy {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(ride) a motorbike very fast and listening to music. It seemed that he didn't see the signal (信号灯). When the boy noticed the old man, he tried to slow down,{#blank#}6{#/blank#} there was no time. He collided (相撞) with the old man very badly and both of them fell down. They looked even {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (bad) than before when people around found them lying in the pool of blood (血泊). Then a woman stopped and called 120. It came {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(quick) and took them to the hospital. The next day I read the newspaper. The old man died {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the boy was saved in time. I have to say that this was {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(terrible) accident I have ever seen in my life. So we must be careful in our lives.
