It's said that Li Shou (隶首) invented the abacus. It {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (be) around for over 5, 000 years. Some researchers believe the abacus has a {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (long) history than the other calculators (计算器) in the world. In China, people {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (use) abacuses to do calculations for thousands of years before people use electronic calculators in daily lives. 

The abacus is usually made of wood. It has many beads (珠子). Each bead above the abacus stands for five, and each bead below stands for one. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} moving the beads up or down, one can do all kinds of calculations. 

It is pleasant thing to watch a skilled hand use an abacus. Fingers move, beads knock, and after {#blank#}6{#/blank#} few seconds, the result comes out. In the past, the use of the abacus was a necessary skill. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} it was taught in many schools. 

Today, because we have been used to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (use) electronic calculators, we don't have many chances to see an abacus in our daily lives. Many young people have not even {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (hear) of the word "abacus". However, the abacus still plays an important role in certain situations.

The writing brush is one of the four important objects in the study. It usually has two parts: the head and the shaft(杆).{#blank#}1{#/blank#} And the shaft is made of bamboo, wood, as well as some other materials.

 Almost everyone in Huzhou knows how to make writing brushed. Wang Xiaohua, a60-year-old woman, is a great artisan(工匠) in the Shanlian Huzhou Ink Brush Factory.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} When she was a child, Wang found the women artisan in the factory seemed happy every day. She thought it must be a simple and interesting job. So, after graduating from senior high school, she went to the factory, doing the same job as her mother did.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Making a Hu writing brush needs 8 key processes and more than 120 steps. It usually takes 25 to 30 days to complete one.

 After Wang fully learned the skills of making brushes, she understood the tool better."{#blank#}5{#/blank#} It's not only a writing tools, but also closely connected with the history and culture of China," Wang said.

③ Usually, there are three castes (等级) in ant societies. They are queens, the males and the workers. Queen ants are usually the biggest ants in colonies.  ▲  It lays (产) all the eggs, so the queen becomes the most important ant in the colony. A queen ant can live for longer. The males have larger wings and larger bodies than the worker ants. They can help out with the colony housework, but mostly they do not. They can only live for a few weeks. The queens and the workers are the winners by numbers. The workers do all the "housework"— from building and cleaning the "house" to looking for food. Workers usually live for several months. Workers are also good at building homes. They can build their homes in different places. You may find their homes under rocks or in the trees. How amazing!

④ One ant by itself cannot bring any danger to many other larger animals. However, they can beat much bigger animals in large groups. By working together, these brave(勇敢的) ants can protect their colonies against other animals. 

As we all know, English is an important subject in the middle school. Everyone knows that we must {#blank#}1{#/blank#} English well at school, but some students don't know how to learn it well. Here is some{#blank#}2{#/blank#} that may help you with your English.
