If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin,it might be "slow".He didn't learn his ABCs as fast as other kids.He never came first in the schoolyard races.However,his smile was bright and he showed great interest in everything.So when he discovered that Randy was putting together a boy's basketball team,Kevin immediately joined.

At practice,Kevin worked so hard that you'd have thought he was preparing for the NBA.And the whole team truly loved basketball.But just loving the game doesn't help you win.They lost every game that season by a very large margin(差距),except one...that night it snowed and the other team couldn't make it to the game.

At the end of the season,the boys unfortunately played against the first-place team.The game went pretty much as expected,and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin's team stood nearly 30 points behind.At that point,one of Kevin's teammates called time-out."Coach,this is our last game but Kevin has never made a basket.We should let him try," said the boy.With the game completely out of reach,the idea seemed reasonable.So every time Kevin's team had the ball,they would give it to Kevin.His first shot missed and he missed another shot again.This continued a few more times until the player from the other team grew wise.Instead of running off down the court,he threw the ball to Kevin who shot...and missed again.

Soon,all the players were circling Kevin,throwing the ball to him.The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping,chanting,"Kevin!Kevin!" Finally,after amounts of tries,the ball went in.Kevin's arms shot high into the air and he shouted,"I won!I won!" The first-place team remained unbeaten,but on that evening,everyone left the game truly feeling like a winner.

(1)、What helped Kevin's team "win" one game that season?
A、Their improved skills. B、Kevin's hard work. C、The other team's absence. D、The pleasant weather.
(2)、Why did one of Kevin's teammates call time-out?
A、To get their coach's directions. B、To give Kevin a chance to shoot. C、To have a break and gather strength. D、To discuss strategies to win the game.
(3)、What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A、Kevin's team failed due to his bad skills. B、Kevin's teammates were all experienced. C、The first-place team lost the game in the end. D、All the players and audience gave Kevin encouragement.
(4)、Which of the following best describes Kevin?
A、Positive. B、Generous. C、Independent. D、Creative.

It started as a special day for Wesley Autrey, a 50-year-old construction worker in New York City. It was about 12:45 P.M., and he was waiting on a subway platform (月台) to take his daughters home before he went to work. He suddenly noticed a man nearby have convulsions (抽搐) and fall down suddenly. Mr. Autrey and two women went to help the stranger. The man, Cameron Hollopeter, managed to get to his feet, but then stumbled (绊倒) at the edge of the platform and fell onto the subway tracks. Mr. Autrey looked up and saw the lights of the subway train coming near through the tunnel.

Mr. Autrey jumped onto the track immediately. He realized that he didn't have time to get Mr. Hollopeter and himself back up on the platform before the train arrived, so he lay on top of the man and pressed down as hard as he could. Although the driver tried to stop the train before it reached them, he couldn't. Five cars passed over them before the train finally stopped. The cars had passed only inches from his head.

New York loves a hero. Mr. Autrey became an overnight hero and was named the “Subway Superman”. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave him the Bronze Medallion, the city's highest honor. He was asked to appear on several TV talk shows. He was also rewarded with money and gifts, such as $10,000 from Donald Trump, a $5,000 gift card from the Gap clothing store, a new Jeep, and Beyonce concert tickets.

How did Autrey react (反应) to all this? He said, “I don't feel like I did anything great; I just saw someone who needed help. I did what I felt was right”.

When her five daughters were young, Helen An always told them that there was strength in unity (团结). To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.

Helen An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helen and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helen and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helen did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.

Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elizabeth explains, “Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business.”

Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans' corporation makes more than $ 20 million each year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.

A creative mom Danielle Lindemann is a mother to a soon-to-be 3-year-old daughter. When she received the Disney-brand book What Is A Princess? as a gift for her daughter, Lindemann thought the messages seemed a little shallow.

Lindemann's efforts included changing “A princess is kind” to “A princess is kind of a badass” and completing the sentence “A princess likes to dress up”. “I just want my daughter to see that she can be anything she wants,” the mom explained, “She can also speak her own mind and be a doctor or a senator if she wants.”

After Lindemann made the changes, she thought her daughter might be a bit confused, but the daughter actually just rolled with it. Lindemann did not intend for many people to see her edits. She just found it amusing. Though she didn't imagine having such a wide audience, Lindemann says she thinks it's great if her edits make people smile or even think a bit differently about gender models.

Further, Lindemann added, “there is absolutely nothing wrong with girls (or boys!) wanting to put on something sparkly and feel pretty. But when the ruling idea is that girls — and women — are judged mainly on their physical appearance in a way that boys and men are not, I think it's important to model some other values for these girls as well.”

As a parent, she believes it's important to show girls that their worth does not lie only in their physical appearance and that their other qualities are valuable and important. For her, if there were a variety of children's books out there in which little girls were shown playing with trucks and trains and learning to be engineers and surgeons, and if there were books out there in which boys were shown getting a kick out of dressing up in fancy clothes, it would be a different world.

“At present, it's not that world. But time will tell,” she stressed.

On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man.

The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever.

Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper. It said, "Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim(认领)it soon."

After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, "Yes, it's you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here." The young violinist asked calmly, "Are you Mr. George Sang?" The man nodded. The violinist asked, "Did you lose something?" "It's a lottery ticket(彩票)," said the man. The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was seen. "Is it?" he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist.

The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. Later his classmate asked the violinist, "At that time you needed money to pay the tuition (学费)and you had to play the violin in the railway station every day to make money. Why didn't you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?" The violinist said, "Although I don't have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won't be happy forever."

Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us.

One of the most outspoken supporters that I know of women and girls is actually a man. As cofounder of the ONE Campaign, my friend Bono spends a lot of time speaking out against global poverty (贫困). Together, we're working to get out a simple, powerful message: poverty is sexist.

Women and girls are more likely to be in poverty, less likely to get an education and more likely to suffer bad health. And when they are born into poverty, it is much more difficult for them to lift themselves and their families out of it.

Why? One reason is that breaking out of poverty takes timeand that is a resource women around the world are short on. On average, women spend about twice as much time as men in doing the unpaid work that makes life possible for everyone, like cooking, washing, cleaning, shopping and caring. In developing countries, the gap is even much bigger. As a result, women have no time to finish their education, learn new skills, open a business, develop personal relationships or even go to the doctor. They dream of creating a better future for their children, but they can not spare the hours to put those dreams that they have into action.

The fact that the potential of so many women and girls is going unrealized is a sad thingbut it is also an opportunity for us. We need to recognize, reduce and redistribute the burden of work that is holding them back. Because if women have time to invest (投资) in themselves and their ideas, they could transform the world.
